I see Imperial v Imperial matches as either being the red v blue military exercise or my chance to kill that defecting scum.
Fighting against the same faction :-(
As a non asymmetrical game with only 2 factions, you are going to have to expect that. It still happens with X-wing although not as often with the 3rd faction.
Just be grateful you are not always going up against pure mirror lists where your opponent is fielding the exact same list as you.

Like chess or checkers.
That would make the tournaments last for a very very long time, something like 12-15 hours for 3 rounds. Also it would raise the cost of entry for players that want to do tournaments because they know have to buy fleets for both factions (I know a lot of people, myself included, did this, but in my area it is more common that people only invested in multiple of a ship for a chosen faction). Also it is consistent with the lore (sort of) post-Endor. The Empire fragmented, leading to warlords and fiefdoms squabbling with the Imperial Remnant and New Republic, so from that prespective it doesn't really bother me.
IFF there was time you could play twice, once with you list, once with thiers

Why would I want to use someone else's list? Specially if it was a rebel list. No. I want to use my Imperial list, with my ships (that I've lovingly customized) and not someone else's.
I see same faction fighting as they are doing a training exercise/drill or simulation with no live fire. If that doesn't work you can look at it like Chess you are given a game pieces/models and your trying to tactically beat the person on the other side of the table using superior tactics with your game pieces.
Blue on blue is just wrong.. but then I just play for fun and am not at all interested In tournament play. But hey it's your game so yeah.. to each his own.
It has been an interesting discussion and is great to see so much passion from everyone. I have no problem with that so many want to play it just like space tactical game with Star Wars ships. And of course again it is an expensive game making it hard for many to buy into 2 factions.
Let us all find our style of play and enjoy this fantastic game from Fantasy flight games. We all have fun in our own way playing in this star wars universe. I wish all types of players the best of fun and happiness.
I think that fantasy flight games have seen this coming and made this game versatile, so everyone may play somehow. At least they earn a ton of money so they may release many new ships for us to play.
Have fun everyone always. Life is to short not to.

But that's my point! I play to have fun, and having to use rebels would be not fun for me. It would not be enjoyable.
As for blue on blue, it's been mentioned that it happens very frequently in cannon, from rebellious warlords to the actual rebellion using commandeered Imperial craft, so this is how I look at it. It's a huge Galaxy, and such things will happen....

Being that there is such a small number of ships and that it doesn't take too many games to have played against all of them, even in my social games I would go Blue V Blue or Red v Red if for no other reason than the dynamic between the ships changes as does the flow of the game.
I like to think of mirror matches as training exercises. It gives me enough mental fluff to suspend disbelief. At least that's what I rationalized with my 40k armies...
This. Although I don't much care for Faction v Faction myself, I just tell myself they're training maneuvers and leave it at that.

I think if you step back a little from just the fluff the Movies have set, and take a look at what novells and games have given us, then there is a ton of fluffy reasons as to why same faction fights could be a legit thing - and I only know max about 5% of the stories, so there should be tons of valid points still out there.
In the movies, the setting is clean and simple, good vs evil with easily distinguished factions, and I agree the movie rebells should never turn on each other, and movie stormtroopers should never hit anything or anyone important. However, if you take the game and novell fluff then there is much more elaborated fluff, closer to what I would interpret as realistic in regards to humanlike behavior, agendas and the ability to hit things...
It is perfectly plausible for me that there could be internal conflicts in a galaxy-wide rebellion, and that some Moff or Admiral might have developed an own interpretation of how far his powers should go and subsequently needs to be put down the imperial way - lots of guns, lots of dead, force-choke people ![]()
Hello
I have been watching some tournaments in you tube and have to say I really hate to see the same faction fight each other.
Why would this be allowed.
This is Star wars for gods sake , were the rebels fight the empire. Not empire against empire or rebels against rebels.
To really find the best armada player they should play both sides like chess.
A good rule would be that they played 2 matches against each other.
Once as the rebels and once as the empire. The one with the most total points is the winner.
What do you fellow gamers think out there. Am I the only one who hate this....
Fluff
It is Star Wars, yes. And In Star Wars, Imperial ships; especially the Imperial-II Class, Interdictor Class and Acclamator Class (as well as TIE/ln, TIE/gn and TIE/sa) are so common in the Star Wars universe that every criminal gang and their mother owns one. Warlord Zsinj had dozens, as well as his own SUPER Star Destroyer. Prince Xisor and more than one Mand'alor can also stake similar claims.
On the flip side, the Rebel Alliance are thieves. They steal all manner of mothballed ships to re-purpose them for their use. Hell, the Nebulon-B is an Imperial ship! The Legendary T-65 Incom Snubfighter was a craft intended for use by the Empire! We just steal them! ;D
Training simulations are also commonplace in Star Wars; one of my favourite characters, Corran Horn, is in a training simulation at the start of the first book in the X-Wing series(which invloved the Redemption!)
TL;DR: There is no Blue on Blue in Star Wars. It's a myriad of colours and agendas. It's more like Blue-on-Cyan whilst Turquoise waits to capitalise on your mistakes.
Gameplay
Playing mirror matches is insanely good fun. You *think* you know your chosen faction, but you really don't. I've only ever played Rebel, and thought I knew them all inside out. Boy, was I wrong! We're only at Wave 2 at the moment, and there is already a plethora of customisation options available. Commanders and fighters add so much to this game before we even consider upgrades...
Thinking about it makes me giddy for Wave 2. Sad, yes, but I can finally quote Ackbar lines at my opponent :3
Actually the Empire units pretty much fought each other more than the Rebels did in Legends(pre-Disney EU). As the Thrawn trilogy describes, the Imperial fleet had 25,000 Star Destroyers at the height of its power, 5 years after Endor (When the Thrawn trilogy takes place)that number had been reduced to a mere 200. In the time frame post Endor the Rebels focused mainly on taking Coruscant and fighting Warlord Zsinj. In fact most of the 13 Grand Admirals of the Empire died to in-fighting rather than to the Rebels.
So movie wise it might not make as much sense in the larger scope it makes perfect sense.
As for the Rebel side, the Early Rebel fleet composed of ships that had been modified like pirate vessels so sometimes they fought similar ships belonging to a pirate faction. Just something to keep in mind if faction versus faction is bothering you that much.
