Editable Galaxy Maps?

By KAGE13, in Star Wars: Armada

Does anyone know of any Editable galaxy maps or software that creates these maps.

I have some ideas for a campaign but I need to be able to make maps.

I've done some searching but haven't found much.

I did find something Called Galaxy forge. I can make some very nice galaxies but I can't really edit anything, like put Imperial symbols above planets or anything.

I think you can just go on a website like this one http://www.edibletastyprints.com/HTML/photo/photoprints.htm

and order a print. Looks like the largest they have is only 8.5"x11" though so I guess you'd have to order a bunch and then just put them together. That's going to be a huge cake too. Can't wait to see the result!

The Star Wars Atlas may be a good start as any.

Its not editable but it may do what you want.

It depends if you want full galaxies, sectors, sub-sectors, or system scales. I know that Profantasy has Cosmographer 3, but I've never been a fan of buying something when I could do it myself. Depending on how variable you want things, GIMP or Photoshop is still one of the best options around if you have the time. Otherwise... actually, Photoshop still might be with a few fill tools and boundary brushes (it makes the dotted lines), then just import symbols and bang, done. If you're using the Star Wars galaxy, you can just import a high resolution image and draw on top of it.

Sorry if it sounds obvious. Galaxy Forge is from Sins of a Solar Empire's map editing software, isn't it? I'd have to take a look as its output files.

Just want to say every time I see the title to this thread I think it says "edible" galactic maps...

Makes me laugh

Galaxy forge is free and for sins of a solar empire.

I would recommend buying sins of a solar empire: rebellion the next time it is on sale on steam.

Then get the enhanced 4x mod.

But yeah, galaxy forge... I have made some kickass maps with that simple tool.

I made hex-based Star Wars map in Photoshop. Can make the PSD available to you if its any use? (Its layered so you can change names etc. as required).

Yep me too! I was picturing moons made of cheese....

I've played around with maps a lot (see here ), using (mostly) GIMP as my image editor (it's free, but there's a learning curve).

I guess a question is for you to more precisely let us know what you're trying to do. In what format do you intend to use these maps, and what scale of detail are you looking for?

ya I wouldn't mind having a look at it.

I.... third Gimp as a program. I did some pretty basic image editing classes in college, but still had no idea what the heck was going on with it when I first booted the program - even so with an hour or so of playing around I got to where I could make an editable (or edible if you print it) map for that kind of thing.

The hard part would be finding the base image of the starwars glaxy.... Fantasy Flight has a really nice one in each of their RPG books, but for some reason has refused to put it online.

I read the topic as "EDIBLE Playmats" !

No problem. Download it from here:

There are additional hexes you can show if you want a larger map. Text & icons can be hidden/changed as required. The region locations in this map are pretty accurate (I spent hours looking at Star Wars maps to make sure each hex had a fairly well known name that was relatively accurate in its location).

Its for an Armada & X-Wing campaign I'm running at my local club. Once I know it works, I'll be posting it in the forums ;)

How about edible 3D obstacles as an option?

Any suggestions on appropriate snacks and rules?

It could be the one advantage of vinyl playmats! Easy to wipe off :)

Still trying to figure why you would want edible star maps.

I guess it's an incentive for the winner. "After you are defeated by my Star Destroyers you will be forced to eat your own star map! Bwa Ha Ha Ha!"

I'm looking to make a campaign. So I need a campaign map. One I can edit with which side controls which system and with some other stuff I have ideas for.

I"m not looking for a matt to play on.

But will this be a printed map that you bring to your gaming group or (and?) will it be one that you display online? That (the 'and' option) is what I'm looking to do, though I am only going to be using a region of space for the campaign I'll be running.

It would be one that I display online. That is why I want it editable, so I can show the changing dynamics of the campaign.

My advice would then be to use a free image editor like GIMP. There's a little learning curve to it (using layers), but once you have the hang of it, it'll allow you to do what you're looking for. This would be the map base that I would use, if you wanted to have a galaxy-wide campaign, but maybe you're opting for something less complex.

Less complex and more abstract might be something like what DagobahDave has done for X-Wing. You can see his thread on that here , or go to his webpage . The images he has are filled out, in the way that you would want to do, but maybe his imagery could be a basis for you. Also, if you wanted to contract him, I'm sure he could put something particularly awesome together for you.

Anyone else read this as "Edible Galaxy Maps"?

I don't think edible maps will work I like to use mine more than once.

Not too many ovens large enough to bake a 6x4 surface. Guess it'd have to be like a fruit rollup.

You might find a place willing to do it as a Pizza base in their roller oven?

Another source is a project being done by someone at the Rancor Pit (a forum for the D6 RPG by West End Games), who is working on a vector graphic map.

You can find the discussion thread for that here: New Galaxy Map
