Ultramarines Movie - real deal

By Lucius Valerius, in Dark Heresy

We have to recognise that the Ultramarines are kind of the "poster children" for the 40k universe. If this film does well based on the awesomeness of the setting (and believe you me, it is awesome), then you know film makers will be getting rights to make further films using other chapters, guard, the inquisition, ect ect. Its important to have a good foundation for these things and not sit around complaining that the ultramarines are bland. They are only bland to us because we all know so much about the universe.

No, they are bland and it doesn't matter how much of the setting you know. The setting is anything but bland, and that's the only thing holding them up, the setting. They're bland, the setting isn't.

Of course, I'm not too fond of most any chapter in the staring role of anything. I prefer a more everyman's POV wen it comes to the 40k universe, something to put things in perspective and add emphasis on the massive scale of it all, not something that is just as overblown as everything else. There's just no decent contrast in that. Then again, I'm also bored by most all action movies so take my opinion how you will.

I like the idea of a guard film. But, I would like to see a film series based on the Horus Heresy. That would be interesting. Having the climatic duel between the Emperor and Horus. I mean, with that, there would already be a set of characters waiting to be filled. And in the end, we can have that whole, sappy, slow motion ending, where it looks grim for the emperor as he is carried away, barely clinging onto life. His brothers crying (in slow-mo). Being brought into a medical facility (in slow-mo). And eventually, being carried up to the top of his Golden Throne (in slow-mo), and then hooked up to his throne (in slow-mo). Similar to the ending of Revenge of the Sith.

Cyclocious, that just made me spray coffee all over my computer screen, nice one! partido_risa.gif

I'm surprised more people aren't saying the obvious thing here: this film is almost certainly going to be less fun than staring at the sun through binoculars. CGI smurfs pounding around endlessly shooting things in slow motion while shouting heroic laconic cliches at each other is such a stupid idea.

I hate the whole concept so much it gives me strength.

For a film to be any good there have to be characters one can relate to or empathise with. SMs are great as playable videogame characters, background to more involved stories or armies. But they're essentially dull ciphers. They will make terrible central characters for any kind of drama.

I suspect this thing is going to be totally unwatchable to anyone but children. And most of them will probably find it silly.

I think you're forgetting that Ultramarines don't just fight Tyranids. They also FILE PAPERWORK because they're the Roman Government IN SPACE!

Ultrasmurfs get nothing shiny or special except their planetary systems eaten by 'Nids on a regular basis.

Think of all the cool characters that GW could have thrown down for this film:
Huron Blackheart and his betrayal
Adaptation of the Horus Heresy
And many other such things that I can't remember right now!

A film involving 10 minutes of Olanius Pius' life would be more interesting than >9,000 minutes of anything to do with Ultrasmurfs.

Welcome :)

It's nice to feel loved :D

As I said, I think the best thing they could do is take some of Abnetts work to the big screen.

Agree 100%. I think it would do really well.

I'm currently re-reading the omnibus. Aemos' sacrifice nearly made me cry...

A Ravenor movie could be interesting as well, or one of the Ciaphas Cain novels.

But no, they go with the Space Governer chapter ¬_¬

I went one better, I shed a tear or a few at Aemos' demise, and Maxilla :( I liked them, Fisching? Bah!

Fischig was a liar and a fool, he got what he deserved.

Maxilla was so-so.

Bequin however was shed-a-tear worthy. I need to buy the second Ravenor book so I can find out if anything ever happens with her.

Just go ahead and buy the Ravenor Omnibus - you get all three books and the two short stories, Thorn Wishes Talon and Playing Patience, which are both stellar reads.

Also, it might interest you to know that Abnett is working on a new trilogy, which he has affectionately named "The Bequin Trilogy," but is being referred to as Ravenor versus Eisenhorn. Don't know many details yet, but I am looking forward to more of my two favorite Inquisitors.

I really want to like this, given that it could be the first in many potentially glorious 40k films, but... it's the Ultramarines. All I can think of is

"Brother Sergeant, BAD GUYS!"

">:-(."

"For the Emperor!"

*Sounds of bolters and chainswords*

for 90 minutes. Space Marines are interesting if they are part of a story but the fact is they are the Imperium's elite shock troops. They kill stuff all day. A Space Marine can't investigate, can't fall in love or have much in the way of interpersonal relationships, can't have much of a personality unless shown in contrast to normal humans. I think Xenos does this quite well. Some Space Marines come in when it's important and are interesting to see but they don't hog the screentime.

I think that a good 40k film would try to include many aspects of the world its in, and that means that the Inquisition or roaming IG members make good choices as the leads. I would love to see something along the lines of a Last Chancers, Ciaphas Cain, or Eisenhorn movie. There's just not a lot of depth that Space Marines can have.

I already have the first and the third novels (Impulsive buying), but I want to read all the novels at once. Query: Is Thorn Wishes Talon the short story involving the mirror cult and meeting up with Eisenhorn? Because if so, I have that somewhere.

Bequin Trilogy? Ravenor vs Eisenhorn? I...I think I just...*Ecstasy*

Tee bee haych, it'll only be 70 minutes ;]

Once again i have to play the optimist on a space marines mind, honestly i never hear about the brotherhood these people share. they are trained from birth or a little later to work together and solely to fight the emperors enemys. Did HORUS not have personality? do chapter masters not have personality? every space marine has a personality its just darker and more fighty than most or brutal if you are a space wolf and honestly id love to see some space marines fighting it out and anguishing over a loss of their brother i mean think of the funeral procession scene they do a lot for them when they die they have to they are one in a few.

as for Eisenhorn and Ravenor movies OMGE (Oh My God Emperor) YES YES and oh wait did i say YES!!! and i cant wait for the bequin trilogy i want to see the chair go up against the crazy robot with the daemonhost and the girl in the backround wanting him to stop.

Yea. It was previously published in a short story collection called What Price Victory. That's probably where you've got it.

Sorry for the epic thread derailment, but I am reminded of this for some strange reason;
