So do you think the game has evolved to the point where:
Rocks can be placed anywhere 1 from the edge.
Each player brings 4 rocks instead of 3

Debris or not debris, that is the question.
I wonder how a rule change like that would effect large base turrets. It would make it harder to just zoom around the outside of the board.

I've felt this way for while. Though I would more than likely make it more obstacles each no closer than range 2 from each deployment edge. I wouldn't be averse to going up to 6 each to be honest. I would avoid the range 1 increment because then it is possible for one player to place them on his baseline and easily remove them from the game after the first turn, or to use them to crowd the opponents deployment zone by just sticking down obstacles along the line.
Part of the reason large base ships with turrets do so well is the ability to just zoom around the edge of the board shooting inwards. If they had to account for obstacles on two of those edges you make them fly around them, rather than through the clear space.

There's a store event coming up near me where after a ship has been destroyed a debris field is placed in that spot for one game round, then removed. I rather liked that idea. Being quite new to the game I'm not sure if this is a common format, but it seemed to me to add an interesting dimension...

Sometimes we even fly squints through them if the temptation is high... 50/50 chance... hahaha
But as I said, all good points and for most groups sound advice.
Edited by onewayI think after regionals in Milwaukee this weekend I'll see if people wanna try this out.. it sounds fun, and more obsticles could be more fun especially with a larger area to place them...
We do it all the time..... where you place as many asteroids on the field as you can. its a great way to learn how to fly.
If you are going to do it put a ban on dash. he kind of kills the fun
Range 1 I think gives you enough deployment space so I don't think a decrease from Range 2 from the edges to 1 from the edges would make that much of a difference. However I can see some concern for the decision to place obstacles 2 away from the edges. Try to place all the obstacles on one side ensuring that they are range 1 from both the edges and each other and see how that effects deployments.
To be honest I don't think turrets will suffer that much but swarms on the other hand since they take up more area than a large base ship in order to maneuver effectively will struggle with that change.
As for me, I'm just glad we have a choice in what obstacles are in the way instead of flying around an asteroid field every match.

We've done this as an optional / occasional house rule for a while now. Its really brutal but great fun.
A change i'd like to see but its so major it would never happen would be random movement of astroids during the game.
In the films they are rolling about all over the place whereas the games are essentially icebergs chained to the sea bed on our 'flat' sea of space.

I actually wrote and posted a scenario here with moving asteroids ....

Edited by shotbyscottIntroduce asteroids with numbers on. Those numbers are the number of dice you roll when you fly through or land on them. Thus big ones can do more damage than small ones. ![]()
