Which varnish to use?

By Kapten Vendetta, in X-Wing

Hello, Ama hankerin' for some varnishin' on one of my ships, but I fear that if I use my regular varnish (Army P. Matt Varnish) it will stick out like a sore thumb on the gaming mat, since the varnish (I've compared other varnished models to the ships) is a lot more shiny than the standard coat of the minis.

So my question is: which varnish do you use when you customize your ships, and how big of a difference is there?

I suppose I could varnish it all, but it seems a bit excessive when I'm only gonna' repaint a single ship to start.

It's a working theory that N'dru will stop being difficult when I fly him once he gets his own ship...

If you want a really matte finish go for Testor's dullcoat.

Any Gloss varnish for protection followed by Testor's Dullcoat for a dead flat matt finish.

The Dullcoat is really the best at giving you a matt finish, but it doesn't give much protection, so for anything you game with I'd hit it with a Gloss first, I personally use whatever GW sells as it's the easiest to come by in these parts.

And after the dullcoat pick out the canopy in a brush on Gloss for that extra shiny look, to give it that little bit of extra

How important is varnish overall?

How important is varnish overall?

Important? Probably not. Paint can always be touched up.

Nice? Absolutely. These models get handled a LOT.
