Ally and Villain Packs - ranking?

By Marten, in Imperial Assault Campaign

I want advice.

Bought the core game but not interested in getting too much directly.

Out of the Ally and Villain Packs which ones would you rank top 3 and why?

I guess for Campaign play it's better to spend the money on the coming expansion?

Royal Guard Champion has some pretty neat agenda cards and he only appears in like 2 or 3 missions I believe, so you'll get good bang from your buck on winning his side mission.

IG-88 only appears in 1 or 2 missions, so you get even more from winning his side mission. But his agenda cards aren't as strong, unless you go heavy on droids.

I don't have General Weiss, but I heard his agenda cards aren't that good. Plus he's in many of the story missions at the moment AND is massive so you can't even use him in all missions.

I will second the fact that the Royal Guard Champion is a great pack. The actual figure shows up in the Campaign a decent amount, and the Skirmish missions that come in that pack are my absolute favorite so far. (I have all the packs.)

In general, if you're more of a Campaign player, the villain packs will give you a little more bang for your buck, since Villain packs contain everything the Ally packs have, but they also contain Agenda cards that the Imperial player can use.

Other then that, I would have to recommend the Rebel Trooper and Rebel Saboteur packs, as they contain two deployment cards that don't come with the base game: Elite Saboteurs and Elite Rebel Troopers. (The Rebel Troopers and Sabs Skirmish missions are really really fun as well)

If I had to rank them in terms of value:
1. Rebel Sabs/Troopers (Great skirmish missions and totally new elite deployment cards that don't come with the base game.)
2. Royal Guard Champion (Very fun skirmish missions, great agenda deck, figure shows up in the campaign alot.
3. Any villain packs. (You get Agenda cards in addition to the stuff you get in an ally pack.)
4. Any ally packs.

Just a warning though... if you buy one, you'll probably end up buying them all. It's really fun having all the figures.

+1 To Stokes52.

But, going back to the OP, if budget was limited, I'd be tempted to hold out for Twin Shadows. Probably best bang for buck. You'll get heaps of new content compared to the ally/villain packs. Completely new units, a new imperial class, new map pieces, new missions.

The wave 1 ally/villain packs add much less - the main benefit are the plastic minis, but you can get by with the tokens alone. The expansion adds new minis and completely new units.

Thanks for all the answers.

I have played one campaign so far, on the hero side.

Think I will actually skip the Ally/Villain packs for now and wait for the expansion and play the campaign with a friend.

I got five of them (Chewbacca and IG88s were out stock).

A little part of me regretting getting General Weiss, his is pretty crappy and as you say the Agenda isn't that great.

On the other hand, I'm a completionist :) .

I guess for Campaign play it's better to spend the money on the coming expansion?

Yes. Get one additional dice set (helps out so much if you have 5 players) and save up for Twin Shadows!

The models from the ally/villain packs are nice. But you really don't need them.

The new missions I can't talk about. We started our 2nd campaign before the expansions where here and thus played without them.

Will have some more to say about this when we are a bit in our 3rd campaign.

I recommend the Royal Guard Champion pack because both the Agendas are good, the Infestation Mission is solid, and the miniature is nice. You can feasibly use the Villain regularly since he doesnt show up that much, he offers a GREAT counterpiece to a tooled-up Diala or Gaarkhan, and adds a sizeable headache to close-quarters fights by his interrupt, without unbalancing the game (Hello, Vader!)
