New article about the Kihraxz — Lightning Reflexes

By Danthrax, in X-Wing

You know what's weird? I don't actually like the K's dial any better than the X-wing. The 1-turns are a reasonable trade for the 1-straight, but also losing the 3-turns is pretty tough, especially on a fighter that's supposed to be able to fly spread out a bit. Lacking both the 1 and 5 straight is also not nice. A single small-base ship could feasibly block all straight moves from a single position. Two K-turns are pretty sweet, but a shorter one would have been nicer. 4 and 5 are not so different that you usually can get a lot out of both.

The three-turns is a huge hurt. Big obstacles are going to be a pain for this ship.

However, there are a lot of times in this game when going slower or tighter is better than going fast or wider. Not having the option between both hurts both of these ships.

the 3 and 4 k are the least valuable, I believe (unless your 4 k is white, of course). 5 and 2 are amazing. It would have been nice to see 5 and 3 instead of 5 and 4 but it's not a bad thing, really. I think you'll usually take the 5 if you're k-turning, though.

Another error in the article, seeing as we're spotting them. This one's a very easy one to make, and we've all probably done it at least once.

For starters, both the Kihraxz and the X-wing boast similar squad point costs, primary weapons with attack values of "3," agility values of "2," and the ability to withstand five hits, divided between shield and hull values. However, those shield and hull values aren't assigned in the same way; whereas the X-wing features two shields and three hull, the Kihraxz features four hull and just one shield, making it slightly more vulnerable to critical hits.

Anyone see it?

I guess you mean the "ability to withstand five hits", it's only four.

Under simultaneous attack rules it could be 5... temporarily.

Bingo.

Exciting little ship but at least one "error" continues.

NO EPT ON NAMED PILOT who really needs it, yet EPT ON GENERIC who might not even see play.

The midrange named really really need an EPT to stand out unless their ability is insane. Azzamen has the same problem, Laetin too. Neither see play right now and an EPT would instantly change that for at least Emon and maybe Laetin. Graz has potential but would be an instant favorite with an EPT.

It's funny that you pick on them specifically, because I won an escalation tournament with Emon loaded with 2 seismic and a prox, and Laetin with Stealth, title, and HLC.

I think the trick with using them is that they pull their own weight without being so dangerous as to command immediate attention. My whole list was like that, though: no obvious first target.

That being said, I think either of those ships stand on their own. Laetin has an ability which either works well and frustrates the opponent to death, or which doesn't come into play because they get one-shoted.

Emon is great, imo. I mean, I'd like to boost him to ps8, but he doesn't need it. I like loading him with bombs and dead man's switch.

Either way, I'd encourage you to experiment with then both some more, they're fun.

I've had the most luck with Laetin of the two (probably just as much as early Krassis) but I really really want an EPT to shore up defense, make positioning easier, or ensure that my glass cannon hurts before it shatters.

That's the issue though, they are all "almost". And as more and more EPTs come out they fall farther and farther behind similar options that do have EPTs. Laetin/Emon would both love a discard-able 180 to ensure better positioning to better utilize the weapons they paid a premium for... It doesn't have to be Predator or PTL but it could be...could be. Instead it's imperial aces all over again.

Bingo.

Since when did hits become synonymous with damage cards?

One hit to strip the shield, then max of 4 more to lay 4 cards on it. Of course al you need is one hit and two crits that show Direct Hit.

Right, but you die on the last hit, so it's hardly 'withstand', is it?

Usually. Fel's Wrath says hello. And goodbye

Yeah I gotta agree with others on the whole no ept for the mid range uniques. It's definitely hard to use them especially of they are on a squishy ship like the scyk and even this ship to an extent.

Also idk why but I love Talonbane Cobra's name. It's like the Xbox gamer tag of x wing names lol.

It's like an 80s-90s cartoon villain name.

So bad it's good.

You just know that he came up with that name himself...

"Yeah, you can call me Talonbane Cobra, just a little nick name I picked up back home."

"It says here that your name is Gary..."

Gary was here!

Wedge is a loser!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who found the talonbane cobra name, questionable. It is far from so bad it is good, just bad. Probably because I've seen too many of these names on xbox to find them funny anymore. I will simply call him, Derp Head.

Gary Stu, perhaps

That sounds even more like an online user alias to me.

As long as it sounds less like a wrestler, that is fine.

Just wait for his cousin, Fangsmile Smashscythe for the Scum Aces pack.

I'm still holding out hopes that the Punisher middle pilot's name is "Deathfire McDibbs."

Redline, Deathfire McDibbs, and Minxxx Jr.

And his nemesis Dread Mongoose.

I still favour the headcanon that "Talonbane Cobra" is a Dread Pirate Roberts deal - it's the top ace in the Black Sun, as opposed to any specific pilot.

They tried to give him a name that was awesome and scary, to instill fear into the hearts of others while they were there.

Note I specified 'tried'. Perhaps it merely translates poorly to English? ;)

I'm torn on Talonbane Cobra. I think he has a great pilot ability, but is coming out in the wrong era of the game. Secondary weapons are extremely common in the game today, and his pilot ability will have no effect on those enemies at range 3.

He'll still be good against those without cannons, missiles or torpedoes equipped, which is still a fair number of ships. But things like IG88 and Outriders will eat him for lunch.

Think of it as an anti-swarm defence for his real power, that being a 5-die range 1 shot.

I want to love that PS6 fellow... but he can't take Lone Wolf. He could've been a jousty Luke. :(

Damnit, now all I can think of is this hypothetical cartoon.

"Curse you Wedge Antilles. You'll rue the day you crossed… TALONBANE COBRAAA!"

Imagine it, a young Wedge Antilles joins the Rebellion Ace Squadron (or some equally 80s "we're awesome and really cool" squad name) with Wes Janson as the grizzled older team leader, or maybe Biggs Darklighter as the cool older pilot. Jek Porkins as the bumbling fat guy with a heart of gold and slapstick comedy timing.

Occasionally they battle Mauler Mithel and the ominous sounding black squadron (because they are technically fighting the Empire), but mostly they cross paths with "The nefarious TALONBANE COBRA and his EVIL VIPER squadron!!!".

In every bloody episode the mysterious pilot V shows up and helps the squadron out in some way with the question always being asked "Who is pilot V?" often around the same time that someone mentions Wedges older brother Valiant Antilles (made up for the cartoon) who died when the ship he was on was ambushed by space pirates.

I can taste the theme music already.

I also hate that I've spent too much time actually thinking about this.
