Painting TIE's and muddy models?

By Vayral, in Star Wars: Armada

Hi everyone,

Been looking at everyone else's work here and it's all so awesome - hoping some of you could give me some advice on where I'm going wrong!

I've had a few attempts at painting my TIE models now, and each time I'm left feeling unsatisfied with the results. I'll run you through my process;

1: Prime models with a Army Painter black spray

2: Airbrush some GW Administratum Grey. (I like the models at this point, they look really smart and crisp)

3: Brush on some GW Nuln Oil wash - It's at this point I regret doing it because I think the model looks dirty

4: paint the vent and weapons on the front (blue/green)

The result is below;

I'm not sure where to go to tidy this up at this point, do I just give the edges of the solar arrays a lick of the GW grey to tidy it up? Or is there some other artistic wizardry I'm unaware of that could help.

If anyone could recommend anything to protect the paint after as well that would be great, I don't want it chipping off after all this work!

Thanks for your help guys.

To begin with I would paint the solar panels black and perhaps only use the oil wash on the cockpit and beams, not the panels.

Hope this helps.

They Grey is an awesome colour, and is wonderfully shaded...

But as njbulters said - it just lacks a bit of contrast. They're just total sheet grey (although that grey is fantastically executed).

Try them with Black Panels on the Outside, and see how it goes...

I would take to the mold lines with a piece of fine sandpaper/file in the inner solar panels.. A bit of clean up work makes them look so much better.

Awesome, thanks. You're correct, they are very, very grey! I'll let you know how it goes.

thanks!

Well you guys are great, big difference straight away with the black panels and the more controlled use of the wash!

Thanks again :)

Much improvement, they look worthy of any imperial fleet now
