Tournament report...

By Darth Lupine, in Star Wars: Armada

Just took part in the first local Armada tourney. Standard 300 points, we had six players, 4 Imperial and 2 Rebels.

I ran:

VSD I with Screed and flight controllers

GSDI with Demolisher, engine techs and ACM

GSD I with ACM

Mauler Mithel and 4 TIEs

296 points

My missions did not come into play as I always went first, but they were minefields, advanced gunnery and hyperspace assault.

First game against an Imp player flying 2 GSD II upgraded to the gills and a full 100 points of fighters. My fighters held his off long enough for me to do one pass...poof, 2 dead GSDs. 10-0

Second game, Imp player with one VSD II and a Demolisher GSD, Rhymer flying circus.....he set up his GSD off to the side thinking to split my force...I set up everything and went directly for his VSD. I only lost three TIEs to his screen before I finished off both of his ships. 10-0

Third game, rebels!! A fully upgraded assault frigate and a Neb B with plenty of Xwing and Ywing support. Again my fighters just held off his fighters for a couple of rounds while I finished off the AF with both my GSD's and long range fire from my VSD, and then the Demolisher swooped down from long range to right next to his Neb B for the coup de grace..I rolled 8 hits on those black dice. I did lose all my TIEs ...but still, 10-0.

So, I win the first ever local tourney!! Looking forward to the next one.

Perfect score, nice one.

I can certainly see the highly upgraded two ship empire builds struggling against you.....you have more attack dice, more hull, more commands, and the activation advantage, and they have to come into the same range. Im surprised the rebels did so badly, notionally they could run sideways before sending in the fighters. Were they not running things like yavaris to really power up the fighters?

Nope, just a hugely upgraded Gallant Heaven and the Neb B had the other title on it.

The reb player came straight at me at full speed...not the smartest thing IMO. I just ran both Glads around him, and the VSD right at him. No contest.

haha, you don't say :P

the only rebel thing that should be racing straight for imperial capital ships are squadrons

They did, and got tangled up with my meager TIE screen...just as planned. The reb player said something about flying past me and outrunning me, and I was like, you were trying to outrun an engine techs equipped Demolisher with a Neb and a whale?!.....hmm.....

it is possible to do so by going past the demolisher, since even it and the cr-90 can't just pull a 180 like in X-wing. they can be overshot and take a while to come back into the fight

running into the entire fleet, though, is not worth the risk :P

Actually I almost did pull a 180 with it, by burning a nav dial and engine techs, and then ran down the Neb, which had run into a corner. My other GSD was taking a bit to turn, and the VSD was definitely out of range...but rolling eight hits with four black dice plus ACM on the side.....yeah. And his shields were all already gone from his pass past my VSD.

Our first catch of the day.

I have been teaching new players (6 so far) and playing the occasional game when I can find another player. It amazes me that most people just don't know how to run the rebels. Rebels are generally Snipers, Imps are generally knife fighters. Yet, in darn near every game the Rebel players seem to just charge into close range and get creamed. I have seen rebels run correctly, as snipers, keeping the range with masterful maneuvering once. They are fully capable of winning a stand up fight with GSDs and VSDs when run properly. Wise selection of objectives and using your maneuvering advantages are the key to playing rebels well.
