What is the max amount of ships for wave 1?

By Cubanboy, in Star Wars: Armada

I come to this point in buying wave 1 ships where I want to ask the question, how many do I need to for both sides. (I oh most feel a bit weird asking because I dont want to sound like I am bragging in the ability to buy a lot of ships, its the reason I dont list what I own in the auto signature) Also to keep in mind I have a wife and couple friends that like to play this game with me but are not in a position to buy ships.

So with that I currently own 3 CR-90, 3 Frigates, 2 GSD, 2 VSD, 2 AFM and 3 of each squad. Do I need to pick up anything else? I guess as a recovering 40k player I really like the idea of fielding the max of unit type on the battlefield as running that can be effective based on the ship. (example 3 CR-90s easily can create a 300 point list equally so 2 VSD) Also Is running say 7 b-wings or 8 intercepts is crazy in 300 points so should I own 4 of each squads?

Maybe I am over thinking it but would love some feed back.

Unless you want to corvette swarm your good

I also like have 3 VSD and 3 AF. Just for whenever the mood strikes to put a sumo wrestler list out there.

I have 2 VSD, 2 Glads, and 2 Imp Squadron pack that should do me for the IMPs. When I finish the Rebs I'll have 3 corvettes, 3 Nebula's, 2 AFM II, and 2 Squadron packs.

That will be good for me, and it is leaning towards the 400 points when Wave 2 breaks.

I say 2 Space whales, 2 Gladiators, 2 VSD's if you want the flight controllers, 2 CR90's for the upgrades and the fun times, 2 Nebulon-B's for the upgrades and the better times and 3 to 5 of each fighter pack (5 is good because 400 points means 133 in fighters. That's 10 X-Wing fighters or 12 interceptors (but you would rather have Fel and Howlrunner and 8 interceptors)

When you already have that amount of budget for Armada, the question is rather "How many ships do I need to keep me happy?"

I personally think you have enough of a particular ship if you can already use all its titles in one fleet. It might be better to save the money for Wave 2 instead. From the looks of it, Wave 2 is the real money sink.

100 on 2 ISD's, 120 for 3 MC80's, 60 for 3 Raiders, 120 for 4 MC30's (I will be getting 6 eventually), and 60 for 3 rogue and villan packs

Thanks for all the thoughts. I think that I am going to grab 1 more squad of each and start saving for wave 2.

Am I the only one who wants to simulate a vast space battle, no time limits and anything goes, huge points on either side? Thought not! So I'm going to suggest 2 imperial 'squadrons' each composed of:

1 Imperial class Star Destroyer (SD)

2 Victory class SD

2 Gladiators class SD

2 Raider class

Fighter squadrons are based around 'theoretical' quantities per individual capital ship. So for example, each Imperial Star Destroyer having 6 squadrons attached, each Victory having 2 etc.

The two Rebel 'Squadrons' are slightly trickier to configure, simply because they should be much more randomly composed in nature in order to maintain the source material's vibe. Right now I'm looking at something like:

1 Home One

2 Assault Frigates,

2 MC30C

2 CR90

2 Nebulon B

That gives the Rebel fleet a good mix of different ship types. If I wanted to go full Space battle for Endor, then I'd possible drop one of the Space Potatoes and add another two CR90.

As the Rebel fighter squadrons are all jump capable, there are less theoretical limits on their numbers...in my universe at any rate!

For both sides (2 capital ship Squadrons per side), cards would tune out the inevitable points disparity, but for a match of this scale, I'd keep upgrades to a bare minimum and use bare-bones basic hull designs wherever possible.

Obviously this is a horrendously expensive suggestion, and offers a gameplay experience more suited to either solo play (running the match over several days) or 4 players for several hours. It would be a truly stunning experience to be involved in however!

Personally with two of every expansion I'd be extremely happy with what I could field. It would offer tons of flexibility without feeling like I've spent too much money on anything. This lets you have room to be creative while enjoying lists that can have specific themes. Aside from CR-90 swarms or 3+ Gladiator lists or having especially specific fighter needs I think you're going to be just fine.

if you want to be silly, you could pull a four GSD list

at 400, you'll actually have squadrons!

I have 3 of every ship except for CR90s & Neb-Bs, I have 4 each of those. I keep thinking about getting a fifth CR90 incase I want to try a corvette swarm.

I was tempted to get another whale to make it a pair but then I thought that the MC80 could fill what ever role I could think of for a second whale. I only have 3 VSDs since i bought 2 cores.

Here is what I mean. A large ship has a monstrous base that is over 5" long and we'll over range 1 in width. That means you can overlap things so much easier.

Now, try this next part out with your maneuver tool, a small ship base and a medium ship base.

With a small ship at speed 3 (let's use the Nebulon-B to keep on the same page) the usual movement is none, 1, and 2. So take your tool and place it on the left side of the small ship, now click the tool at speed 2, 1 click to the right.

Now try to place the small base at the speed 3 notches (with the 2 and 3 sections going right). A small ship will fit there, a medium won't. A large can't either.

This is just a single item though you have a larger ship so your arcs will be hit more often, a Space Whale's Paragon will hit far more often than it does now, and you will be far easier to flank.

Large ships are intimidating but they will suffer in movement where they excel in attacking (as it should be really)

Worth mentioning, I bought 5 of each Wave 1 Fighter pack. It gives the option to field lots of 1 type. Keep in mind, if you are painting your sqaudrons you are dramatically increasing your work load. I'm still painting my Wave 1 squads....

In the Rebel Battle Group, I have -

- x1 RAF

- x2 NebB

- x2 CR90

- x2 fighter pack

In the Imperial Task Force, I have -

- x2 VSD

- x2 GSD

- x2 fighter pack

If space permits, I'd add another Imp fighter pack and also another GSD.

As to how many ships I buy, it follows these simple rules -

1) Small ships must never operate alone. 2 is the minimum. 3 is best.

2) Medium ships can operate alone but a partner may do it good.

3) Large ships can operate by themselves while being attended by several escorts.

Now I am not dogging you or anything but I will say that I find this interesting. Large ships will be hard pressed to fill the roles of a medium or smaller ship.

well, beyond just the movement (of which the unknown nav chart will be a factor), will be many distinguishing factors

1 - No evade token, one more redirect and one contain

2 - beefier, more impressive side arc by magnitude of 2 blue dice

3 - obviously more expensive (+ coupled with quoted changes in navigation) for the same squadron, command, engineering (though superior anti-squadron to the B variant, and superior squadron to the A variant)

4 - unique titles will completely alter battlefield applications

Great points ficklegreendice but that all gets mitigated by movement.

I am thinking that all large ships will be speed 3. Anything less and they will barely be moving.

I have two VSD, three GSD and two imperial fighter packs. Only Rebs is what came in the starter...don't need nothing else till wave two, and then one, perhaps two ISD, at least three Raiders, and maybe the rogues pack.
