Determination question

By Larel, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I am a bit confused about the upgrade determination. It says on the card to immediately discard any crits that have the pilot trait, now does that mean you do not take the hit also because it says nothing about flipping the card down.

I felt this is way to powerful for 1 pt , and if that is how it works why the hec is it not on every fat han list lol

My apologies if the answer is already common knowledge I am still fairly new

Than you

You discard the card. There is no damage. None whatsoever. Zero.

It is not to powerful. Most damage cards have the ship trait. Chances are that determination does nothing all game long.

off the top of my head it's slightly less than 1 in 4 (8 out of 33 I think) that have the ship trait - not a bad gamble for a 1 point EPT - good on Howlrunner - great on Leebo

Ah gotcha ya , thanks for the response , but I am thinking it might be nice on fat han , it just makes him that much more survivable

There are 4 Pilot cards:

Blinded Pilot - (Pilot) The next time you attack, do not roll any attack dice. Then flip this card facedown.
Damaged Cockpit - (Pilot) After the round in which you receive this card, treat your pilot skill value as "0"
Injured Pilot - (Pilot) All players must ignore your pilot ability and all of your (Elite Pilot Talent) upgrade cards.
Stunned Pilot - (Pilot) After you execute a maneuver that causes you to overlap either another ship or obstacle token, suffer 1 damage.
Now if you couple Determination with a R5 Astromech - that is a powerful combination for only 2 points - Especially with so many mangler cannons on the loose.
Blinded Pilot (2) PILOT
Console Fire (2) SHIP
Damaged Cockpit (2) PILOT
Damaged Engine (2) SHIP
Damaged Sensor Array (2) SHIP
Direct Hit! (7) SHIP
Injured Pilot (2) PILOT
Minor Explosion (2) SHIP
Minor Hull Breach (2) SHIP
Munitions Failure (2) SHIP
Structural Damage (2) SHIP
Stunned Pilot (2) PILOT
Thrust Control Fire (2) SHIP
Weapon Malfunction (2) SHIP

Biggs can't use Determination (EPT)?

Biggs can't use Determination (EPT)?

He can but he has to take the right 1 point Astromech to get an EPT slot to use.

Determination is nice and strong but also very niche. As mentioned it only works on 8/33 cards IF they come in face-up. Rexler's ability gets around Determination as do Saboteur and R2D2 crew. Of course you need a face-up card coming in and those haven't been so common.

Yep just realized that - would be cool if you could though. I edited the post to remove the comment about Biggs using it.

Funny how you have EPT on ships like a PS4 Tie Fighter, Tie Interceptor, Decimator, and even a PS3 A-Wing, but on many PS5 and PS6 named pilots - they do not get one.

To make Determination more powerful, you need two things:

A: The ability to take a greater-than-average number of Crits

B: The ability to see enough Pilot-based Crits.

One pilot in particular has astonishing synergy with the card: Leebo.

He has 2 agility, which leads to average die mitigation, and 5 hull, which is well above par for 2 agility.

When he's going to suffer a [KABLAM], he can deal himself 1-2 cards, and if any of them are Pilot based, he discards them both.

In an untouched Damage Deck, the odds of finding a Pilot-based crit are 8/33 + 25*8/32*32... a whopping 43.77% chance!

Moreover, in the event that you failed, you suffer the lesser of the two Ship-based crits, which is good enough to keep you cooking.

Your likelihood of receiving a Crit as part of the damage suffered increases as you buy defensive upgrades (to mitigate more [boom]s) or mobility upgrades (making it less likely that your opponent Focused to keep you in arc).

It also clearly increases if your opponent has built crit-fleets.

That be the one.

Just the brain getting lazy and not wanting to remember exactly what all of the various Rx units specifically are.

I just call him BadgeBot to keep things simple :)

The amount of games where Oicunn, Soontir, or Howlie, has taken an Injured Pilot crit has made me look towards Determination - every time I have 1-2 points left for upgrades.. :)

If you want a full-tank decimator, Determination on Kenkirk seems like the obvious thing to do.
