Jain Fairwood vs. Mimic OL card

By TallerThanYou, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

We are in a bit of a pickle and need help with interpretation of rules.

HERE IS THE SITUATION:

After performing a search action OL plays a Mimic card and because Jain is a scout the reaver can perform an immediate attack.

The Reaver hits and deals some damage (after a bad defense roll from Jain).

Jain is a scout and as a hero feat she may choose to take fatigue instead of damage but she is currently sitting at zero available fatigue tokens.

QUESTION:

Is Jain allowed to drink a Stamina Potion before or after this attack to replenish stamina and then use this freshly gained stamina instead of taking damage from the Reaver's immediate attack?

A mimic OL card from basic II deck reads:

"Play this card when a hero searches, before revealing the search token. Place a fatigue token on the search token. The search token is now treated as a minion Volucrix Reaver. Once defeated, the search token is immediately revealed and is considered searched by the closest hero.

Scout: The Volucrix Reaver may perform an immediate Skirmish action."

Searching is an action Jain performs. So I would say that
1. she cant take a potion while performing another action
2. even if the action is considered ended when the minion spawns, it says 'immediate skirmish action'. As in before anyting else happens. So before she gets a chance to take a potion.

At least thats how I interpret it.

EDIT: Scratch that, I forgot that stamina potion does not require an action. I guess she can then, but not sure.

I would say that if the attack was made before the potion was used. You would not be able to use the potion. Once the attack starts you need to finish it then anything else you can do will happen afterwards.

Stamina Potion text says Jain can use it during her turn and the Reaver is performing an attack during Jain's turn so I say use the potion.

I hope to see more opinions on this.

Stamina Potion card reads:

"Flip this card over during your turn to choose your hero or an adjacent hero.

The hero recovers all fatigue"

Stamina potion doesn't use an action. While ordinarily I might say something like "You can't interrupt an action except for a move action" there are actually a lot of examples of abilities that interrupt actions.

You'd have to bump this up to FFG, but as far as I can tell, it is still her turn so she can use it.

I'd also point out that when there's a conflict with timing, the person whose turn it is usually gets to decide the timing.

So since it's still Jain's turn, she could decide to "interrupt" with the potion before the reaver attack since the potion does not use an action.

I think this needs an FFG reaponse. Someone recently asked about Jain using a potion during an attack and the consensus was she could- however, it may be that the reaver's attack interrupts her turn. Some cards that allow immediate attacks- like counterattack or guard- say a monster's turn resumes AFTER the attack.

It might be possible according to RAW but it feel very strange.

According to Mimic card, Skirmish action is immediate and by definition immediate means INSTANT. How can Jain instantaneously use a potion?

Also, you guys forgot about one part of OP's question.

Is Jain allowed to drink a Stamina Potion before or after this attack to replenish stamina and then use this freshly gained stamina instead of taking damage from the Reaver's immediate attack?

Jain cannot drink the potion AFTER this attack to prevent damage. Per RAW, the attack action is resolve after all steps of the attack action are completed which includes the "deal damage phase". So when this last phase is being resolved, Jain has no fatigue available to prevent damage.

That is definitely true- the implication would be that Jaon may be able to drink the potion after dice are rolled but before damage is dealt.

The way I see it, is if Jain decides to drink the potion when the OL plays the card, before placing the reaver, she'd be ok, but not if drinks the potion after the reaver has been placed and performed it's immediate action.

As I mentioned earlier, this would be because drinking the potion could interrupt playing the OL card, but once the card is played, the "skirmish" action on the reaver's part is immediate.

In my opinion, this should not be allowed and I will probably house rule it if FFG officially allows it.

I agree with you Alarmed.

Thanks a lot for the comments everyone!

I think both Zaltyre and Alarmed have a point.

I have just sent this question to FFG and will post their reply here as soon as I get it!

There was a similar question asked once on BGG - here's the link: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1144208/question-about-during-your-turn

To quote the devs' response, "You cannot interrupt an attack with a “during your turn” ability. You can only trigger effects during an attack that have triggers that specifically apply to the attack (rolling dice, suffering damage, roll an “X”, etc.)"

Hey everyone.

Here is the reply I got from FFG.

I must say that after reading all your earlier posts I was expecting an answer like this :)

"In your example, Jain could not drink a stamina potion. “During your turn” timing refers to the “Perform Actions” part of a hero’s turn, and must be used before a hero takes actions, in between actions, or after all actions. “During your turn” timing cannot interrupt actions, with the exception of move actions. Jain therefore couldn’t interrupt a Search action to drink a stamina potion and as the Volucrix Reaver immediately performs an attack, she could not interrupt the attack to drink the potion either."
