Proton Rockets . . . wait, what? *double take*

By Avactus, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Proton Rockets seem pretty nifty, but just to clarify. With the Proton Rockets, when that ship attacks, it is still using it's primary weapon, so at range 1, it gets an extra attack die from the range.

To be fully explicit I just was fooling around with a squadron builder and threw this together without really even thinking it through, but it seems to work.

Talonbane Cobra (The shown as upcoming Khiraxz pilot.*fingers crossed for Vaksai Modification cards*) - When attacking or defending, double the effect of your range combat bonuses.

Opportunist

Proton Rockets

Stealth Device

38 pts.

If I am reading all of this right he should be able to dash in on a high priority targets face, and pop off an 9 attack die attack.

3 Normal Attack Dice

+3 Attack Dice from Proton Rockets/Stealth Device

+1 Attack Die from Opportunist

+2 Attack Dice from Primary Weapon at Range 1

And then, if he manages to get out of the situation he'll still be a very effective ship.

Is this correct? That seems obscene For only 38 points.

Secondary weapons dont have range bonuses. This is still secondary. The card starts with 2, you had 3 for agility and 1 for opportunist, for 6 total.

Proton Rockets, like all other missles, torpedoes, and cannons, is a secondary weapon and thus does not gain the bonus for range one. A ship with the upgrades you mention and base agility 3 would roll 6 dice, which is still impressive.

2 dice fom the Proton Rockets

+ 3 dice from the ships agility

+ 1 die from Opportunist

= 6

See pages 10 and 19 in the core rule book for details.

Edited: Proton Rockets also says "to a maximum of 3 additional dice" so the Stealth Device does not count either.

Fair enough. And, just to be clear the Kihraxz only has 2 evasion normally. So the SD is important. Also. Oh, I totally missed that it was 'added to this attack'. I thought it was adding dice to the primary weapon attack. Totally my misunderstanding. Thanks guys!

Prockets, as we affectionately nickname them, are double-take worthy.

However, they are NOT primary weapons, and therefore don't get the range bonus.

That being said, they ARE 5 dice at a max-base, and 7 as max possible (+2 from Jan Ors and Opportunist bonuses!)

They're also Focus-based, rather than Target-Lock based.

Best of all, they don't actually require you to spend the focus token to fire.

That means you still have it to modify your dice, so you can expect 3/4 damage per die.

At 5, 6, and 7 dice, that's 3.75, 4.5, and 5.25 expected damage each.

Moreover, being that its a Range 1 shot, you're fairly likely to have a Target Lock from a previous turn, so you're looking at 15/16 damage per die, for 4.69, 5.63, and 6.56 damage per die.

Epicly, if you're rolling 7 dice on an attack, you have a chance to 1-shot any ship with 4 shields and 6 hull... like the Firespray.

(The most dice a single pilot can throw in an attack phase, incidentally, is by N'dru Suhlak, with Cluster Missiles and Opportunist. If he has no nearby allies, that's 4 dice on each attack, with 1 extra on one of the two, for a total of 9... enough to theoretically reduce a Decimator from full health to 2, if every die rolls damage and every hit to hull comes up as Direct Hit).

Ah, I had not seen that preview. So you are right that Stealth Device adds one.

While N'dru can throw the most dice, Rexlar can 1 shot anything in the game with cluster missiles (and Yorr, and opportunist, and a TON of luck) due to his spend a focus to flip a damage card ability. It requires him to deal 2 minor explosion crits normally, resolve them positively - deal direct hit cards, spend the focus to flip the minor explosions back up, as well as flip the direct hits up, as well as the other 2 cards from the second cluster missile attack (which are directs as well), and then positively resolve the minor explosions, again.

So, to recap, first cluster attack w/ opportunist = 4 shields. Yorr eats the stress

2nd cluster attack w/ opportunist = 2 (face down or face up) direct hit cards dealt, 2 faceup minor explosion cards

Resolve minor explosions for 2 face down direct hits

Spend focus, flip up 4 direct hits, 2 minor explosions

Resolve minor explosions for 2 face down cards

End result - 4 shields, 4 direct hits, 4 face down cards, 16 total damage. Sadly, he cannot get the 17th in case the Decimator put a HU/SU on :(

This isn't quite the right place for this- but it's the ridiculousness of prockets on a-wings:

Tycho Celchu — A-Wing 26

Swarm Tactics 2

Proton Rockets 3

Veteran Instincts 1

A-Wing Test Pilot 0

Ship Total: 32

Green Squadron Pilot — A-Wing 19

Swarm Tactics 2

Proton Rockets 3

Ship Total: 24

Green Squadron Pilot — A-Wing 19

Swarm Tactics 2

Proton Rockets 3

Ship Total: 24

Prototype Pilot — A-Wing 17

Proton Rockets 3

If you can get them to range 1 of something. 20 dice alpha stricke at ps 10.

Unfortunately not.

Yorr cannot steal the stress from opportunist, since you must receive it to get the extra attack die. So only 1 opportunist. Which means you are 2 damage short of killing the Deci.

Bah humbug, you are correct. Sigh. So the Decimator is the only ship that CANNOT be 1 shot. Now if only there was a way to put Vader on Brath =P.
