Do crits rolled against squadrons count as damage, just no critical? Or do they not count as anything, and so only basic hits count?

They don't count at all, so only <hits> count.

That said if you had something that let you roll back dice vs Squadrons, the <crit> <hit> face would still count as a <hit>, but only do 1 damage.
