Transport & energy questions

By Stoneface, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I've read the Huge Ship rules and the rules that came with the transport expansion and most of what turned up in a search of the rules and have several questions.

Hopefully someone can help.

1) Ion tokens reduce the amount of energy I receive from movement. If I perform a 4 straight that gains me zero energy, do I still shed the ion tokens?

2) Backup Shield Generator. Shield recovery is 1 energy = 1 shield. Can I spend more than 1 energy to recover more than one shield?

3) Two damage cards with the SHIP header (hull breach) require enegy to be flipped face down. This is done in the use energy sub phase correct?

4) Tibanna Gas Supply. This has the energy header. Can this be used AFTER I have spent my other energy tokens? Can I choose the order in which to spend energy and activate the gas supply. For example I end my movement with 6 energy (Bright Hope). I spend 4 energy to flip over 2 face up Hull Breach damage leaving me with 2 energy. Can I then activate Tibanna Gas Supply for 3 additional energy, spend 3 on the WED Repair Droid (face down damage) as my action and keep 2 to use at the end of the round for the Backup Shield Generator?

This has to be one of the most confusing aspects of the game. You spend energy to do repairs thar aren't actions, you spend energy for repairs that are actions and you can spend energy after your turn is finished with the Shield Booster. This is giving me grey hair!

Edited to clarify 3 face down damage for the WED Droid.

1) yes you still remove all Ion Tokens after the Gain Energy step.

2) Once per opportunity. So only 1 shield can be recovered

3) Correct. They have the Energy header, and are used in the Use Energy Step

4)You choose the order when several cards can trigger at the same time, so yes.

StephenEsven,

Thanks for the reply! I disagree with your response to the BSG and I'll explain but I could be wrong and I don't want this to turn into one of those 7 page butt numbing sessions.

It's the last 5 words on the card: "up to your shield value". If the card had ended without that additional wording I wouldn't have had a question. Those 5 words imply, to me, that more than one shield can be recovered. Also the timing is suspect. At the end of the round. You can't be shot at again; even Horn's ability for a double tap would've passed. Obviously you can't RECOVER more shields than you've lost, so why the extra wording? You can see the source of my confusion. Any thoughts? I don't want to become a Rules Lawyer and the Rule of Thumb about doing what the card says and not what it doesn't, doesn't work here. Has FFG ever released anything on this?

Your thoughts please and I'll let it drop.

Thanks again for the respone and clearing up A LOT of confusion. The first couple of times using the Transport we spent more time with the rule book and huge ship faq than playing.

Back up shield generator explicitly says you may spend ONE energy to recover ONE shield. The "up to you shield value" part is just to make clear that you cannot gain a shield if you are already full. The card lets you gain a single shield per use, and over the standard rules, you can only use it once per opportunity, in this case at the end of each round.

I'm also not sure about the tibanna gas supply. It has been a while since I looked at the huge ship rules, but it remember there being an annoying timing issue with TGS and the order that you spent/gained energy.

TGS is an Energy header card, so it is used during the Energy Phase - Use Energy. It's a bonus 3 energy points to use in whatever order you want, up to the Energy Limit of the ship in question. Any excess is immediately lost, which is why the timing of the TGS is important. If you trigger it at the start of your Use Energy sub-phase before activating any other cards, it's possible you may have an excess.

I guess I'm too used to being very specific with grammar. Misinterpreting engineering specs can cost big bucks. Obviously you can't recover something until it's lost. The one for one exchange, energy for shielding is slightly different than the recover action where ALL of your energy is spent, on a one to one basis, to recover shields. For example 4 energy for 3 shields. I also thought the timing played a difference. The Recover action happens before combat and the BSG kicks in at the end of the turn. With the extra wording and the timing I figured FFG was giving you a small bonus for lasting through combat.

Thanks for clearing up all the confusion. I wish FFG would give a better breakdown/description for the energy usage.

Thanks for pointing that out. Yeah I used it out of sequence and lost a couple of tokens. Like I said in the original post you can use energy for repairs that aren't actions, some that are actions and after your turn is done. Confusing to be sure.
