Soontir Fel and TIE/Advanceds (plus Fighters escorting fighters)

By Ologotai, in Star Wars: Armada

I am struggling every game with my Rebel fighters to overcome this com bination. Anyone got any tips on how to take it down?

My opponent is taking Soontir, Mauler, a TIE Int, two TIE Advanced and a basic TIE. Soontir rocks up with TIE Advanced close, I have to attack them whilst taking auto-damage from Fel.

When I do get to Fel he has Scatter (which he can use twice and discard as well if under real pressure) and Counter-attack.

Got the closest ever to knocking him down last night by using Dutch with Yavaris, but in the end I lost all 4 X-wings and Dutch against my opponents loss of the two TIE Advanced and a Basic TIE.

On a separate point - does it strike anyone else as funny that TIE Advanced and x Wings give Escort protection to TIE Ints and A- Wings? Fighters escorting Fighters has been used in real life (Me109s covering bomber- destroying FW190s in WWII) but this involves the lighter, more nimble fighters protecting the heavier fighters - not vice versa.

I'd like to see Escort only apply to when an enemy squadron tries to engage a fighter squadron with the Heavy classification.....

Cheers

Dutch + Wedge might be worth your while alongside making use of the anti-squad armaments or nearby ships. Otherwise... use lots of X and A-Wings? That's all I got.

Escort frigates + AF2a = lots of anti-squadron dice

Use in conjunction with fighters, preferably X-wings

Add flight controllers

Use Galant Haven

Use Yavaris

Use Wedge - or some of the other aces as needed

Etc.

Some or all of the above. Focus on taking out key parts of his combo setup. Not easy, but you have options.

You can also use a ship to overlap the offending TIEs. With some luck/skill you can break up his formation (even if your opponent gets to place the fighters after the overlap, it's hard to keep them in perfect formation) and make it vulnerable to attack.

I have field a very similar list as your opponent several times. My difference is I have added Mauler, and Admiral Chiraneau.

There are two tricks to beating it. The first is to spread out. His tactic requires everything be clustered together. If you spread out, only a few of your squadrons will be engaged locked down. This will leave the rest of your squadrons free to engage on an as needed basis.

The second trick to crack it is to look for holes in the advanced engagement bubbles. Once the advanced are engaged, there should be a couple of points that you can move into to engage fel, but NOT the advanceds. When trying to kill fel, it's important to realized, you can use an accuracy result to ignore his brace. This makes him die much more quickly. Also, once you start attacking fel, don't stop until he's dead. He can only scatter once a turn, unless he discards it. And if he does that he should be going down very soon.

Combine that with a little anti squadron firepower from your ships and your in good shape. The fact that he is so clustered makes him especially vulnerable.

I had a dutch/wedge combo one shot vader and fel in a yavaris activation in this weeks game. Largely dependent one accuracy rolls.

I've fielded fel and advanced before. Absolutely savaged my opponents fighters, however he won the game. He had his fighters spread out so I could only engage a couple of them at a time. This gave 3 of his y-wings a chance to tear into my gladiator. They only got one turn before my fighters caught up to them, but one turn was all they needed.

Another really annoying thing for me was his a-wings counter attacks. Once his x-wings were dead those guys went down fast, but the counter attacks did a silly amount of damage to everything. I even thought fel was going to get killed while there were still advanceds around him because of the **** counter attacks.

I would recomend severl small clusters of a-wings and maybe an x-wing, spread out, in front of a group of y-wings or b-wings. Let him engage one of them, then try and delay him. Don't directly attack, let your counter attacks do the work so that soontir doesn't trigger and you can keep him occupied for as long s possible while your bombers and fleet deal with his ships.

Thanks all - helpful hints all :-)

For some reason I didn't appreciate that you could use an Accuracy dice to cancel a Scatter or Brace token on a squadron!!!

I have been so focused on "Crits not counting as hits" against squadrons that I forgot entirely about Accuracy results still applying when you attack Personality squadrons.

What a numpty.... I bet I rolled at least one accuracy dice in all those attacks on Fel last night :-)

It seems to be a common mistake. I suspect a lot of people see "crits don't count" and translate it in their head as "only hits count".

Man that lock out is the ONLY way I have one shot Fel. Hate that guy....

Honestly I was thinking of this package:

Tie Advanced x 5
Soontir Fel
"Mauler" Mithel

Every round I'm doing 1 damage to everything withing Mauler after engaging and shooting.
Soontir Fel damages anything that can't fire at him because of the tie advanced.
Tie Advanced shoot the crap out of everything.
It's a nice package to block the "Hero Team" builds with Yavaris

Are you including chiraneau on a ship that will stay nearby? Otherwise mauler can't move (and thus can't auto-damage) after he is engaged.

I also use dutch and wedge combo I find it the fastest way to kill fighters and with the brace tokens there hard to kill

H9/Warlord + gsd2 is an effective fel killer in mirror matches
