What colors should I use?

By Stokes52, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

This is my first time painting miniatures. I've finished most of the Imperial figures using Sorastro's guides. I'm using Citadel paints and I want to start painting the Rebels, but there are so many options for some colors that I figured I'd ask for people's opinions on what paints to buy. I want to economize my paint purchases as much as possible by buying paints that can be used on more than one figure.

I need a LIGHT BLUE color for the shirts on the Rebel Troopers. I want something that looks similar in color to these:

I am also looking for an all purpose LIGHT TAN and BROWN that can be used for Fenn's uniform, Gideon's coat, Diala's robe, Han's shirt, etc. I was thinking of using the brown for the Wookiees as well, but I'm not sure if it would look good or not.

I'm also looking for an all purpose OLIVE GREEN , and I can't decide between Castellan Green or Death World Forest.

What did you guys use to paint your minis?

I was painting a Flash Point: Fire Rescue hazmat technician the other night and I noticed that Altdorf Guard Blue mixed with some White Scar makes up a light blue color that's very close to the base shirt color of the rebel troopers. Of course for highlights you'd need to mix more White Scar into the mix. Another option would be a lighter scale of blue like Hoeth Blue or maybe even Lothern Blue but the latter seems to have a slight greenish tint to it. I think my personal choice for the rebel troopers is going to be Altdorf Guard Blue mixed with some white since I already own that paint.

I used Russ Grey as a base colour for the shirts on my rebel troopers and then mixed in one part of White Scar for each of the layers.

I believe I used 'Russ Grey' alone for the rebel trooper shirts. After it dried, I think I might have mixed in a touch of another rich blue to make it perfect, but I am very happy with my results.

I just have to say that I LOVE how almost nobody ever guesses the same colors - but we all seem to find the right colors anyway. So cool...

EDIT: Also, my olive drab color of choice was 'Castellan Green'

Ooh, right. Russ Grey. Completely forgot about that. Yeah, its light gray color with a blue tint is probably perfect for the rebel troopers. I think it's similar in effect to the Altdorf Guard Blue that's been dilluted enough with White Scar. But as there are more than 1 figure it's easier to get a consistent color for all of them when you don't have to mix paints.

Exactly - I hate having to mix because I'll have to remember the exact mix at least once more (for the highlights) and again if I want to share it with anyone. LOL

For my trooper shirts I basecoated in Russ grey then highlighted in fenrisian grey. All very grey sounding you might say, but I finished with the blue glaze, guilliman, and I'm really happy with it.

For the fatigues I basecoated in rakarth flesh, washed with agrax earthshade then layered back up with rakarth. Finished with a highlight of rakarth mixed with white scar. I would have used pallid wyche flesh if I had it. I love how this looks and use it a lot for backpacks and stuff like that.

The vest is useing "Sorastro's Black" which is standard mechanicus grey, heavy nuln oil wash, twice till you get it looking black with the grey poking through the raised areas as a highlight. Then some eshin or dawnstone grey to pop out the edges.

I'm not too happy with the helmets. Celestra grey wash and wipe with nuln oil then highlighted with ulthuan grey. A bit messy but does the job.

I might go back to these to darken all the joins where one colour meets the next. Oldenhammer does this and I think it looks amazing. I'll use surgically applied nuln oil for that.

****. Those look really good.

Rebel troopers and trandoshans are the only models I have left to start on, and they are a pretty imposing task.
