PS4 or Xbox One for new Battlefront?

By AdmiralThrawn, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Hey guys like many of you I saw the footage from the new Battlefront and freaked out. I can wait to get it, but sadly I don't own any of the consoles it will be released on. I only have an Xbox360, wii and wiiu. I'm not an avid gamer so I could use some advice. Which is better for the new battlefront, and which is generally cheaper to get?

I've always favoured the XBox over the Playstation. There are arguments for both and each come with their own brand of fanboy.

For me, it is simple. Playstation controllers are too small and break when raging. Xbox controllers are a little more comfortable for my big hands and .. after very thorough testing .. resistant to being 'dropped' onto walls.

I play Xbox, but mostly because of the Xbox-exclusive games (HALO).

I play Playstation, though I haven't gotten a PS4 yet. I say yet because Battlefront won me over. The reason I play Playstation is pretty simple. I like having free online game play. I don't know a lot about video games. I've always been a table top miniature gamer. But I've played X-Box and Playstation and really all things being equal (at least to a layman like me) I will take free internet content anyday. Oh and Killzone. X-Box doesn't have Killzone. lol

I'm an Xbox 360 owner, and have been holding off on next gen simply because of the massive library of games I have on the 360, and the fact that very little on next gen has appealed to me so far - only Witcher 3 and Battlefront have made me stand up and take notice so far.

However, now that Microsoft have announced backwards compatibility for 360 games is going to be a thing...

It's not even a contest the ps4 is flat out the more powerful machine because it wasn't hamstrung by the Kinect, the ps4 can actually run games in full hd unlike xbone which struggles to get 30fps at 900p.

But really buy a proper pc instead of a low end pc like the current gen consoles, they were underpowered at release and will never play games in 4k at 60fps.

A good PC costs what though? Plus the upgrades and maintenance. I agree, a good PC far surpasses the performance of a console, but after owning both (Bangin' PC and Xbox 360) i found myself playing Xbox out of convenience.

An Xbox one bundle with a handful of games is $500. You won't find a good gaming Pc for that price range.

Couldn't agree more. A console is a dedicated gaming platform, whereas a PC has to be expensively built to reach the same level of performance.

Plus of course, Xbox Live and PSN ensure standard functionality across the user base - everyone's using the same hardware, everyone's using the same service, it's pick up and play, no additional effort required.

I haven't used a PC as a gaming platform for over a decade, and I doubt I would again.

However, now that Microsoft have announced backwards compatibility for 360 games is going to be a thing...

Now this is big. My major drawback with the PS4 is that it's not backwards compatible. I got in on the PS3 when it first came out and got one of the "Fat Boys." Fat Boy PS3s are backwards compatible with PS2 games. And then for some reason they removed that feature from later versions of the console.

I don't like many video games but the ones I do like I'm very fond of. Those games are on PS3. I think it was a big mistake not to make the PS4 backwards compatible. I don't own any X-Box 360 games so it's a moot point. However if I did you can bet it very well could be the feature that swayed me from a PS4 to an XBox One, Free online content or no.

Ahh i see your under the misconception the xbone isn't a PC, it is it's using an x86 architecture like a PC, it's using a hard drive like a PC, it has a cut rate 7770 gpu like a PC.

You can know for sure its a PC because when windows 10 comes out you can cross platform with other PC players, you can even download mods for fallout 4 onto it just like a PC.

It's a crappy low power gaming machine with extremely limited functionality but what your buying is undeniably a PC.

The only thing;s consoles ever had going for them was exclusives and those always come out on PC anyway, a little later sure but always a more polished experience unless its made by konami.

^ true.

I see these new gen of consoles as media centres though. Agreed, the combined components look like that of a PC. But the software utilised is vastly different. You'd never consider typing up a resume, making cards with strange eons or even reading these very forums on a console.

I think FTS Gecko made a good point. You plug it in and play. No messing about with steam, no fiddling to get a better FPS, etc.

PC's are much better if it is your thing. Personally, I just want sit in front of the TV, drink a beer/coffee and blaze my mates for an hour or 2.

There is no argument though that specific types of games suit various platforms. FPSs are console games, RPGs are

Much better on PC.

But because you can't adjust settings your stuck to 30 fps and below, no game you own will ever run at 4k, I haven't played a game under 60fps in years.

current gen was obsolete when released and you'll be left further and further behind as the years roll on, by comparison there are steam machines that will leave them in the dust for $100 more that will get the same games as well as having a massive back library and an active modding community.

And on the near horizon we have services that will stream games to a box plugged into your telly that runs on state of the art hardware with next to no input lag.

Unless there's an exclusive you can't live without there's no good reason to own a current gen console.

I love my 360 to the point I've had two red ring and still come back for more, I have a ps3 but apart from uncharted and the last of us it always lost out to the 360, but this time around there's no pull towards either because my three year old pc can play things like watchdogs better than the newer purpose built consoles.

Go with Xbox One. It has the best exclusives, best computing power when online, the kinect sensor adds more control to games that use it and some of those games give you a 20% damage boost just because you used the kinect. Another big reason to go with Xbox over the other systems is security. On the playstation 4 you have to pay to play online and despite the extra money Sony is getting their systems are very vulnerable too hacking, they are hacked a lot Sony/Playstation. They were even taken to court in the EU because these issues. Microsoft / Xbox has rarely been hack and successfully ddosed. Your security software is constantly updated for free. The PC is only as secure as the package you buy for security, the best are obviously the most expensive. The problem is the second a new security system is put out in the market the hackers also buy this package and practice finding ways too hack it, burn it, eat it with infectious viruses.

Also I am not seeing hardly any PC exclusive games now days that make me feel like I need a new pc. I got a Pentium 3 windows 2001 and the games on it are the best imo to ever come out on a pc.

Battlefront isn't going to be a good enough game that you should let it skew your console selection.

I would have to disagree with you on that one.

I had been on the fence completely about which one to buy. To the point where I haven't bought one, yet - there simply has not been a reason. (I also considered a Steambox, but given Steam being, well, Steam, I haven't been sold on the idea.)

However, since I've been playing an Xbox since the original launched, I have quite a library of Xbox and Xbox 360 games stashed. Combined with the free upgrade for Destiny from my Xbox 360 to an Xbox One, the announcement that the Xbox One will be backwards compatible with Xbox 360 (and perhaps someday original Xbox) titles, and the fact that companies are finally about to stop releasing games for Xbox 360... and I think I will end up buying an Xbone.

And ding-dong the witch is dead! The last Xbone franchise to require Kinect has announced that Kinect will no longer be required going forward. IOW, Kinect is dead. May it rest in peace. Forever .

ETA: Nobody knows how Battlefront is going to be. Anything about it is nothing but speculation at this point. Including the pre-Alpha gameplay footage.

Errrrr.......... no.

No thanks.

Pretty much this. I bought the original Xbox at launch, the 360 about 18 months after launch, and now I'm likely to pick up the Xbone two years after launch.

I can't fault Microsoft's service at all - they repaired one RROD 360 free of charge, which worked perfectly for four years afterwards until I traded it in for a version with a larger hard drive., and for the price of £40 a year I'm getting a reliable dedicated gaming service (plus access to a huge range of TV and music apps) and a free game every month.

I have a back catalogue of approximately 30 digital downloads plus DLC and more games on disc, the fact that I will now (eventually) be able to play (most) of those games on an XBONE makes the choice pretty clear imho.

You realise devs only added Kinect functionality at gun point that expensive pos reduced available power by 10% and is the reason so many went to ps4 because it doesn't flaming work, I've watch my mate using his it doesn't obey commands half the time it takes twice as long to navigate as it does to use the controller.

You'll also note sales only went up after they removed it because no one wants to feel like a part by talking to a console.

Im having the same dilemma over a new console for elder scrolls and fallout 4 when its out.

I have an xbox360 at the mo and i love it.

I used to be a playstation guy and loved how the transition from PS1 to PS2 let you use your old PS1 games on the PS2.

You couldnt do this with the PS3 and more of my friends had Xboxs so i swtiched to a 360 for that 'generation'

early reports of how the xbox 1 would be 'constantly on' and monitoring your room put me off as did the 'no preowned' thing on xbox1 but im under the impression both these are no longer and issue as they were very unpopular.

So i'm still debating which platform to jump to as my next console.

Given that I the *only* insentive to stay with the xbox format is i can port some online saves like 'state of decay' over and i think the controllers are compatible i may well switch to playstation

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit but it seemed more sensible than creating a new one, given its sort of the same dilemma.

I personally would go with a PC. People keep making this ridiculous argument about how expensive PCs are, but it really isn't that much more expensive than a console, plus you get extra utility, AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE BLOODY CONTROLLERS!! That alone makes PCs better imho.

If you've already got an Xbox 360 and have downloaded games/DLC for it, then go Xbox One. Simples.

I must have shelled out at least £200 on games & DLC over the life of the console, and got another £200 worth through Games on Gold. Being able to play them on XBONE is a huge plus on it's favour.

Im right in thinking the controllers are compatible yeah?

Likewise guitar hero instruments?

Haven't the foggiest about the controllers, I'm afraid

I dont really care about Kinect Features being forced into games, the ones I play adds extra control over the character I play as esp in ALIEN: Isolation and Crimson Dragon. In Isolation the Kinect actully uses data gathered from scans of my heart rate to effect the game, which is an interesting feature. Both versions of the Kinect works fine, before using them your required to Calibrate them so they can correctly follow your motions and voice commands. The Kinect 2.0 also comes with two training programs to teach new users how to use a Kinect. I have a feeling lots of people skip doing a calibration and the training sims. It also has been a useful tool for screen captures or in game recording. As a general utility device its been extermly useful too me because I am very busy, when I am working and I want to change a program but I am not in the same area as my controller I will just give it a voice command.

You cant use 360 controllers on the Xbox One. Besides exclusives being a insentive, security is a big insentive. Sony has done a terrible job keeping their systems safe from hackers. Also if your playing online with the Xbox One your system capabilities are boosted by the cloud. Even better is that the cloud acts as a double save for all your games. If something were too happen too your Xbox, like someone steals it or it gets damaged by Lightning, you could get a new Xbox One and Microsoft will give you back all your saved data.

What extra utilities?
