Drasnighta's Quick Fleet

By Drasnighta, in Star Wars: Armada

These pale destroyers, I went back and actually rewatched A New Hope and all I can say is 'that is how the movies'. They really are that bright. Comparatively, the TIE Fighter game had very dark grey; iconic movies versus iconic game, the differences between them take some getting used to.

I'd have to see about the yellow OSL just because the hull is such a light colour and the background colours are white and golden (wall and table). Aaah, so that's how an unsocketed bridged VSD looks, eh? That is very good to know.

The ivory colour on those rebels are still wonderful, but the pale grey picks up surface detail in the Imperials very well. I agree, it's a lovely surface texture. Still, I'm looking forward to seeing those corvettes :) Thanks mate, and well done again. Imperials look like they're coming along nicely!

The OSL should look better with a Playmat background, but alas, there will be no pics of that unless I both get batteries by the weekend (which is planned), and I decide to take the Imperial Fleet to Sullust (Which is still up in the air. Can't decide on a list...)

The OSL was overdone... Ink on Light, with a 2-year old messing up the old steady hand... But its good enough, especially at Arms Length for the Tabletop View... Which I'm resolved to painting for, now... Forget tiny details that you'll only see up close, go for the long view... I'll Tiny Detail in a couple of years when the Kiddo's in school.

I know I played X-Wing and TIE fighter, but I don't remember playing them. Certainly I don't recall them as much as I do the Movies, because I watch them routinely... Especially now with my Kiddo in tow. So for me, Star Destroyers are White...

I didn't want to go completely white, as far as I am concerned, White is a horrible colour to work in, because its shadows, shading and highlighting are just so **** finicky... Which is why I have a suite of Offwhites...

(For those interested in Offwhites, Reaper does some great Offwhite collections - my favourite was the triad that had Linen White (Slight yellow tint, closer to a pure white), Leather White (A very cool grey) and Ghost White (Slightly Blue)...

If I do get my Camera up, I'll slap some paint down on a dark pallete to show the differences... I was using the Linen White as a slight highlight to the Ivory of the Rebel ships, as it kept the warm colour, whereas going to something like Skull White or White Scar of the GW line was adding Cool over Warm, and was not subtle enough.

I had 20 minutes today, so I knocked over more Advanced and Bombers just in case... Which means that, on top of the commission work, I've now got all but 2 squadrons of Interceptors painted out of a Double-Set of Rebel and Imperial Squadron Packs of my own...

All I need now to decide on is wether I take the Rebels, with the Invisible Truth, the Cleansing Fire, The Enlightened Path, the Alacrity and a Couple of Squads of As and Ys, or wether I break down and do that Double Victory (The Tempest and the Crusader) + Tarkin, with 100 Points of Imperial Squadrons (Rhymer, 3x Bombers, Vader, 3x Advanced) and go to town that way...

'bout 75% done on the 'Vettes...

Still have to do engine exhausts and other details.

Aye, they usually do look better with the darker and more dramatic background. Brave choice to take those Nebulon's for a list. Freezing rain, exhaustion, and someone didn't want me to go so I had to pass that one up. I even got the custom made list sheets and all, they're so pretty. Glad to hear it was a good turnout though :)

That is pretty good idea when it comes to retasking the tiny detail. The OSL is pretty good, I'm just surprised it's a subdued effect is all. You're right on white, no question. Especially since as you showed, there's white then ivory, and the shades with it. I like the blue shade, but that's just because it's clean, it's not easy to keep that way with the highlighting and shades where this off-white brings out some really nice texture. It's very soft and natural which I think fits the scale.

-laughs- I wish I knew why a game is easier to imprint compared to a movie that I've seen so many times. Oh well. Those corvettes look nothing like the game, yours are far nicer than TIE fighter's plain ol' grey boats with a single blue line for 'elite military upgrade' :) They are a great colour but like I said with E503, that pall cross design is a really inspiring draw for me. More over, the actual colouration on the ivory stands out really quite well from this angle. I'm pretty interested in the details to make it really pop that last little bit. Well done, gah, yeah, you've convinced me: I'm committed to a CR-90 when they get back in stock.

3rd Nebulon B Frigate added, and as soon as I get a naptime with the boy today, I'll finish up Engines and Details on the 'Vettes and post them up...

So, I finally Acquired that Firespray.

So, Kath Scarlet and the Binayre Pirates.

Painting is at about 50% so far.

Thinking of going back and adding the 'hump' to bulk out the Z-95 shape a little better... Plus that'll give me more opportunity to retouch the paint on them, as well...

Still needs at least a good wash and highlight... Will try diluting some black for those panel lines a bit later.

Primary White was a layer of Reaper Snow Shadow, then a touchup of Ghost White (for the ever-so-slightly Blue-White, to differentiate from the Bone/Brown White of the Rebels).

Red so far is just Mephiston Red base, but will be getting Evil Suns Scarlet as a brightener once the wash is on it.

That is a great idea when it comes to the Rouges and Villeins expansion adding escorts add some theater to it all.

Cleaned Kath up some more, got a few more layers and Highlights on.

And now also about 50% on the Falcon... Need to put a few patchwork bits on the surface, and maybe some of that little red markings...

10 minutes of Painting this morning.

Nym's White muddied out a little with the wash, so I'm going to go back and retouch and rehighlight him there... So I call him about 50% now.

Also, one order of Fresh Mouldy Crow.

Crow1.jpg

Nice work.

Some Super-Macro Shots.

Boba is jsut Basecoats... Needs Shading, Highlighting, Washing, Weathering and Details...

Man, I hate SuperMacro so much... I totally missed a white highlight on the upper part of Kath... and the Scarlet really could use a final edge highlight, too...

... Mouldy Crow's engines look terrible in the shot, but not so bad in the flesh...

... Totally missed Nym's Turret, too...

::sigh::

Need more than 20 minutes on these to be happy with them... Probably the most time I've spent on anything non-ship... and close to most time on any single Armada project as it is...

Love the checker pattern on those Z-95's. The cockpit highlights are spot on! So, bloody well done mate.

The Z-95's are really good conversion, hunchback or not. Hmm, might I ask, how does the plastic hold? It feels like a really weird material, so what are you using for a bond? Standard superglue or a plastic cement? Anyhow, it's great to see. It's a great modification on its own, but to see them escorting a firespray is pretty unique. I don't think I've even heard a whisper of that as a concept before, but it really works to differentiate Kath from Fett. yep, reaaally really liking it.

Can't wait to see the rest. :)

Straight up Superglue. Specifically, Krazy Glue "Advanced" in the little Orange Squeezer that I picked up at Sobeys.

The Plastic is hard. Cutting it straight was an effort, as it really wanted to start to split and then go flying. I tried to keep the spare S-Foils, but I lost two of them to flying across the room.

The good thing is, as long as the join section is flush, the Glue sticks fantastically. It feels as strong as the bond can be... I've even tried to bend the barrels to straighten them, without supporting the join, and it didn't feel like it would give at all...

And let's face it, I have plenty of X-Wings to try conversions with in the meantime...

I'm staring at the orange stuff right now, it's on my work table, so good to know that works so well on the fighters. Plastic on their ships sure is hard, but after the weird way in which the mold lines stick after trimming, I was pretty concerned with hacking them apart. -laughs- flying S-foils... more memories of TIE fighter. Yep, going to have to try it. Thanks for the inspiration mate, I'm a little less terrified of working with the fiddly things now.

Solid Pressure trim with a Scalpel (standard GW Issue with a Fresh blade). Slight Sawing motion with the pressure helped alleviate the snapping/flying :)

Slave One. Tidied up. Shaded. Highlighted (all bar the Cockpit)

Just need to work on the faded paint and damage before calling him done.

Total Elapsed Time

73 Painting Minutes. (And 44 seconds)

Bossk in the 'Tooth still needs his teeth details, as well as a grey highlight... And the IG-2000 needs to be a bit brighter... But at least Dengar's Punishing One came together Super-Quickly.

GroupShot.jpg

Nice. Love the Z-95s with the Firespray, that's a nice touch.

Snagged a commission for someone from the Forums... So, Yay for That, but it means my own stuff will be pushed back until its done, including the Z-95 Retouch, and a MonCal Repaint...

Great work!

Been busy with that Commission.... Which is about 80% done... Just got to do the Kath+Z95s to call it done...

But, in 20 minutes Spare...

Start of the MonCals:

MonCals.jpg

Still need to do the Linen White colour correction (as they're a little bone now) and the Purple is only basecoated on the MC80.... Plus a certain 2 year old someone got some purple fingerprints on the bow ahead of the purple line, tahtwill need to be covered up...

Work is never done.

When/If I have permission, I'll show the progress of the commission, too...

Wow, that is a really bold streak on the MC80! I really like it. Also, the fingerprint can be passed off as battle damage. It looks like scorch marks on the hall.
