Drasnighta's Quick Fleet

By Drasnighta, in Star Wars: Armada

Adding more Pictures as they're done...

Starting off with the Core Set...

Ten Minute TIEs.
(Still WiP. Once finished, I'll have some nice Scenery to put them on)

After a Magic Card Windfall to the tune of $240... I managed to get one of everything for Wave 1... So Expect more Pictures incoming...

just trying to decide on a signature colour for the Rebels... Maybe I'll do a nice Purple on the Capital Ships.

Nice, veeeery nice Drasnighta. The lines are nice and crisp against those wing brackets, the choice of having the Rebel painted fighter is pretty terrific (I see you're using it for Howlrunner... for some reason, the careening, dangerous to be around bit kinda seem like a Mithal thing :P), and the choice of blue for the cockpit is pretty unique. I like it.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you do next. I'm just trying to imagine purple on a cap ship. (I'm not against it, not even a bit, I'm really curious.)

I may switch it over to Mithal - It's Howlrunner at the moment, mostly because when it was painted, all I had was the Core Set :)

And none of the components are glued - so I might just pop the 3-stand out and swatch it over...

It sounds pretty good to me, and having more choices is always great. It was a real creative move to go with that Rebels paint scheme, given that it can be used for anyone. So it really could fill in for either TIE Ln ace, and with switched out wingmen it could probably fill in for anyone but Vader ^_^. It's a really fantastic, utilitarian choice, so I have to applaud it!

Any other ideas for aces or cap ship patterning, going in to the Wave 1 stuff?

I like your painted TIE Fighters you did a nice job on them.

Michael

Okay, Rebels up next...

X-Minute X-Wings...

Well, more like XV-Minute X-Wings... I really, really did not want to spend a lot of time on them, mostly because 1) my Two-Year-Old won't let me, and 2) they're tiny so I just want them to fit in...

So, still a bunch of work to do - some highlighting, some shading, some re-touching colour, as they ended up a little too muddy from the wash.

DSCF5189.jpg

Better pictures once I actually finish them.

Concept for Purple. I admit, I'm more infamous around here in the WFB circuit for my Vampire Counts being nice rich Purples and Pinks in colour for the most part... So this is very much an identifing colour for me...

Starting simple - Recolour the Red areas to Purple... Touch up the colour overall to work out *if the colour can be matched for the bone/ivory*...

I think I got close.

Simple recolour only. Perhaps the second Corvette will get a different set of areas painted.

I also did the Nebulon-B at the same time, but didn't take pictures, as, well, its colour is just a line...

VERY crappy Picture. To be taken again, again, when I've actually finished them... So this is another WiP

Love the light reflecting off the x-wing cockpit glass, works brilliantly.

I like the proof of concept purple so far Drasnighta.

The X's are all well and good, but blast they are one of the most frustrating things to paint. Still, those Red squadron X wings look bright and clean, though I was surprised they were red rather than purple, the blue's a nice touch for an ace. Are you going with a black or tinted wash?

Anything more drastic for colour markings in the works? Or will there be purple accents like the Redemption's red stripe? (I saw a picture that I think was based on Rebels, that had a kind of neat dorsal stripe on the CR-90, just curious on the balance between purple and grey as it seems like a nice mix).

As for the touch up ivory colour on the CR-90, ugh, I'll be honest and say I tried to get that colour, then I just painted the whole thing over after a wash and lived with the different hull patches. I like the purple on that lighter grey, it's got more contrast than the red does.

Purple and pink Vampire Counts, hmm? Actually, my opponent has a purple and crimson army so I know how good it can look... reminds me, time to form up a 3K Bretonnian list for a VC thing. Anyhow, best of luck, and I'll looking forward to what's next.

I went with Red because I was originally going to paint just Luke with Red, and then got carried away... As it is, they'll end up Purple if I decide on Purple for the Fleet... One blue because it was going to be different... I may leave just one Blue and one Red, for Wedge and Luke, and make the Bulk of the line Purple...

Or, admit that I'm just not likely to use the X-Wings, and paint the other Squadrons (A-s B-s and Y-s) purple instead...

It was a tinted brown wash.. The X-Wings and the Corvette have the same wash, only that the Corvette is over the original colour, whereas the Squadrons were primed white... But because of the texture difference, the **** Squadrons tinted right brown.

Next up are TIEs anyway, started with Bombers, while I try to decide on how to mark out Rhymer.

Then I'll go back to the Second CR-90 and decide if it warrants a total repaint, with different markings...

Ideally, owning two of each of the small ships, they'd be market individually.

Touch more work today.

Frigate on the Left, simply has its Red Stripe turned to Purple.

Centerline Corvette and Right Frigate have been made "Factory Fresh"... In that I repainted the Bone sections to Match. And, I think I got the colour **** close on them, while I decide on marking schema.

I mean, the colour is so organic and inconsistent itself - its different on the 3 sections of the "unpainted" Frigate - the stardrive, the upper hull, and the lower Tower, all sport subtle (and not so subtle) differences in its White/Bone colouring... So I'm happy with the match.

Also, colour reference pedigree...

... Since painting this army, I've had a shoulder injury and I had to quit my Job at GW, due to the fact that we had our Firstborn and someone had to stay home to look after him - so my painting skill has gone backwards in almost 3 years of no use... (Kiddo's recently turned 2 and almost at the point where I can get a lot of time)...

VC.jpg

So they're some nice colours.

(Picture taken at TournamentOP 2013, where I walked away with Best Sportsmanship)

Started to repaint the Assault Mk II... I am a masochist, trying to paint in 34C / 0% Humid. temperatures.

Drasnighta, I got to admit... I did the exact same thing with the Red X-wings. It was only after painting up an 'Argent' Squadron of X-wings with the fighter box, that I went back and did something different (and by different, I just mean blue... so the same :P )

Ahh, yep, I use a similar dark brown/umber wash to give it a less stark appearance and add a bit of warmth to the colour palette. I had the same issue there too, in the end I had to selectively wash just the most recessed edges, or else all the fighters just appeared ivory. That might be fine for some applications, but I get the frustration.

It's always hard to decide with regards to the CR90's in particular, the only ones we see in the movies are basically the gunmetal grey or slight red striped Tantive IV, so it makes trying to blend individuality with thematic similarities so the ship doesn't look drastically out of place. I still like the purple, I'd say individuality is the way to go. Thankfully, the CR90's have a lot of plates and good lines.

I do like the factory fresh look for the Neb, and that is a pretty close match from the picture. The nature of these ships with their own organic colours really are terrific as it gives them some scale by dding imperfections. I'm looking forward to what you're doing with the Tie Bomber and the Assault fri- wait, 34 degrees and 0 humidity? For the love of Negash, please say you're using a wet palette; the acrylics just cannae take th' pressure, cap'n! (It's only 31 and 0 here, but yeash).

Veeeery very nice VC's mate, I am impressed. Love the richness of those colours. Trust me, I'd ask a whole lot more questions as I'm still a WFB fan, all things considered, buuut I'll leave ya' in peace for now ;) . But congrats on Best Sport, I always placed a ton of value on that award. Hmm, just so it doesn't sound like my opinion comes from nowhere:

25rgivo.jpg

There's my pedigree, not everything's painted like that because I've gotten really-really lazy. Sorry to hear about a shoulder injury, I've seen how they really put a damper on just about everything.

.... AND a drying retarder that I usually keep on hand for wet blending...

DSCF5191.jpg

Small Fleet Update. Started to get some more Purple down, ahve to get a lot of Ivory fixed on the Corvette...

AND, started on the Assault Frigate... THAAT is going to need a lot more work. Liquid Mask didn't do a great job, and as it is, I'm probably going to have to texture up the grey areas anyway... Once I slowly get rid of all of the white overflow, rebalance the colour, AND get more lining in the edge panels.

I'm really unhappy with this so far. BUT, to borrow (and modify) the IT term... PEBPAC.

DSCF5194.jpg

I have been tempted to repaint the hull plating in ivory to give it a similar look to the Neb-B, but I also want to do a third Neb-B in Imperial grey. Not trying to be critical, but it looks like you went thick on the paint over the red. Did you have issues with the red showing through?

Not especially thick over the red... Just masked off the already light grey areas and then dusted a primer and then repainted - the paint is the same thickness on the red as it was on the green-grey of the main hull...

It just ended up patchy and bleh in the heat - was the wash mainly.

But, that being said, I spent a bit of the 20C night touching it up, and after the main heat dies down today, I'll have another picture.

More Work done. About Halfway. More Touchups, and a LOT more Panel-Line Washing to be done... But at least its coming along now. Spent FAR TOO MUCH time on it already.

DSCF5199.jpg

And a picture of the Combined Rebel Fleet so far... A-Wings are on the Painting Block once I get the AFII done.

DSCF5196.jpg

Fleet looks good all together! Ready for epic space battles over disputed pieces of black felt!

Update on the way... Imperial Squadrons just about all done, including distinctions for Elite Squadrons... Pics coming as soon as Batteries charged.

So, let's see...

DSCF5200.jpg

Rebels Tie switched back to Howlrunner... Mostly because I read something on Mauler Mithel having Flames to mark his kills... So, he got Flames.

DSCF5201.jpg

Its also Super-Subtle, but one of the Tie Advanced is in Blue-Grey instead of Straight Grey.. Its too Subtle for a Wing Leader, so no Darth Vader yet...

Also, No Rhymer. I told myself I'd have to hold off on that until I get more Bomber Squadrons.

DSCF5202.jpg

A-Wings.

In Purple. Purple for the rest. If I get more A-Wings, they'll be in the "standard squadron" colour of Purple wings and white Fuselage. Keeping the Fuselage for the "Elite" Squadron...

B-Wings are Next.

I have flames on my ship.....I have FLAMES on my ship!*”

While Mauler reminds me of that little Roman candle Tie fighter in RotJ, I adore the look. It's practically screaming 'metal' in the Ghostrider kind of way. I like the bloodstripe on that interceptor too (I can't do straight lines well, sounds weird but it's true). Looks good, it stands out against the darker colouration, and I'm still a big fan of those blue canopies.

On the topic of fighters, I adore those A-wings, particularly Tych. The blue highlights melded with bone and rich purple are simply fantastic. Now I'm all jealous! Can't wait to see the B-wings! Oh, and good choice on not including Rhymer quiiite yet (I'm doing the same. Him and one other flight just seems kinda wrong).

I'm still liking the variation on the CR90's, and the Assault frigate turned out well (especially given the bloody scorching temps). Touch ups look good and it's a nice colour combination.

*the reference is about as old as Star Wars :P

ALL the X-Wings went into the soup today.. So expect a repainted update somewhere in the week... To at least bring them into the standard Purple Scheme...

Although Luke + Wedge will Vex me... How to make them look different, and still semi-canon inspired... Urgh.

I am liking the purple. Glad to hear you are bringing the x-wings in line with the rest of the theme.
