Star Wars Battlefront

By Imperial Advisor Arem Heshvaun, in X-Wing

Yeah, but they fixed everything for BF4. It was only bad for a little bit. BF4 is a game I still play all the time. So will Battlefront be. I don't mind one month of bad gaming for a good couple of years of awesome game.

I could see that being a pre-alpha too (though my predominately pessimistic attitude makes me feel pre-rendered cinematic is more likely)

So, you think they are just lying when they say "in game footage"?

it has happened before, there was a huge howdydo surrounding the game Watch Dogs which paraded around far superior graphics in its gameplay trailer than made it to the game.

Aliens: Colonial Marines was just an out and out scam.

I realize it is incredibly paranoid of me to cast this sort of doubt, but the precedent has already been set since such acts have been practiced before. There are some obviously scripted events within the trailer (which could well have just been a part of a demo level or added on in the end) and some curiously specific dialogs being spouted out at specific times (unless these multiplayer matches are all scripted like campaign missions, which would be amazing! )

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade for this very long awaited game, but I'm exercising caution. I am, however, very paranoid by nature :)

also, tiny observation. Anyone find it funny that the rebels hint at customizable characters (how else would you choose between species?) but the imperials won't ever get to see them because of the trooper helmets :P ?

By comparison I'm tempted to preorder fallout and get that pipboy.

Already done. It's an incredible deal if you're as huge a fan of Fallout as I am. I can finally rock a decent Lone Wanderer Halloween costume since that's the hardest part of the costume to figure out normally! That means Sith Anakin costume will have to be shelved though...

The Imperials certainly CAN get customizable characters. Biker scouts, Stormtroopers, Snowtroopers, and various other types NOT seen in the films IE Darktroopers, etc I'm certain will be options for visual preference.

This trailer makes the game seem almost unrealistically cool.... so I'm putting my cynical self aside for the moment and just feeling a warm fuzzy. I mean, this is how we SHOULD feel right? We don't want a trailer that looks bad.

And I'm ok with Luke being ROTJ Luke - it may not makes thematic sense, but maybe it's just ONE Luke for the whole game? Or maybe they only have ONE Luke done for the pre-alpha?

But even if not, I think ROTJ Luke would work best for THAT level. Think about it, everything is White. Black characters are going to stand out. And if you give Luke his Hoth suit, he'll blend right in. If you give Luke his Blue Lightsaber, he'll blend right in. The ROTJ Luke color scheme works better for the significance that his presence on a digital battlefield will likely have. If he were dressed like in the films, he might run the risk of being camouflaged, and it coudl be grossly imbalanced, compared to Vader sticking out like a sore thumb.

It is funny about the Troopers, but at least they will look different between classes. Maybe there will be small bits you can customize?

As for the various sounds, that's not scripted. They are in BF4 right now. There are a ton of little things they say. If you drop an ammo crate, it says, "Here's some ammo for you". If someone spots a tank it will say, "Enemy armor east of you". There are a ton of things like that. You can even command some, like , "I need a medic!" when you want someone to drop a med pack.

To me, it just looks they are taking the same game engine, improve the graphics, and then adding in Star Wars stuff. Game balance and all that takes time to get right and map tweaking, too.

Stormtroopers should get sick bumper stickers on their helmets. There's your customization.

It shouldn't of been bad for any length of time, but EA set a date and rush it out ready or not same with SIM city and other games, and they have a very nasty habit of closing servers as soon as the sequels out.

the Troopers look have historically varied with the class (if I remember right, the base trooper shares the same armor + helm with the engineer and the heavy but all have different paint schemes, the snipers have the Endor helmets, and the jetpackers having freaking jetpacks!). If customizable characters end up being a thing (not guaranteed nor advertised, mind, just speculation of my end) I can see decal being an option.

I havn't played BF4 so I don't recognize the similarities :P

if it's a straight port, though, then the engine is basically perfect because that looks exactly like a high def Star Wars Battlefront 2. As long as it has third person perspective (which it seems to have, going by the coop trailer and the tie fighter scene) then I'd be sold

Yeah, but it was. It did suck that the first month was bad. Did that mean that the game sucked, though? I mean, for a month, yes, but beyond that? Was it a bad game? Was it something terrible? Was it something you wouldn't play? Or do people just like to focus on the negative and want to ***** about every bit they can. If it comes out and the first month is bad, I'll not like it. That won't mean that the game won't be awesome after that month.

If a game does not work right I get a refund I don't wait a month For it to get fixed, what's more I'm not likely to buy it again until it's massively reduced in price.

I'm not the game industries *****, if I spend my cash they better deliver a working product.

Then wait a month after it comes out to see if it's not glitchy. I'm patient and only buy 1-2 games a year to play the heck out of. I'm fine if the first month is not stellar.

in all seriousness, the fact that EA's reputation is not a good one should be common knowledge from years ago. Let's keep it fun and star warsy, since nothing we'll speculate will affect the final product anyway :P

Yeah but being a star wars game is also a worry given how poor they've been over the last decade.

The bitterness and pessimism is strong with this one ^

Yeah but being a star wars game is also a worry given how poor they've been over the last decade.

...but poor for one month doesn't mean the game won't be good! If you just look at the past, it will only be bad for one month, but then the game will kick butt! If that's what it takes to make a good Star Wars game, I'll deal with it.

Scepticism not pessimism, I go off all available evidence and form my opinion like everyone should but sadly most don't, it's highly gullible to trust EA will deliver a good game given all evidence.

Am I wrong about the last decade? Because I'm pretty sure the games we all remember fondly were from the 90's with a few good ones from the early 00's.

Let's see... games I love dearly:

Battlefield 1942, Vietnam, 2, 3, 4...

Command and Conquer (Even after Westwood was eaten by EA: Especially Generals: Zero Hour and C&C 3)

Mass Effect 1, 2, 3

Dragon Age 1, 2, Inquisition

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Crysis 1, 2

All great, fun games... all with an EA logo slapped on them. EA doesn't make games. They publish them. It's about the developers, and just because EA absorbed some great developing companies doesn't make them suddenly awful.

So yeah, in my opinion, you're wrong.

They've been making it since Disney bought Star Wars. If they were just rushing out crap and swapping out the skins in Battlefield they could be on the second one by now.

I think EA, or at least DICE, wants to get its first Star Wars game right.

Maxis (SimCity) - Purchased by EA in 1997; shut down in 2015. [Though EA says the "Maxis" brand will live on—and the studio currently behind The Sims continues to use the label—the Emeryville-based development house that served as the main descendant of what Will Wright created back in 1987 is officially no more.]

Mythic (Dark Age of Camelot) - Purchased by EA in 2006; shut down in 2014.

Bullfrog (Syndicate, Dungeon Keeper) - Purchased by EA in 1995; shut down in 2001.

Origin (Ultima, Wing Commander) - Purchased by EA in 1992; shut down in 2004.

Westwood (Command & Conquer) - Purchased by EA in 1998; shut down in 2003.

DreamWorks Interactive/Danger Close/EA Los Angeles (Medal of Honor) - Purchased by EA in 2000; shut down in 2013.

Phenomic (SpellForce, BattleForge) - Purchased by EA in 2006; shut down in 2013.

Black Box Games (Need for Speed, Skate) - Purchased by EA in 2002; shut down in 2013.

Pandemic (The Saboteur) - Purchased by EA in 2008; shut down in 2009.

PlayFish (The Sims Social) - Purchased by EA in 2009; shut down in 2013.

NuFX (NBA Street) - Purchased by EA in 2004; shut down in 2007.

Also I specifically said star wars games from the last decade not games in general.

Pandemic (The Saboteur) - Purchased by EA in 2008; shut down in 2009.

I think you've missed two games Pandemic made that are far better known than whatever The Saboteur is.

Mercenaries 2 and lord of the rings conquest? because i'd not heard of either of those before looking up the relevant info just and even looking at the art work rings no bells.

Everything else was made before EA bought them and yes then they did make some fun games.

After seeing the game play all I can say is if your Imperial don't ever bother using the AT-AT nor the AT-ST. They just make you a big target and you will die easier than you would if you had juststayed on foot. TIE Fighters are the Empires only good vehicle and even then since itappears the X-Wing can be mounted with Ion Weapons, that explode which means it can make clouds of ions probably, the Empire has few advantages if any in this game.

I don't agree. We have got a good handful of SW games this decade.

*Kinect Star Wars. Made it to the Platinum Collection, was one of the few Kinect games to be first on the sales charts, even beating the Witcher. It is the only Kinect game to be 1st on the sales charts in the UK. It only got bad reviews because reviewers reviewing the game ether were paid to give it a bad review or they somehow couldn't understand the simple navigation controls in the game. The game was real.fun and the controls were near perfect. The only time they were wonky.was in 2 player mode. It kept seting me up as a left handed player.

*Star Wars: TFU 1&2 Pretty awesome stories, just like with SOTE you are supposed to get the novels and comics because they add too the gamestory. SWTFU2 comic is al about Boba Fett. The Darkside ending for the 2nd one is also sorta canon because of thevideos unlocked in halllenge mode.

*Star Wars: Batlefront 3 & 4 & 5. Aka SWBF:Renegade Squadron, SWBF:Elite Squadron, SWBF:Moblie Squadron. They easily had thebest gameplay and stories out of all the SWBF games including this SWBF 6 coming out in five months. Its cool, in SWBF4 it is shown that General Kota from Star Wars the Force Unleashed 1&2 is alive and fought at the Battle of Endor. They even used the same voice actor from STFU.

Aliens: Colonial Marines was just an out and out scam.

Bull. That game is one of the best fps ever, its also one of the best stories in the the alien/predator/avp/promethues saga. The story was epic and gearbox/sega stayed true too the lore. Not once did I suffer from game mechanic issues. Some people may have had some but most game news writers and reviewers flat out lied about the game and issues they claimed it had it had. They were paid to lie about ACM and to boost the score for Dead Space 3 since they were competing games coming out at thesame time. It wasn't till "Gamer Gate" that the corruption I am talking about was fully exposed.

Wow....this looks even better than I thought it would. I'm excited.

All this thread needs is another anti-EA whiner to come in and talk about how they will mess it up.

EA will mess it up by giving it a Red, Green, or Blue ending... OH wait they already did that sorry my bad wrong franchise.

Yes, I too can determine from 5 minutes of pre-alpha gameplay that the company that excels in large-scale multiplayer battles is going to make a completely lopsided, unbalanced mess of the whole thing. Astute observation.

that post reeks of satire :P
