Strategy thread: Killing Turrets

By J1mBob, in X-Wing

the problem with proton bombs is 5 bombs for 1 damage, not ideal for chewing through 13 points+ of health

don't rely on crits, you'll need a lot of them especially on a decimator to avoid "-1 agility" or "1 damage after red maneuvers" or munitions failure...

Why not take Engine Upgrade instead? After all, a missed shot, because the target being out of arc, is usually one missed shot too many...

I completely agree. I almost won't run a defender without EU. It transforms it into an agile killing machine that cannot be outmaneuvered or reasoned with. white K followed by a boost is awesome and completely unexpected. It makes it the ship the empire was promised.

funny you should bring up bombs. I have had a lot of success with prox mines, especially with large base ships. if you are running 4 bombers with prox mines, between asteroid placement and your mines, you are calling the shots with respect to your opponents movement. If extra munitions does in fact allow 2 bombs, then consider 2 gold squads with ICT or a warthog setup, each with 2 prox mines. That is a lot of control, and prox mines don't care about 3PO. It's just 3 dice that cannot be cancelled. Now, I admit that this alone is not enough, but if you can lock a pancake down, you can kill it, and you can draw some pretty big lines on the board with asteroids and prox mines to fill in the blank spaces. they help out a lot against all hypermobile ships, but especially large base ones.

It can also make for a nasty block to get ahead of a pancake, then drop a mine. This creates a large no-go area dead ahead. he does not just have to clear the mine, but a range 1, and then the ship that dropped it. It's like a block with hot sauce!

I've always thought an Engine Upgrade on a Defender is a waste of 4 points. Generally a defender wants to get as many range 2 and 3 shots as possible. Boost brings them too close. Not to mention that a Defender almost always wants to focus. As for repositioning, a barrel-roll is superior for the types of movements a Defender wants to do. A k-turn followed by a barrel-roll can allow you to get a shot on any ship that you're trying to chase. Why waste 4 points on an Engine Upgrade?

yeah you don't really want to add more points to what is already a very stat-inefficient and action-inefficient ship

personally never had many issues bringing a Defender in arc. that white 4k is murder, and the roll, if necessary, is often enough.

innate boost would've been fun though!

I've heard of some people giving the Tie Defender the Stealth upgrade. Getting 4 green dice is pretty nice, especially if you Focus each turn.

This is how I run Rexler and won't go without it.

Rexler + HLC+ Stealth Device + Predator = 50 points of Tie Defender greatness.

This is pretty much my thoughts exactly. I think I might take EU only as a meta choice on Rexler Brath if I was expecting a lot of IG-88s and super-Dashes.

What is a "Super Dash"? I thought the YT-2400, when cannon-equipped, has a donut hole that is easy to exploit. What's the difference?

Super Dash does have Outrider and HLC. It's easy to exploit with certain ships, but not all of them. Pilots also matter. It also can be hard if your opponent is trying not to let you get to R1. That's where blocking can help.

Being Corran.

What makes Corran so go against a large turret ship? His two attacks in a round? Agility? Maneuverability? Or I guess a combination of all three.

Corran with a ptl build is virtually immune to any single 3-dice attack unless its Omega Leader. Since turrets cost so much it's usually easy to kill the rest of the list and Corran can just clean them up with double-taps and regen. Kylo crew changes this to an instant-loss for Corran, but otherwise he is the best turret-counter in the game.

This meta isn't great for Corran though. Too much stress. :(

Pray tell, necromancer... Why did you resurrect this nearly two year old thread?

Ask Blairbunke.

He has mastered the art of hunting down PWT ships and Aces with generics.

He's probably just really excited about Runewars, and had to practice his Necromantic arts.

Cause I'm new and learning. Also, the league I'm playing in will allow large base ships starting in our next round. I know I'm going to face some.
