Decisions... Desert Wars or GCC, early 09 tourney attendance : which one... or both? team members???

By dutpotd, in UFS General Discussion

Hey guys,

As the title indicates I need to start making some final decisions. Being a Canadian, and having been to Phoenix once and Lafayette never, I am not entirely sure which locale would be best for me to travel to in order to compete in some of the early 09 regionals.

If economically possible, I will of course, do both. But for the sake of argument/opinion could someone weigh in on which one would be better for me as a fairly new player (started June/July 08, attended Gencon, 3-3-1 record (Lilith), Can Team Nats in Winnipeg, 3rd/4th place(Cammy) ).

I'm also not super-familiar with the location of the close-by venues in these locations... I would like to fly into town, cab it to a hotel/location within walking distance from the weekend events and go from there. Do either of these venues support a nearby hotel/location to stay and sleep? <of course, I will check up on googlemaps and do some work on my own, but any preferences/infromation from local residents would be taken more seriously>

Finally, seeing that I would be travelling it would be best if I could compete in both day's events and heavily, i.e. I need a team. My playgroup up here (6-10 regulars) are all hard-up with work and lack the coin for travel so they are out of the question. Are there any players attending these events that are in need of a teammate for the teams part of the event? If so, please contact me by response to this thread - we can exchange contact info and go from there gui%C3%B1o.gif

Thank you for your help with this, and please weigh in with thoughtful (not too biased) advice.

GO TO BOTH we always love seeing the canadians dont forget about the SCC as well !!

You are right Scuba :)

That said, for starters... I will definately go to Arizona - IF I find 2 teammates (although singles is cool, I would love to compete in both events).

So, the search for a team is on.

Any Canadian's want to team up and fly down? I'm seeing ~ $400 airfare if you leave the Thursday and come back Tuesday morning. = 3 days off work. And it's ~ $550 if you do Friday and Sunday/Monday.

There is a hotel I found close by for ~$50 a night so we are looking at $200 or $150 for that. A bit less is we share accomodation...

You add in the cost of living and other junk and we are looking at $800 for the trip, not a bad cost for a trip to sunny Arizona and some great UFS competition.

Any American's going to be there without teams? Post away, I ain't picky (I am competitive though so do intend to spend a bit of time online with me talking strategy and working on our decks).

YO! I THINK WE PLAYED AT WORLDS AGAINST EACH OUTHERT , I WAS PLAYIN THAT CRAZY CERVANTES THAT PLACED THIRD. I THINK THAT YOU SHOULD DEFENETLY MAKE IT TO THE GCC IN LOUISIANA. IT WOULD BE GREAT AND WE COULD DEFENITLY HOOK YOU UP WITH A TEAM.

Usually what i do to cut the cost is stay with someone in the area who is going to the event I was able to do that for every event except gencon this year.

OtakuV,

Indeed it was me that you played against. Just my luck getting to play that 'sick' Cervantes in my first round at worlds. Congrats on the finish - that deck deserved it! (I still have nightmares about immortality)

I am looking into the logistic details of doing GCC - Layfayette in Louisiana in February (looks like Gravelord has planned for some very fun events that weekend).

I think the best way for me to get there would be a flight into New Orleans, car rental, and short drive west :) I'm still looking into more direct flight routes...

Will have to keep you guys posted in order to let you know for sure what I need for teams and such. Maybe by February 1 or 2 form my playgroup can make it...

Are you Barrett or Garrett? I can't remember the Canadian guy's name who chilled with us Saturday night at Hooters.. he went alone and was a very cool guy to talk to. He ran a mill deck and I believe he used Lilith too.. the combo was using Lilith to recur cards just as Countless Days of Killing and some other stuff.. can't remember it all.

Look into flying into Baton Rouge (BTR) which is 1 hr from Lafayette or Lafayette (LFT) which would take you directly into the hosting city. I'm sure my crew would not have a problem picking you up from LFT and dropping you off there, thus $ave on gas and car rental.

If you were really the guy that we hung out with in Indy, then you may remember me as the vietnamese guy there with my girlfriend.

pheonix is an awesome place! i have family there so i have been a couple times and it is a realy nice city. if you come to the eastcoast i would team up with. i have few means of transportation so i probably won't make it to lafeyete or pheonix.

Thank you for the replies.

Gravelord, I certainly do remember you. It was me that had dinner at Hooters with you, your girflffriend, and the guys and girl from Texas. You were all great Company and I can't wait for another similar adventure! You were **** close with the name too - first name Garett, last name Brett (but you can imagine how often they are mistaken last for first...)

I will look into flying straight to Baton Rouge, thank you for the information and the potential offer :)

I'm really quite excited about the new year of the game, the sets coming out have some of my favorite characters in them and I think things will settle nicely making for some quality events, all definately worthy of my travel money.

Trane: If and when the next big East Coast thing is, watch out for me, I would gladly team up with you if still in need and want at that time.

I'm still very much looking for a team for the Phoenix thing (Desert Wars). So, now that the forums are colliding or so to speak, if some one sees this and wants to team up, let it be heard here and I will surely respond ASAP.

Is this for the GCC you guys are thinking about going too ?

Yeap, seems like dut is an acquaintance made from this year's worlds event. The GCC will have it's 1st Canadian appearance.. hopefully the New Yorkers and the Californians come again. Then we'd have representatives from all the outstretches of North America.. well, not counting Mexico. Anyone know any players from Mexico?

dut, I'll make sure Nick keeps his promise of picking you up should you need it. ^ ^

Nice triple-posting, scuba. XD

Anyhoo, I don't have any team members yet (as all my buds are douches XP) and would very much like to team with someone. And I actually heave were DW is (sunny AZ), so it's not a question of "if I'll be there".

I've never met ANY of you. Should be fun. ^^

That's cool Cena!

If we find one more we have a team for Desert Wars...

Anyone?
