The rise of Captain Oicunn & Echo - "Devilmator...or...or"

By captaincullen, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey everyone

This is a list I have been using for sometime now (close to 4 months). Its won me a Spring Kit game night and a Store Championship and comes up trumps in some situations. Posting here to see what people think.

List Name: "Devilmator...or...or"

“Echo” TIE Phantom - 42 Points (PS8)

Gunner (5)

Fire-Control System (2)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

Captain Oicunn VT-49 Decimator - 58 Points (PS4)

Determination (1)

Darth Vader (3)

Ysanne Isard (4)

Gunner (5)

Counter-Measures (3)

------------------------

Things of note:

Phantom - Echo is pretty straight forward, its pretty stock standard for a Phantom, less the Gunner which maximises the attack opportunity. This also adds to the defensive element for the Phantom. Allowing it to get into close range when it needs to and take an evade action to protect itself. In attacking high priority and high agility targets, even at range 1 it tends to either hit hard or miss. Both of which are desirable - activation of gunner/fcs target lock means its hard hitting. As with most two ship lists, a missed attack from your Alpha striker can spell the end of the match, this combination maximises those opportunities.

Decimator - Darth Vader on the Decimator with a Gunner is a sure fire Soontir killer at the potential cost of 4HP which in reality you are likely to lose to Soontir anyway without Darth on board. Super soontir can be gone in 1 attack round which often pulls the match in your favour. Gunner also allows for any missed opportunities or high agility targets. Matched up with Ysanne Isard and Counter-Measures on defence means it may stick around longer in focus fire situations.

Scenario: Multi ship squad moves into attack Oicunn to focus fire it off the board

Oicunn uses Counter-measures and drops the target lock of the highest threat attacker and for the round picks up an extra agility, at range 3 he will get 2 agility for the round, helping to keep those attacks as low as possible. On top of that any crits that go through have the 1 in 5 chance to get a pilot to discard. This makes the Decimator a lot more tanky than your average.

On the offense, you have the Phantom with its gunner helping to pick off targets, with Oicunn adding Vader crits to either take them out completely or severely cripple for the next round

Twin turrents and Warthog Y's require a lot of skill to see this build through and at this stage have been the most challenging opponents to date.

Any thoughts?

Seems like a powerful list: Phantom + Decimator seemed popular during 2015 store/regionals.

My only query is Oicunn: how often will you get to use his power, especially without Engine Upgrade?

If you drop him down to Patrol Leader, also losing Determination, you'll have 3 points to spend. Perhaps a Rebel Captive for your Phantom, to give Oicunn an open target next turn?

I agree with the above: engine upgrade is much more valuable than counter-measures, especially on Oicunn (also rebel captive is great on decimator!). It will stop more damage by dodging arcs. Trying to tank through enemy shots with only one extra green die is a bit futile, tbh.

Also, Whisper is far better with that loadout than Echo. Having said that, he's 2 points more which is tough because you're already tight on points. Personally, I'd rather run:

Oicunn w/ determination, rebel captive, gunner + engine upgrade = 55

Whisper w/ VI, FCS, gunner & ACD = 44

99

Take the initiative vs anything else at PS9 so that whisper can kill it before it gets to shoot (or at least get her cloak & focus before getting shot back). You may or may not one-shot Fel (Depends on a few factors like luck, range and how many tokens he has when you shoot), but you will likely knock the stealth device off and then can finish him off next time you get him in arc (inevitable if you are good at predicting enemy moves).

Oicunn can take care of anything that gives Whisper a hard time (like other rebel captive decimators----they hate oicunn!)
