Determination Elite Pilot Talent Question

By Muz, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I was just watching a game when i saw Leebo, with Determination, suffer two hits and two crits with 4 hull left. He got to draw a different Critical damage card for each critical suffered and hunted the damage cards with the pilot trait and discarded the damage card suffering only two damage total and surviving the round.

Now my understanding was that you still take the damage but don't suffer the adverse effect of the critical, does anyone know how Determination works?

Determination has you discard any face up card with the pilot trait. If the card is discarded then it has no effect on a ship. Keep in mind that "damage" is just the number of (damage) cards a ship has on it, if one is discarded then the ship has less damage.

Now, with leebo in that situation, it is important to keep in mind that cards are dealt one at a time. When leebo takes multiple crits he draws 2 cards for the first one, picks one of those and applies it (discarding it with determination if it was a pilot crit) then he draws 2 more cards for the second crit and chooses one of those and so on. When taking 2 crits he does NOT get to draw 4 cards and pick the 2 he wants. I couldn't tell from your description if that was an issue here, but it is a common mistake new players make.

No issue, Just trying to figure out how Determination works.

To be honest i have totally misunderstood how it works. I would have taken the damage but not suffered the effect of the crit, i didn't realise you discard any pilot trait Crits without suffering the damage, i can see how Leebo can be appealing.

So with this in mind, is Determination a waste on Chewie as he turns the Crits over before they are resolved or does it get discarded before Chewie takes effect?

Both trigger on being dealt the card, so it's up to you which one would take effect first. If it happens to be a Pilot trait card, then Determination allows you to discard it. If it isn't, Chewie gets to flip it facedown anyway.

Not exactly anti-synergy with Chewie, no. Basically, you're still crit-proof, you just block additional incoming damage. Which is nice, for one point.

Some important points made regarding Determination:

1. With Leebo if you would be dealt one face-up card you get to draw two instead and choose which to apply. Determination can then work on that card. This applies to each face up card that should be drawn individually. If Determined Leebo suffers [crit] [crit] he draws 2 to choose 1, potentially discards it, then draws another 2 to choose 1 and possibly discard that. If he picks up two pilot cards to choose from as the first face-up card Determination will get to discard it but he doesn't get to keep one of them for the next set of face-up cards to choose from and if he gets two ship cards then he will have to pick one and be stuck with it.

2. With Chewbacca you still look at all the face-up damage cards dealt. If you have Determination you can discard the Pilot ones before utilizing Chewie's ability to turn the others face-down.

3. Not mentioned yet but Draw Their Fire and Determination (possible on an A-Wing) generally is not a good combination. This is because you have to use DtF long before you have any idea what the face-up card would be. You can use DtF but you pull a Ship card you will be stuck with it which is a very bad thing for an A-Wing. If only there was some way to set this up on Chewbacca....
