Should there be a second version of auto thrusters to include more ships?

By markcsoul, in X-Wing

I think most people can agree that autothrusters are a great use of 2 points for a modification on a ship.

Unfortunately, it currently can only be used on ships with the boost action, which is only 4 total so far.

When I first heard about this so called "turret help upgrade", I assumed it would be for most if not all ships.

Considering how strong turrets are still, I think there should be a second, cheaper version of it that could be taken for all agility 2-3 ships. This version would remove the range 3 bonus, and only apply to out of arc, so it could be 1 point instead of 2.

This could give a slight boost to xwings, as if they took this mod, they'd be at least even if not stronger defensively than bwings at facing turret lists.

What do you think?

No.

Fel is so freaking annoying to face. How are you supposed to catch him? Either run a lot of ships to cause him to bump, or run a turret with gunner. Arc dodgers are just as annoying, or not more so, than turrets.

I wax about to rejoice in the realization that all of these falcon whining threads have put the kaibosh on all the xwing "fix" threads...but then he had to mention how this would make the xwing better...

Oh yea, a more universal modification that also happens to be cheaper. **** No. Just think how Interceptors would do flying both mods.

If you want Autothrusters be be so universal then why not just add it to errata for everything? Ok, then try making it a more expensive upgrade because it seems many thing Autothrusters are often a bargain for just 2 points.

Autothrusters are highly overrated around here. They're very good for 2 points, but it's no god card.

Ditto...but then fat turrets were never popular in my group...

No. Autothrusters wasn't necessarily a turret fix, but an Interceptor fix. Having seen way to many Fel's one shot at Range 3, it was a necessary upgrade for them. Happy side benefit that it also helps the A-wing.

AT are broken. So no

AT are broken. So no

Out of curiosity...why do you feel they are "broken?"

Btw, good post title. Not at all click-baity. (My pet peeve of late.)

Wha...?

Large Base Turrets are popular in the tournament scene because of the current MoV rules

I will agree that if there was a consistent design philosophy from the outset of the game turrets would look a little differently than they do now, but adding AT to everything is not a good fix from a design or lore standpoint.

Please add AT to Corran lol. Then I can just take him as my list and quit adding all this unnecessary 100-point filler.

In my opininion, Autothrusters has been a bad way to nerf fat turrets. Let´s make an example:

In a turret domined meta, for 23 points I can have a naked Red-Squadron X-wing... or a Green Squadron A-Wing, with PTL, VI chardaan refit and autothrusters. For the same 23 points, although the x-wing has 3 attack dice, the A-Wing is much fore difficult to kill, the same is applicable for ships with no native boost action.

The thing I would have done if I was in the FFG design team, in place of develop Autothrusters, is to make a new rule: "Each time a ship with turret as main weapon (including YT-2400 with title) attacks a small or large ship outside the firing arc, the defender gets 2 extra evade dices" This way turrets pilots will try to put enemies into arc in place of putting "autoplay mode" and go around shooting without worrying about having enemies in arc. This way the game would be more "dogfighting" and it would simulate in a more realistic way the difficulty to hit a small ship which is pursuing a big turreted ship

No. The current crop of turret ships are strong, period. MoV may be a factor, but getting rid of MoV as a tiebreaker will not cause a sudden decrease in those same ships seeing play.

Again, Autothrusters is NOT a turret nerf. It is a way for highly mobile arc dodgers to compete with them losing their main strength. It isn't to weaken turrets, but to strengthen the Interceptor, A-wing, StarViper, and Iggy. Again, you need only see Fel one shot at Range 3 in the first round of egagement to see the necessity of Autothrusters for the Interceptors to see competitive play.

Obviously, it would have to include some rule like "Does not stack with Autothrusters". Or "Not Equipabble by ships with the Boost Action in their action bar".

No, but for different reasons than mentioned above.

No. But we should have something that works against turrets. Like heavy missiles that do even better damage vs them. I wanna see more small ships.

I lol`d at the how do you catch Fel comment. But no, everyone wants thrusters on all their ships and I'm over here like do you not understand they are supposed to make the super evasive ships feel more evasive?? X wings don't have boost for a reason, same deal with bombers, Ys, Bs....they weren't the most maneuverable ships in the galaxy so they didn't get the upgrade. Is it a good card, yes, should every ship be able to take them? Heck no, it takes away from the feel of the game if my bomber can trigger his thrusters to zip out of the way of some lasers with the maneuverability of a squint.

I guess I thought this idea would be more popular. It allows a simple fix to turret dominance for when they shoot you out of arc, as well as being a nice 1 point mod option, as I've heard people say how they wish there were more cheap mod options available.

And I don't want them to stack with normal auto thrusters, and I'm sure any ship with boost would rather have the 2 point version.
