300 Pt Tournament Report

By Cuthawolf, in Star Wars: Armada

Hey hey,

Freshly back from my first tournament and man, it's so much nicer to play with people who aren't locked into a hardcore mindset. I mean, obviously if painstakingly refining your list is what's fun for you, then by all means. But there are limits.

Anyway here's the TL;DR: Three Rebels, Three Imperials. Imperials had the best overall showing; taking 1st, 3rd and 4th place. The first place player I didn't get a chance to square off against, but I know he was running a VSD + GSD with fighter support and that he pretty much swept the board all three games he played.

I was running this:

Neb-B + Raymus Antilles
CR 90B + Overload Pulse + Leia Organa
AF2A + Advanced Projectors + Mon Mothma
Keyan Farlander
B-Wing
Luke Skywalker
X-Wing
Precision Strike, Hyperspace Assault, Superior Positions (Because I'm a dummy).
Longer: I managed to take 2nd place, which surprised me because I had two losses and a bye. But apparently the AMOUNT you lose by makes an impact on your standing, and I never lost more than squadrons and that one corvette. Not sure what I think about the scoring yet. I'm pleased to have taken second, but I feel the third place guy sorta deserved it more with two losses and a win to my two losses and bye.
I think my list was pretty weak? Looking back on it I think I tried to do too much and didn't specialize, leaving me unable to make a real dent in shooting, fighters or objectives. I got absolutely annihilated in the fighter game every time, losing all of my squadrons which is 67 points to my opponent. Learned a lot about how often I should be using the navigate command (WAY more than I was) and playing it "safe" with a corvette vs treating it like it's made of glass (my second game it literally never was in medium range to get a shot off. See dummy comment above.)
My defensive playstyle seems to stand me in pretty decent stead overall, but I would probably not play this list again. The Imperial fighter swarms were so potent that I kinda figure for my local scene I either need to go heavy into fighters myself (think 100pts of X-Wings) or ignore them entirely and trust my anti-fighter batteries to save me.
Two asides:
Number one: My first match was against...I think he was 10? Anyway, very nice little boy playing Imperials. His list wasn't valid (No Commander, more on that later, and 133 points of TIEs) and HOLY **** 133 points of Imperial Fighters is a terrifying thing to see arrayed across from you. He beat me fair and square and I just passed on the list refinements to his dad after the fact, but man, that giant fighter swarm is gonna stay with me a while. I'm kinda dreading the 400 point wave 2 now.
Number Two: Is it just my local scene or does anyone else have to CONSTANTLY remind people they MUST have a Commander? Both of my games today were against Imperial lists with no Commander, and I've had two other games against people who had already played that didn't seem to know they HAVE to have one. I'm curious if this is just located here, or if it's been going around.

I've had to point out the commander thing at least once to a local player who thought it was optional.

Have to say I haven't had any problems with people in our meta not reading the rules. Sorry that happened :( Especially when you are paying to play.

I'm kinda dreading the 400 point wave 2 now.

My mate and I have been playing 400 points wave 1 fleets for a few weeks and it is a blast.

As for aisde two it is just you. :D

My four wave one ships with upgrades and fighters come to over 600 points.

Planning on thousand point fights after wave two!
