Guides to demo?

By ShadowLink0987, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Hello there! I am a longtime lurker of these forums, but have recently found myself in need of some assistance!

I am signed up to be running a demo of imperial assault at a local con, and I'm not quite sure what the best way to go about it would be. For additional information, I have all of the wave one expansions, and the core set.

Currently the main thing I am trying to focus on is whether to run a campaign demo, or a skirmish match demo. With the skirmish both players are able to get right into the meat of combat and action; however with the campaign I can get more players in to experience the game.

Our local scene is also pretty non existent. I am desperate to get some OP going, as I really am looking forward to hopefully obtaining some of the cool things in the tourny kits (acrylic tokens and alt arts). So I am hoping to bring some interest tk the skirmish half of things.

Is there a basic set up for two armies I would be able to make using what I have without the need for the proxies? I feel they detract from gameplay, especially when you are trying to draw in new players.

Also if there are any recomendations for specific campaign or skirmish missions that would be fairly easy to get into for the purposes of a demo, I would greatly appreciate the insight!

I demoed Imperial Assault on Tabletop Day back in April. I ran the first Campaign mission which seemed to go over pretty well. I also used the YouTube video showing the opening crawl as a start.

I also demo'd both at Denver Comic Con. Figure about 30 minutes for each - first mission and skirmish.

I pre-built three 20 point skirmish fleets, one for each faction. It was Luke/Mak, IG88 and something, and the Royal Guard champion and something. One beefy fig and a couple small ones was right where that balance was for great teaching. It was a lot of fun! You don't have to use the cards, depending on how much gaming knowledge the people have you can just give them a small taste of it and explain that there are slightly more complicated rules and leave it at that. They will know if they want to go buy a copy or not. Also - I completely made up the map and there was no mission, just deathmatch with a couple terminals. I pulled all the cards out that were figure specific of the command deck as well, we both just drew off the main deck.

The first mission I demo'd a LOT. I left Mak out, as well as Fenn. Everyone wants to be a wookie or Jedi, and when explaining the roles of the characters it was pretty funny to hear kids yell out with such excitement "OH! MOM! You LOVE bossing people around! You should be the commander!" Now, Naturally I'd also show people how I could win as the imperial player almost immediately, but would then play it out to the death for completion's sake. Most people walked away having a great idea of the game and also having a lot of fun.

It was probably the hardest to tell them that its a $100 game for either mode. I think we sold 5 or 6 base sets over the weekend, which was actually pretty good. Hopefully the store you demo for has a skirmish or campaign casual play night, advertise it with flyers!

Most of all just realize people want a star wars experience with their favorite characters, so definitely have those painted up and on display at the least :)

Awesome! Thanks for the insight guys!

Demo day is happening today! And yeah, there isn't really an easy way to break the news about the high cost of the game. Unfortunately that's just going to have to be saved for last when evrryone has had their fun I guess. I'm thinking I will definitely have some kind of card or print out for adbertising a casual night, both for skirmish and campaign. Really hoping that people get into skirmish in my area. Or even if they would come out at all. Just for a start.

Just as an aside, this demo I will be running is at sask blitz. Just in case anuone here actually is in my area (doubtful, but dunno until I ask I guess... haha), so if you are seeing this, come say hi and see if you can't help build us a community! :)

So? How'd the demo day go? :)

I was demoed this game through the first campaign mission. Folks who have been demoing IA at our FLGS to our X-Wing group have used the first campaign mission as well. For what I've seen, most people are interested in the campaign, as for every 5 or so folks who have picked up the game (who I've seen demo it), 1 or 2 have be interested in Skirmish....that could also be that they all play X-Wing or Armada and are looking for a different format.
