Prepping for a 2v2 tournament

By nikk whyte, in X-Wing

75 points each, unique apply for the whole team, and even ship types are unique (if one guy has tie fighters, the other guy can't)

How would you build out your 75 points? Do you squeeze as much fattie into 75 points as possible, or do you load up on mid range fighters to eat the fatties alive?

One list building aspect that is incredibly interesting, is that the format pretty much completely neuters dual aggressors. You ca get 2 of them, but they'll only have 3 points of upgrades between the two of them.

Do you know who you're paired with? That makes a BIG difference because otherwise how do you prepare a squadron to get matched up with some other random person when you can't even share a ship class much less have overlapping unique upgrades?

What you really want is a 150 point squadron that is divided into two 75 point halves which share no ship classes between the halves.

The less ships the better. Unless you have a really good planned strategy or stick to opposite sides of the map you will be runnign into each other.

We can make our own pairings prior to the tourney, and anyone without a pair will be matched and receive a little time to hammer out a list.

So you can have two people come in having prepared their squadrons to work together in perfect harmony and practiced together fighting two people who have been thrown together at the last minute and are being told to "make it work!"? Sounds like a really fair tournament.

Stupid follow up question: Do both partners on a side have to share the same faction? Can I fly my 75 points of Rebels alongside my friends 75 points of Imperials and then go against a pair that is fly Rebel/Scum?

And that is why I don't think I would enjoy this format.

One guy has 5 m3a interceptors with 5 pts remaining, the other has 6 z95 with 3 pts remaining?

Or 5 Awings 6 z95, with the z95s having 3 points still

Yes, you must match your partners faction

And yeah, it's fair because as humans beings we have the ability to communicate to another human "hey I'm gonna take Rexler, put fleet officer on a shuttle."

Whereas I assume you play the game with a complicated set of grunts and gestures.

When I'm talking about "fair" I'm talking in large part about two players building highly complementary halves to fight against two people who may have squadrons that fly very differently and have a hard time supporting each other.

I could point out the good old "dominant player" issue here where the concept of 2x2 turns into 1+ vs 2 where the purpose of the + is just to help move ships around. Nothing really wrong with have "team tournaments" with some kind of squad building rules making it look like two groups but it's best to just come out and say that.

Asking what to build for half a team when you have no idea what the other half of your team would look like and what ships/upgrades you'd both want to use is a recipe for problems.

With your request for a 75 points squadron to use as part of a 2x2 tournament to make the most sense I'd suggest dropping those "can't use the same ship or unique upgrade on both sides of a team" and just go with a 75 point squad that would be places with a different players 75 point squad to make up your "team" for a round. After a round is over everyone has to change team mates so you aren't playing with the same person the entire tournament. Now I'm not entirely sure how scoring such a tournament would work when it comes to figuring MoV but you'd win and lose as a team.

What size board are you playing on? Upgrades like Dash (ship or crew), advanced sensors, or people with collision mods like Oicunn are gonna be more useful than normal if the board isn't much bigger. Those, and pilots with abilities that thrive in a range 1 environment will help, here's looking at you Mara Jade...

On the flip side, I would imagine stuff like Lone Wolf or a Kir Kanos will be really worthless

I'll also add, Xizor might be REALLY fun if you have 1 guy deck him out and then run something like either Guri or as many M1A's, then your teammate has a ton of z-95s

Again, you are allowed to communicate with other human beings. It's really not that hard to slam together 75 points of list that works another 75. It's not like random pairings and go, it's hi, welcome to the tournament, you'll be paired with person, figure out your list and get it back to me in the next half hour.

People complain that the 100 point deathwatch is getting stale, then spazz when you break out a new format. It's really not a difficult concept to get around.
