Serious question here: what sequence of events led to you posting in this thread and dragging it up from a year ago?
Why do I ask? Because whenever posts up to over a year old get necroed it's always a new member that's done it. I'm starting to wonder if it's somehow easier for new members to do or something.
I'm guessing it was a sequence of events that had something to do with Jumpmasters
I don't find it bewildering that people who love the game want to discuss it with other players, even when there isn't really anything "new" to discuss. That's the nature of fandom - we like something, and when we can't get "more" of it, we generate a kind of more by talking about it with other fans. No bad there.
My observation (for that is what my post amounts to) was only that there is a danger to the game's growth (health?) when well meaning fans pepper a forum like this with a multitude of "fix", "broken" posts. It doesn't paint the picture of a game that is fun to play, balanced and well maintained - rather it suggests that the game is falling apart at the seams. I know the game isn't - so this fix ation (pun intended) in the current meta strikes me as not simply conversational, but perhaps a little detrimental as well.
I agree with you whole heartedly.

It is the nature of the internet... do not let it bother you. X-WING is one of the most popular games of all time, and it will be around for a long-good-time.

The point is that, while it may not bother him, the strong negative streak on these forum may be driving away new players. In fact, right now, there are 2 members and 2 guest reading this thread. What if these guests are potential players who, after reading the wrong thread, decide a less "broken" game might be a good idea.
For example, the first responding post in the "How many TIE/sf should I buy" is "Zero. They are DOA." Snarky, useless, and not good for the health of the game.
And in truth, I am here for fun. Wading through a sea of **** is not fun.
I think the game is awesome. Some however feel the need to balance everything as close as possible for tournament play.
For example, in a 300 point Epic game bombers and ordnance are not so bad. Actually sometimes it forces the defender to play with that in mind. In a 100 point tournament it isn't so popular. Should a freighter be as awesome as an equal number of assault fighters. Well if you want everything balanced for a 100 point death match then yes. But I think doing that hurts the game not help it. There can be ships that are for scenarios, Epic battles and some just for dog fighting.
The game is still awesome and a ship that is a couple of points off does not hurt casual play too often.
Huzzah.
hypothetically speaking
if you're scared away from a game just by what people say on its forums, then yes you shouldn't invest in it since you probably were not that interested in it to begin with
What a beautiful thing to say.
I am also especially proud of the poster whose sig is a link to a different forum where other players discuss what a complete **** he is to play with.
I am only in this game for fun, but I have to admit that I would never want to go to a tournament after reading these boards, for fear of actually meeting some of you people in person.
The negativism is bad for the game, bad for the internet, and bad for the societal mores in general.

Difference between immaculately balanced games like GO and pretty balanced games like X-wing is hoards of overstatement. Broken games get abandoned pretty quick.
To be quite honest, this forum is really bad for calling ships "overpowered" or "unplayable"
I try to ignore it but my goodness its bad. If you have a ship that someone decides is over costed by .5 of a point this forum will start spewing how unviable that ship is. when in reality its just fine.
Long story short, dont listen to these forums about what ships are bad. play with the ships and deicde for yourself what ships play well for you because this forum is often very wrong about its ideas on what is good and what is bad. Lastly everyone studies these ships in a vacuum and decides there value when really that an awful way to look at things.
Take the M3a scyk everyone says it sucks, i love it. Have one several games just running that ship. have one tournaments with it in my list. its the cheapest way to get mangler cannon damage on the field, if your fleet is built so that its not the ideal target it is extremely efficient at what it does. But there are lots of people who will never play with it and learn how to fly it because they read the crap that is posted on this site.
Advanced Tie pre title fix was unplayable.
They Syck is almost unplayable.
Obviously you CAN play the Syck but without special circumstances (Epic scenarios 150 to 200 point lists) and perfect dice rolls its pointless.

I've had one of my best tournament performances with a list that had two PS 2 generic Sycks in it, making the cut and placing top 4. They're overcosted for sure, but not unplayable or pointless in my experience. They Syck is almost unplayable.

If your opponent don't attack them, they are just perfect.
A lot of games will feel "broken" due to cheese dicks who fly the meta builds to win. It's like the friend who always picked Oddjob in Goldeneye. Some people only have fun when they're winning. If you avoid tournys, most of what's wrong with X-Wing is barely noticeable.
Only thing broken in X-WIng is smug attitude of people like this quoted jerk.

Someone was salty enough to necro post on this thread.
He must have googled "is x wing broken" and then joined the forums just to make that post.
On the brightside, the fact that the google result has no threads in the last year is a good sign lol
Whatever..... I go to my LGS every week and get to fly ships from a universe I have loved for decades with others who share that love. I have, as many of us have lots of lists. Sometimes I'm the dog and sometimes I'm the hydrant. Been in a few tournies with good and bad results and ran a kick-ass fun ladder league meeting new X-Wing enthusiasts.
Each week just before we all start our games I blast either the Star Wars theme or the Imperial March just to eff with the Magic players...
I'M FLYING FU%$&*NG STAR WARS SHIPS!!!!!!!
It's all PEW PEW and Stay on Target!
The rest is bullshite...

X-wing is not 40k, balance differences are much smaller. They exist however, that much is undisputable IMO.
When you play a ship that's overcosted (like the Scyk) you're starting every game at a slight disadvantage. Some times you will be able to dig yourself out by playing better than your opponent, being luckier etc. but other times all these factors will not be in your favor and you will need your list to pull it's weight. In this circumstances bad ships cost you games.
Scyks are pointless to play if your goal is to win IMO because including sub-par ships actually decreases your chance to win games. If your goal is something else, then of course they are not pointless.
I'm just waiting for our saviour Jimbonx to be picked up by FFG so he can "fix their broken game". Then we can all breathe a sigh of relief...
Not every ship is playable at the top tier or the World Championship. Some ships probably are, but the majority of people don't think so. There are some combos that are proven to be powerful and get overplayed.
Those people that like to play in competitive events want to have some of their favorite ships be listed in the bracket of competitive. They want fixes.
If you don't play in tournaments or against tournament lists, then it's usually not a problem.
Everyone on the forums should be taken with a grain of salt, including me.
I think on the casual level the game is absolutely fine, its when you get into the meta and people build game breaking combo lists is where the game goes wrong.
It doesn't seem like fun to have to fly against squads of TLT y-wings and U boats. Palpy aces I am not so sure about as they seem to need a fair amount of skill.

It's fun when you bring lists that can stand up to them. If it wasn't fun, would so many people go to tournaments?
What's usually not fun us putting a casual list against a competitive one.

Because new members feel like it's more disrespectful to create a new thread when a perfectly applicable already exists.
Also, they're more likely to be reading old posts and trying to "catch up" on things than veteran players.

Also because a thread subject of "Eff Cheese-**** Net-Listers" probably would not have lasted long to get a good response like bumping this one back up.
Wow, someone necro'd my old post.
I don't know if I should feel honored or appalled.

Neither. It's just good keep a similar topic in a single thread.
