I made a dice roller

By Cenix, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

"But why?" You may ask, well because I could :)

But also after starting playing a PbP game I found the build in dice roller on the website we played on to be just to **** cryptic so I made my own. And it was just too much **** nerdy fun doing it :D

It cancels out opposing dice and displays the roll and result. Also makes a copy/paste blob for pasting into boards using bbCode or rpol.net's ruBB code.

Feel free to take a look and use it:

Just had a look and It seems pretty good

Great roller!

Sorry for my 0 Ranks on Computers but XD is it downloadable or can be used offline?

Take care and thanks!

Sorry, it's online only. I'll let it be up to FFG's own mobile app to provide the offline feature :)

When a triumph is shown, does that include the automatic success in the results? What about despair and failure? That part always confuses me when switching between various dice rollers.

Triumph count as additional Success and Despair count as additional Failure.

Specifically for your roller, would the user have to double check the original results to see if the success part of the triumph or the failure part of the despair was canceled out if they are only seeing the triumph or despair symbol?

Also, this is a very neat tool. Thank you for sharing it.

Thanks for sharing! Always fun to see another open-source SWRPG tool. Hope you're enjoying Ruby on Rails! =)

Swanky!

I like Orokos for its roll-recording capabilities, but this waaaaay easier to use.

Thanks a lot for posting!

Edit: Wondering if there's also a way to see which dice the itemized results came from? That's what's nice about rolling the tactile dice, is that you can see the Boost die from your ally's assistance gave you an Advantage, so it helps give you ideas for narration.

Well I guess instead of posting the dice rolled in text I could throw in the images of the dice faces instead, or maybe both... delete as needed :)

Definitely a nice improvement over the dice roller I built a while ago, heheh. Mine just handles the cancellations, but doesn't provide a pretty results list of symbols.

Only one issue…

You have two columns of dice. In the first column, you have Ability, Difficulty, and Boost dice (well, and Force dice, too). In the second column you have Proficiency, Challenge, and Setback dice. It seems to me you could put all the positive dice in one column and the negative dice in the other.

Outside of that, it looks great!

Very cool!

I note that the graphics represent the shape of the face of each die, so ability (green) and difficulty (purple) each get triangular shapes, even though the dice themselves are diamond-shaped, and that’s the way they are typically represented when using graphics characters in prose. For example:

Screen%20Shot%202015-06-12%20at%2012.31.

As compared to:

dice-chart.png

Is that intentional? Is that something you wanted to fix?

Well I hadn't thought about hoe the dice are presented in text actually, but it is intentional. The shapes I've used are actually the shapes of the dice faces. :) Like the d8 consists of 8 triangular faces and the d12 has pentagonal faces.

My intent was to display the dice in the order of building the dice pool. At least in my experience it's ability then upgrade with proficiency, add the difficulty upgrade with challenge, finally add you boosts and setbacks...

But I see your point. :)

Oh enjoying it very much indeed :)

I took inspiration for my "About" page from your SWSheets.com, thank you too ;)

I'd use SWsheets if it wasn't because I've made my own character generator in RoR as well ;) Though that one I will not share as it is a full generator with everything in it and FFG might not like that

I just wanted to make sure that you understood that this was a break with how things have been presented in the past, and that this might be confusing for some people.

So long as this is an intentional choice, I don’t see a problem here.

Thanks!

Uh, are there parts you could share?

In the result I show successes from triumphs as success icons and likewise with despairs and failures. I'm not sure if it complicates things or it is alright. Maybe I should write a little helper text explaining the results.

I just deployed an update.

It now shows the rolled result and the calculated result in text, as well as a little text that despairs and successes are added to successes and failures.

I don't see it as a break. Orokos roller does the same thing...in my experience, it's standard fare on any graphical die roller to only display the face of the die unless you're going for a 3-D rendering.

If anyone's still using my dice roller, then I've just made an update that show a log of your recent rolls :)

Habe you seen the work by skyjedi? Just so your not reinventing the wheel...

There's a plethora of dice rollers out there, so it's hard not to. But that's not the point of if. I'm doing it for the fun of... well, doing it. And if someone find af use for it, and apparently there are, then great! :D

Works great, still! Nice work @Cenix!
