Should I buy this game? Some game mechanic questions

By megagribix, in Chaos in the Old World

I'm considering buying this game and have read reviews but want to get a better idea of game mechanics. Basically the gaming group I play with like combat/a good tussle/strategy. Games like Axis and Allies, Risk, Risk 2210, Puerto Rico and Settlers of Catan have dominated our play time.

So I just have some basic questions but feel free to elaborate as much as you like! :)

How much combat/fighting is involved?

How strategic would you say this game is?

If there is a clear game leader, is it possible to attack this player and bring them back to the pack whilst still advancing your own cause?

I think that is a good mix of games to like this one as well. It is area control like Risk with simple combat likeit as well. It has variable powers (though thise powers are permanent) similar to Puerto Rico. i think it is a good blend for those that ike ameritrash and eurogames.

Combat: Khorne is the blood god and one of 4 players in this game. His goal is to conquer through combat so he will do a lot of it. The rest will do it as defense and a few key areas. So if you have one player that really likes combat, they will always want to be Khorne. The others are more sneaky and indirect in their domination and corruption of the land.

Strategy: tons of it. Each player has clear goals that benfit him directly. But those areas overlap and so you must figure out how to best the others in those areas. There are also options to upgrade during play. You have 5 choice but can only ever get 3 upgrade cards. So you can craft your upgrades tot eh particular strategy you want to try out.

Runaway leader: Not only can you directly influence them while helping yourself, there are different victory paths. So you may see someone running away with the score, but you manage to advance your victory dial (a different win condition path) to the auto-victory before they hit the winning points. Or, you need the game to be over more quickly to benfit yourself, so you ruin the 5th region (yet another victory patch) to end the game early and tally current points. Plus, Khrone's ability is to kill figures. If he kills your figure though, it helps him and usually stope what you were trying to accomplish. The others have cards that stop battles, move figures, and otehr nice perks so you use these to help yourself, and you ultimately hurt someone else.

This is the best game of the year and quite possibly the best 4-player game. I highly recommend it and think based on your play group, you will like it. The only drawback is that it plays best with 4 and is good with 3. There are no 2-player variants yet. So that may be a limitation to you.

the game is very stratigic as far as that , combat can be avoided for a while (Nugle doesnt really like it) but you can come up with stratigies that arent "normal" for the god you are playing as. I picked it up and its an enjoyable game that doesnt last long , 4 players get 7 old world cards and if that runs out then all gods lose , 2-3 players get 8 cards so there is a clock on it but thats part of the fun. Plus your "deck" contains cards to help you but each reagion can only contain 2 cards so you have to make some good choices. Anyway I think its a great pickup game that hopefully will see some additions in the future gran_risa.gif

Yes. It's an awesome game that my friends and I haven't tired of yet.

Combat is heavily involved, and even aside from Khorne can come heavily into play.

The game is very strategic. A fair amount of luck is involved in battle dice and card draws, but good tactics will definitely pay off. In fact, I'd place it as way more strategic than Risk, possibly a little less strategic than Puerto Rico.

It is possible to bring back a game leader, especially if the losing power cooperates. Usually by the point a leader is clear the game will end in one or two turns (under a half hour), so there's very little waiting for the inevitable.

i think ill give this one a try. aplauso.gif
