Vassal. It's a great place to play, but...

By KineticOperator, in X-Wing

Pfft, I will continue to use the real tokens! I find it MUCH easier to drag a token to the side of the board than to toggle through all of the actions. Especially if it's a F+E, and then I have to do it twice. I'll toggle on the ion and crit (and stress on Tycho) on the ship, but I also put the ion token out. I find it much easier to see the token than the craft status.

But taking 2 Focus + 1 Evade on Soontir is such a pain on the base, and feels faster to drop and pull tokens. Stress tokens, crit markers, and the "has TL icon", though, way easier to use the ship base, especially since it stacks stress and crits easily.

The main problem I have with the actual tokens, is that they need to be moved around constantly when there's a furball and it can get tricky to remember which ship had which token.

That, and, from my experience, it takes longer for people to use the tokens than to use the actions on the ship.

With most ships, I can hit Ctrl+Shift+3 for a 3-turn-left, then Ctrl+A for a focus. Done.

For Fel? Alt+2 for 2-bank-right, Ctrl+1 for boost left, Ctrl+A x 3 for Evade, Shift+S for stress, and Shift+A for focus.

Sure, at first it'll be a little slower than dragging stuff around, but once you get used to using the ship actions, they are much faster than tokens, even for Fel. It's like typing with more than 2 fingers: takes a while to get the hang of it, but much more efficient in the long run.

It's also annoying that hitting "clear actions" doesn't get rid of them. Have to wait for my opponent to remove every token manually...

I like the idea of vassal but will never play it until there is a self contained installer that I can be up and running after a double click to install. Too many files with random names and versions and none of the outdated versions are removed from the download page. Ain't nobody got time fo dat.

There's an installer for VASSAL. Then you just need to point it at the X-Wing module.

It's like installing Word and then opening a .doc file.

But hey, your loss mate!

Wow. It's really not very hard. Just grab the newest one which is clearly marked as the newest one.

What do you expect from an application that is used for multiple games? Vassal's an engine, not a game in itself.

It also depends on how much you enjoy using and remembering Hotkeys. I use so many different programs with different configurations that I can't waste that kind of brain space on each program's Hotkeys. Brute forcing with right click does make me feel like I'm an old man just learning how to use computers, haha. Not that I don't use some, like for single actions, stress, fwd movement. The easy ones.

I have a gaming mouse (and keyboard, but for vassal the mouse alone has been enough) that lets me record macros and hot keys. It was simple to create a profile for Vassal X wing so I don't have to remember the hot keys on the fly.

If when playing me, there is a long pause in between me revealing my first dial and activating my first maneuver, it's because I forgot to set the profile before the game.

Because I knew someone down the line would say this one day, I made this 3rd entry of my installing & playing guide to Vassal X-Wing:

Which module files are the ones I need?

  • Star_Wars_X-Wing_Miniatures_Game-5.3.0.vmod

That's it. Really. That's the only mandatory file. It contains a few 3x3 starfield maps (classic, light and deep), a teal nebula map (formerly known as blue nebula) and then a bunch of standard black maps (3x3, 4x4, 5x5, 3x6 and 6x3). It contains all ships, pilots, upgrades, tokens, dials currently released in its counterpart tabletop game, and then some, as previews from FFG filter out information to us. Vassal is a great way to try out some of the unreleased, but spoiled stuff from the game.

If you want more variety for the maps, there will be a new unified map pack carrying its own version number: Universal_Map_Pack_1.0.vmdx

I make a point of updating that section the second I release the newest version of the module.

addendum: I've tried to delete very old versions of the x-wing module from the download page in the past, but the administrators of the vassal engine have brought them back. It's in their philosophy to keep every single version of every module accessible. I decided not to fight them. I can understand the rationale if you have old replays you'd want to rewatch and would want to download the corresponding module version for it.

People, as a RULE, don't read any of these warnings.

Then they should be shot and banned from Vassal for 1d20 days... but maybe I err on the side of information overload.

There are no d20s in X-Wing. Maybe roll four attack dice and ban player for each hit or crit rolled?

No, but then again, there are no X-Wings in Vassal either... except for Mu0n! As we are already in meta-gaming, I Gygaxed the situation and acted accordingly. Would you rather the absurd d100 or worse?

Percentile Dice or bust.

I think he's refering to people who haven't respawned their ships in the transition from 5.2.3 to 5.3.0.

It's only the ship bases you have to respawn, right?

Yes.

I think he's refering to people who haven't respawned their ships in the transition from 5.2.3 to 5.3.0. The consequence: those ships won't have access to the automatic placement of the collision aide. It's an annoyance to the player who has to fish out the right template, displace it, rotate it and it's annoyance to KineticOperator while he waits until this is all done, every time a ship collides. :PEvery time I release a new module, I explain how the changes affect your squad files.
