Zann Consortium: Scum in Armada

By Darth Ruin, in Star Wars: Armada

Scum is half the reason I'm giving X-Wing a break, and I don't think I'm alone with this. Frankly there are more Imperial and Rebel aligned ships I would rather see depicted than anything from the Zann Consortium. As soon as scum enters the picture, now FFG is diverting open expansion slots to those ships instead of giving us more Imperial and rebel craft. If it's like X-Wing, there goes Half the wave to ships some of us don't care about, and can't use for our established factions.

Then we end up with something like the TIE Punisher, an undesirable dud that is the only Imperial offering for that wave, and now there's a half a year wait until another ship is offered. What if the following wave is a dud too?

Only the scum fans are going to be happy when Scum ships are released, but I'm not a scum fan. We don't need a third faction this early, if ever, for the game in my opinion. I can believe in bounty hunter ships but not bounty hunter fleets.

And for me its the opposite. I was bored with X-Wing, and Scum helped to reinvigorate it, not only for me but for my local community, which came back stronger than ever thanks to the diversity scum offered. They really are a fresh of breath air and are not limited by preexesting conditions like Howlrunner and Wedge (or is it Biggs?). Far less mirror matches also.

The Punisher is there because they wanted a Tie that was also a bomber, but not a Tie Bomber. Of course the Punisher and K-Wing should also show that Scum was a good idea as the Rebels and Empire have already hit the bottom of the barrel. There will likely be one more wave in the same vein of 2S / 1E / 1R, and then Scum will have the same number of ships. Afterwards future waves will likely be 1/1/1.

And if you ask me, every Rebel ship is a wasted slot for an Empire of Scum ship we could have got :D .

Armada will probably see a 3rd faction eventually. And releases will likely also slow as well. But both of these will keep the game healthier long term.

I didn't think Armada would have Scum as a faction until I remembered Forces of Corruption and its entire faction of Scum capital ships.

Design wise they're pretty uninspired and blocky, but what are the odds we'll see a third faction of all Zann Consortium ships?

Zann Consortium Wave ???

Aggressor Class Star Destroyer - Large Base (Anti-ship long range railgun equivalent)

Keldabe-class Battleship - Large Base (Imperial-Class equivalent)

Venator Class Star Destroyer - Medium Base

Vengeance Class Frigate - Medium Base (Cloaked Close-Range Firepower)

Interceptor Class Frigate - Small Base (Antiship Fighter)

Crusader Class Corvette - Small Base

Fighter Squadrons

Starviper

Scyk

Kiraxz

Uglies

Bounty Hunter vessels

Gameplay wise the Zann Consortium had a lot of mass-driver powered weapons which ignored shielding, and their capitals

had some serious if inaccurate anti-capital ship weapons (think MAC cannons from Halo in Star Wars.)

Not to mention the potential for a 'Most Wanted' pack featuring bases and cards for Zann Consortium Rebel and Imperial ships, with obligatory repaint and cards (not to mention illicit upgrades).

Well, then I shall choose the nuclear option...

I would rather see the Vong, and their turd ships, before the Zaan consortium.

Guys! I found the troll!

I think Vong would be an interesting addition to the FFG range, as much as it pains me to admit it.

I know no one likes them much (self included) but they could have a real impact on the Armada meta both aesthetically and

gameplay wise if implemented well enough. The Vong invasion was a huge watershed for the EU, both in-game and for the fandom.

I'm not too familiar with the abilities of their larger ships aside from black hole manipulation, though.

The big issue is which capabilities do you use? There were at least three different descriptions of the capabilities of their plasma weapons alone.

In the first book the plasma weapons did very little damage to shields and were only dangerous against ships of similar size if the Dovin Basals (AKA their gravity manipulators and mini black hole shield projectors) had ripped the shields down.

In some later books they were basically treated as just a normal weapon with no special effects on shields or hull.

In some other books the plasma bolts would grip their targets and keep doing damage until they burned through the hull and shields.

Joking aside, as someone with only a very passing familiarity with the EU, the real reason the Vong are not going to appear is that they are likely to be "obsoleted" by Episode 7 and the new chronology moving forward.

If we are going to have a new faction for Armada, short of something like the Hutts, it's probably coming out of future episodes.
