Barrel Roll Completion Question

By Yodaopie, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Had this come up the other day, I am pretty sure we played it correctly but I wanted to check, I declared a barrel roll to the right, when I attempted to complete the barrel roll from the front of my ship it did not fit, I went to take a different action and my opponent pointed out that he thought I could fit if I moved the template to the back of the ship, he was correct I fit and wound up taking that as my action. While it wasn't where I wanted to be technically he was correct in that I had declared that action and as such it was my chosen action.

Just wanted to be sure we played it correctly.

Per the tournament rules, yes that's the right way. If you say barrel roll right, you have to go right, even if it means sliding the template to one end or the other to fit.

This is different if you are doing a barrel roll/decloak/ect... and are using a bank template, like with Echo, you would say Right Forward, but you can't fit you don't have to turn the template blackwards.

It's also different if you're not playing by tournament rules.

Is this a rule that would really be different non-tournament? Its similar to putting the template down for a barrel roll and then picking it back up and changing your mind before you really aligned it. Technically, you have to attempt the barrel roll per the rules, but in a friendly game your opponent could say no big deal. Same situation in my mind.

In standard rules you are allowed to pre measure and then decide not to do it and then do another action instead. Only in Tournament Rules are you committed to an action once declared, if you can fit.

Yeah that's why I said what I did, because while most people tend to play by the tournament rules, not everyone does, and not everyone even understands the difference between standard and tournament.

Clearly the OP was playing by tournament rules, even if they didn't know it.
