build for new (young) players

By churchwarden, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So.... Looking to make a list for my boys to run. They are young but love playing, so looking for something without too many special rules to forget. They have access to a b wing, x wing, a wing, and z 95.... Any suggestions? Pilots and such....

Would prefer to not use ten numb or Jake Farrell pilot, but all other pilots are available.

using strictly upgrade from the core and those expansions, see what you think of this

My kid is too young to play but I can't wait for him to get older so I can play games like this with him! This list uses only ships and upgrades from Core, Xwing, Bwing, Awing, Z95:

Luke Skywalker (33)

- R2-D2

- Determination

Blue Squadron Pilot (24)

- Fire Control System

Green Squadron Pilot (22)

- Push the Limit

Lieutenant Blount (21)

- Ion Pulse Missiles

- Deadeye

Total: 100

It has a variety of squads for all factions, and each has a "difficulty" associated with it. So, start with the easy stuff that you have ships for. :) Squads that don't have optional House Rules are generally the more "effective" ones.

Looking over that whole thing... i had no idea i could ram down people's throats like that with Oicunn... Thank you.

That particular squad is more of a proof-of-concept in game mechanics than being something you would actually want to bring to a highly competitive tournament, only having 2 TIEs and a VT-49, but it's still fun.

I know that Decimator Tie interceptor has been doing pretty good which made me think of a play on that to a degree. Something like this i had also posted something in a different Post about a Yorr with this setup decimator titled "Yorr Stressing me out man" because puns...

I have 1 b wing pack, 1 a wing, rebel aces, e wing, z 95, and the core set..... Now.... I think I need to make 2 lists for them to play against each other.

If they are that young why not use only academy pilots and rookie pilots?

They are 7 and 10 and understand the game and can play it quite well. But since it's new I think it's probably best to keep it simple for now.

My 6 year old nephew uses Lando, Ten and a Dagger Squadron pilot, no upgrades. He does quite well with it. I think trying to learn pilot abilities is hard enough for him. I told him as soon as he learns them he can use upgrades.

Considering these are younglings, playing together...

I assume you don't need the lists to be powerful: many net-lists are designed to compete at stores. You also may not need the lists to be ultra-balanced in relation to each other.

I would second the suggestion that you play a couple of games with generic, unnamed pilots, I.e. no pilot skills. Don't take any upgrades yet either.

Then let the padawans choose what cards they want to use, so long as they add up to 100 points. Competitive kids may choose big damage weapons. Star Wars kids may choose their favourite characters from the movies. The point is, it's THEIR cool list.

I played a demo game with a small child the other week. We just split a starter box: He took Luke, I took two Academy TIEs. Afterwards he went through the box and asked if he could use R2-D2 next time. Awesome.

Have fun playing with those guys!
