400pt Tournaments after Wave 2: Is there enough fighter support?

By Naboobo2000, in Star Wars: Armada

Will 125pts be enough for a 400pt fleet? The ratio remains the same but with the epic size of the ships, do we loose the feeling of fighters that will be along for the ride? I would suggest that with a 400pt Tournament that we could have an extra 25pts up to 150 total. I think that opens the door for more fleet options to watch out for.

What do you think?

Naboobo2000

FAQ lists 133 points for fighters. I bought two packs for 4 of everything and allow me lots of builds.

obviously you wont be able to have *everything* on the table at once. With the Calamari prob around 100 pts and the ISD around 110-120, you'll be lucky to field 2 at a time.

ISD + upgrades + fleet admiral 180 pts

VSD + upgrades 95 pts

leaves you 125 for fighters.

Yes.

I dunno 133pts buys you 14 Tie bombers or 13 Y-wings...

I think Squadrons are still going to be a very important consideration.

Since it's actually 133 points, the difference between that and 150 is at most two squadrons, and likely only one. While a single squadron could certainly make the difference in a battle, so could the shipboard upgrades or initiative bid you might otherwise have spent those points on, and that extra squadron probably won't change the feel of the game overall since your squadron complement is probably in the double-digits anyway.

I don't think we need to worry about squadrons losing effectiveness in larger games. If anything, they will probably become more popular for a number of reasons:

- Large ships will have a greater footprint and be even more likely to overlap squadrons when they maneuver.

- Large ships will be able to make fewer attacks than an equal point value of small or medium ships, and their larger battery armaments means these attacks are more likely to be directed at other ships.

- Ships and upgrades that support squadrons can be included for a smaller proportion of your total fleet.

- Squadrons offer a very cost-efficient source of damage to deal with tougher targets.

- New options released in Wave 2 will offer different ways to use squadrons in your fleet.

I plan on adding 15-30 points more in my squadrons for wave 2. Should be enough. I'd actually consider not even expanding squadrons much if you already have ~100 in squadrons depending on ships you're adding/upgrades. This coming from someone who advocates squadrons like no other atm. Then again, I'm adding a Raider to my list, and it's supposed to be a god at anti-squadron dice, so the points I invest there would be partially applicable to squadron battles as well.

Use intercepters to lock up a group of fighters, then have the raider come in and angle itself to hit all of them/many of them twice. Interceptor dies, but with the counter + aa fire, its a valid strategy.

At 133 points you can bring 10 squads of X-Wings. So yes, there's enough fighter support.

or 9 x-wings and wedge (who is still an swing but better).

or not...cuz I'm bad at math... Wedge is 19 not 16....

400 does mean the death of No Squadron builds though I feel. All-Ship builds rely on being able to kill the enemy's capitals swiftly but at 400 points it's unlikely you'll be able to do that given the 6 turn limit.

To be honest depending on the Rouge and Villains pack you may see lists without squadrons all together.

To be honest depending on the Rouge and Villains pack you may see lists without squadrons all together.

those are squadrons, though

even if they're only one ship, they are still classified as such i.t.o gameplay

Has the official amount been set in numbers? Because I just checked the FAQ and it says "One third, rounded up", which I always took as 134 points, not 133. I know it's a fiddly distinction, but one more point is the difference between Y-wings and A-wings.

Wonder if its possible to add a Carrier Ship that allows a set number of points for more Fighters.

instead of battery armaments, the rebel transport just comes with 2 x-wings :P
