mennonite build - the Abe

By churchwarden, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I really like e wings, and especially etahn. I think corran is overplayed. So I'm thinking of a good 3 ship build -

Etahn abaht - fcs, ptl, r2d2,

Ten numb - vi

Jake farrall - ptl, vi, refit, title.

Thoughts? I think Etahn will b my late gamer. With r2d2 he should be able to replenish some shields.

Jake is pilot skill 9, numb is 10.... Should be decent for arc dodging. Etahn can turn one of tens hits to a crit, and that crit can't be cancelled.

Thoughts?

Comes to 99 pts.....

If you go with push the limit, you really should try out advanced sensors. Makes manoeuvring so much easier when you have a green on the dial and use advanced sensors, push the limit then reveal the green to clear the stress. Its also handy for avoiding asteroids, bumps and k-turning. And a pre-dial barrel roll makes your ship much less predictible---being able to throw a surprise late-game move can be a game-changer.

I was debating that..... Probably best too, since I found with Etahn sometimes I have to change my target to maximize his ability for others...... Good point.. I have the point to spend on it too. Although.... Accuracy corrector on Etahn nets a guaranteed hit and crit every time..... Meh....

Actually I think that is false. Once you use accuracy corrector you cancel all dice results and add 2 hit results:

When attacking, during the "Modify Attack Dice" step, you may cancel all of your dice results. Then, you may add 2 hit results to your roll.

Your dice cannot be modified again during this attack.

That last sentence means that you cannot change one of the hit results into a crit with Ethan's ability. So AC doesn't mesh well with Ethan.

Oh well. I have never used the card before so I'm not to familiar with it. Advanced sensors seems better anyways. I can use ptl, clear stress, gain shield....

Overall though, thoughts on build? What's it going struggle against? It's only 8 green dice a round without range bonuses, but decent pilot skill.... I wonder if a swarm will destroy it easily? Bug zappers would be real bad to face.

I think the list is fine (especially with advanced sensors). Etahn + Ten Numb gives a decent answer against AT+stealth interceptors, aggressors and the extra crits will help against all kinds of large-based ships. Swarms may in fact be problematic, although Jake might be able to get you the win if you can thin down the enemy significantly enough by the time Ten & E'tahn bite it...

Good point. I guess I will have to really plan my game based on opponent. Jake will b great late game against swarms. Especially if I don't stress him. I can take focus. Shoot (and hope I roll a focus), spend focus on shot, then boost out of the way. ...

Jake's ability triggers when you perform the action, not when you spend the focus token

otherwise he would just be a worse version of turr phennir

I threw together an Etan list that noone's bothered to comment on, using Sensor Jammer and Predator, and a Blackmoon pilot with the elite talent r2 and the same upgrades, backed up by a pair of Zs.

It can probably be improved, but noone wants to comment on it.

I never saw it...

I have posted some suggestions on your list, btw

2 e wings in a list, and not a silly 2 ship build with corran and etahn!??

Love it!

I could also switch out ptl on Jake for swarm tactics. That way Etahn would be firing at ps 9 as well.

Personally I prefer PtL. Jake focusses, gets a free barrel roll, and then can push the limit for boost (to completely dodge an arc). Or even if you can't or don't need to dodge arcs, that barrel roll can help you get the preferred range, and you can use push the limit to ensure you got a focus + evade to keep him alive (or focus + TL if he's already out of arcs).

Shooting with 2 ships at PS9 can be really helpful in certain matchups, but sometimes it won't matter (like when you fly against a bunch of low PS enemies). Whereas PtL is going to be helpful in every matchup.

Also, keep in mind that Jake is your closer----its a ship that you definitely don't want to be compromising on survivability. Once you get into the endgame with just Jake vs whatever enemies remain, you will be so glad you've got the ability to take up to 3 actions each turn if you need to. Having said that, there are some matchups that Jake by himself just can't win (basically anything that can mitigate 2+ damage per turn----of course that won't be a problem if you kill those things while your other ships are still alive)

Jake's ability triggers when you perform the action, not when you spend the focus token

Jake's ability triggers whenever he receives a focus token. He could get it from Garven to trigger his ability.

He just needs to receive it, it doesn't have to be the action only.

I believe the wording is: 'after you perform a focus action or are assigned a focus token you may perform a free barrel roll action'. So yes, when Garven gives Jake a focus, he could barrel roll, but that does not allow him to barrel roll after spending the focus token. Unless it was changed in the FAQ?

I just got the a wing a couple days ago and haven't even given it a try. I guess I misinterpreted the card. Your way makes a lot of sense.

Sorry I haven't used him in a while, so you're probably right on the wording.

The fact remains it is whenever you receive a focus token, not just when you perform an action.

So can his ability trigger more than once in a round? I guess twice would be max though right because he can't do an action more than once, or does his free boost not count? I think this would work nicely with the new k wing pilot coming out.

According to the rules, you can't perform the same action more than once...

Yes twice at max since he can only perform an action once.

It's my understanding Jake can only BR once in a round. Similar to Turr Phennir, if he boosts as his action to get in arc to attack, he can't boost again after the attack (his pilot ability), even though it's free, because he has already performed that action once this round.

EDIT: I think you're referring to the pilot skill (which is a boost or a BR) which could trigger twice a round, assuming you didn't do one of those moves already
