Ultimate Collection?

By coloradog1, in X-Wing

Hello all.

New to the game. Looking for some help. I tend to go full bore when I get into something, so, with that in mind I am looking for what I would need to purchase in order to have everything I need to pretty much build any squadron. I would appreciate any help in how many of the core set and each expansion I would need to purchase. I have started by purchasing a decent size collection, but need some help in determining how many additional quantities I need for each expansion from each wave.

Essentially, what would be needed to have the "Ultimate Collection"? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

8 of everything should be a good starting point

My general rule of thumb is enough of each ship to make 100 points out of just that basic ship.

If you want to use that ship for special campaigns and scenarios, then probably 1-2 more.

I would say 1 of everything with exceptions of 2 core sets and 2 IG-88's would get you pretty much what you need. After that you might add another Bwing, phantom, z-95, or Y-wings depending on the numbers you want in a squad

This is a good start to aim for.

This is what I do. If you can field each ship in its lowest point cost to 100 points you have the "Ultimate Collection" as far as never not being able to run any list you want to.

Honestly,

I would tell you if you can afford it buy 1 of each exp for Rebels and Imperials to start with. Find What you like flying and go from there. I was blessed with the ability over time to pick up at least 3 of each small, 2 of each large, for rebels and imperials, naked you can run at least 3 of every ship in the game as a basic pilot (exception VT-49). It gives me the options to play a lot of different games and play test alot of different lists. On a whole with the exception of tie swarm or z95 swarm 3 of each ship is a great goal to have for small and 2 of each large you will not be running more then that within a game. (maybe 3 bounty hunters)

(I started with 4 core sets because back in 2013 target sold x-wing and had them on clearance, I would tell you 2 starters is the best option for valve, the extra dice is so nice and the ships pay for themselves)

sorry for edits my brain is not working

Hi new guy welcome.

I'm gonna be honest you may think your just gonna buy what you need but truth is you'll buy everything just like we all do...it's a sickness and we cant stop!

I would also go with 1 each (maybe 2 starter sets for dice and "cheap" TIEs and X-Wing) and then build up the rest depending on what ships you like to play.

I don't think you'll need every ship type to be able to fill 100p with. First of all not every ship makes sense to spam, second you might not like some play styles and third some ships just do better with several upgrades basically lowering the number in 100p lists.

If you really want the "ultimate collection" you need to define more what it is. If you take Epic format into account the "ultimate collection" suddenly has 3x as many ships!

Wow I totally missed that you are a new guy here so Welcome to the forum if you need help with anything about the game or storage, ask. most people here love to help out with anything and everything.

2 core sets

1 X-Wing expansion

3 TIE Fighter expansion

2 of every other small ship expansion

1 of every large ship expansion (+1 more IG-88)

2 of each aces expansion

1 of each Huge ship

That would let you run any list you are seriously likely to run. You'd only need more ships than that if you wanted to run some sort of weird super casual list, or incredibly niche list that involves silly investment in a certain ship.

If you are sticking to standard play (100 point lists) I wouldn't really get more than 5 of any small base ship unless you really want to fly a swarm list. Either 7 or 8 Tie Fighters/Z-95s. Other than that, 3 or 4 of each small based ship will be more than enough to run the majority of lists out there. You don't need more than two of any of the large based ships, especially the ones with turrets. You can run 3 Firesprays in a list if you find you really like those. Also, 3 or 4 shuttles can be kind of fun, but very difficult to fly.

If I were you I would start with what you have already purchased and play a few lists. See where you want to go from there.

The good news is when you eventually get bored of the game, you have a collection of desk ornaments. At least, that's what I keep telling myself

Hi and Welcome.

So I agree with the other posters in that 100 points of the lowest PS ship of every ship type is technically what you need to play every squad available. However, in my experience, several problems arise with this approach in a game that is still expanding. But the biggest problem with it for me has been all the re-paints/Aces.

After you get 100 points of a given ship type, chances are actually pretty good that they will release a repaint of some sort for that ship. So as a completionist, over time you will acquire more than the needed 100 points in any given ship. Case in point, the new Raider comes with a TIE Advanced. Most players I know already have 4, so a fifth one is overkill to a certain degree. See also the Imperial Aces set. Thanks to that I now have 9 (yikes) TIE Interceptors.

Now, as others have said if you play Epic or perhaps have some sort of campaign, having a ton of ships is kinda necessary. But if all you want is the 100pt. dogfight, then I would suggest buying nearly 100 points of each ship. This allows you to run 98% of the available lists and also gives you room to buy re-paints/Aces without having ships you can't field.

Also two core sets are a great value, as it gives you the second set of dice and the ships are cheaper than the individual expansions.

Hello, welcome to xwing!

I've only started playing this game in December, but I'm like you and went all out, I currently own 2-3 each of the large ships and at least 3 of each small ship besides the Starviper and HWK but that's changing soon lol

As stated above, the more the merrier, because you want some ships just for the upgrade cards ex: Tantive but if you want to give Epic a try also, I'd recommend at least 1 of each huge ship.

Again, welcome

This is what I do. If you can field each ship in its lowest point cost to 100 points you have the "Ultimate Collection" as far as never not being able to run any list you want to.

Although, that is not technically true.

Going by that rule, I'll have purchased 2 Imperial Aces packs (letting me run 4 Royal Guard Pilots) which gives me 4 Targeting Computer upgrades.

I could try to run 7 x Academy Pilots with Targeting Computers, and realize I need to purchase 2 extra Imperial Aces packs ;)

Therefore, for the "Extra-Ultimate Collection", being able to fly 100pts of the cheapest pilot in the expansion pack is simply a baseline.

You then need to look at each upgrade card, figure how many of that card you can fit in 100pts, and make sure you have that many!

There's a cool optimization problem in trying to figure out what's the cheapest way to be able to literally fly any legal 100-point list.

Are you looking to play epic or not bc that has a huge impact for the every list possible and I would recommend first going for every list possible in the standard hundred points seen how much you love the game and then taking it from there

You sure you want go go overboard from the start?

If you're looking to invest crazy amounts like it looks like you're suggesting I'd recommend sticking with what you have and if you need more ships for a particular build then buy them as and when you need them. You can run five HWKs but nobody ever would.

Depends what you like.

I (and my buds) love the Original Trilogy (OT) and have no interest in Expanded Universe (EU). Therefore, I have at least 2 of each OT ship and proxy cards/buy them individually from the EU expansions.

I never have and probably never will play in a tournament so the odd proxied card isn't an issue.

Again, depends on your preferences.

Yeah HWK's are where my rule kinda stops, Still I have 3 and as scum could probably run 4...

Actually I think you can run 6 HWK's in 100 point matches... It's stupid, but possible. And yes I have 6

Epic really throws of the 100 point list thing out the window for the "Ultimate" collection

You now have 300 points to spend. Fortunately there are additional limits:

300 points

12 of each small based ship

6 of each large based ship

5 epic points of huge ships

Team epic adds even more

200 points per person (2 people per side)

8 of each small based ship per person

4 of each large based ship per person

3 epic points per person

So, it gets crazy depending on how "ultimate" you actually want to get

I kind of limit most ships to 4. Not for any reason other than taste. In Epic this forces a few more type of ships.

Some Exceptions: TIE L/n 8; TIE Interceptor (I'll only field 4 but I have 4 of each)

Others like E-Wing; TIE Defender and Phantom 2 only

Large ships other than Lambda only 1.

That clearly isn't the ultimate compared to what others are posting but it's plenty for most any size match and forces a variety of ships in larger matches.

Before you go ham, look around on this and other forums. Some people are always looking to sell their collections for a handsome discount (even cheaper than online store prices) and they are usually nice enough to include a carrying case and/or playing mat. I just saw a guy on Reddit yesterday offering up his collection (probably worth $680 based on Miniature-Market prices) for only $500. Included all ships, several multiples, and a case/mat.

48 TIE Fighters, 12 TIE Bombers, 12 TIE Interceptors and 8 Lambda Shuttles.

A.K.A. 1 Imperial Star Destroyer's worth of ships.
