I hate to do this, but I am frustrated

By KILODEN, in X-Wing

The new 40K board game was at the printer a week or 2 after the raider hit the printer (which was on the boat and put back to at the printer)

Now call me crazy, but this is a new game, a board game with lots of pieces and cards and stuff. It is shipping now, and the raider is still at printer.

I know I am going to draw flak for not being patient and all that stuff, but how does a brand new board game hit the printer after a game piece for an established game and is completed in record time?

I can only guess that they are not giving us all the information on the raider and are holding it for a special release, say Gen Con. which if it goes the way wave 5 did, where Gen Con people got theirs months before it was released to the rest of us, will really tick me off. I can understand holding off until the regionals are at least done. But for the love of the Emperor, please do not have another Gen Con repeat unless you release the raider within a week or two after Gen Con.

Please FFG I beg you, please don't punish those of us who cannot attend Gen Con.

thank you

You do understand that they have different factories for different products. And not all products require the same amount of time to produce.

And the upcoming page is not 100% accurate. We have confirmation from FFG that the current cycles for Netrunner and Star Wars LCG are already all printed.

I think the epic ships require a lot more intensive production and assembly than their other products. Does anyone know how long the CR-90 and Rebel Transport were at the printers?

The Raider involves a lot of painting, and has a lot of parts.

If (and this is speculation) FFG found during their quality controls that the Raider's wings or other parts were not properly mounted and were falling off during shipment, then that could have necessitated some retooling and repair. I know a lot of people (myself included) were frustrated with the engines that fell off of the CR90.

We don't know if the board game is being made at the same place. But printing cards, the board, ect would take very little time. The plastic pieces in that game are very simple and easy to produce relative to the Raider.

Or in other words, apples and oranges really.

I can only guess that they are not giving us all the information on the raider and are holding it for a special release, say Gen Con.

There is likely something going on that we know nothing of, but holding it for a special release makes no sense.

They don't charge more at GenCon, they won't sell more at GenCon either. There is no reason whatsoever for them to hold on to it, if it were ready. That means the reason it's not in stores yet, is because it's not ready.

The post-manufacture assembly on something like the raider is a whole different animal than the simple printing required for a board game. Even wave 7 will probably take a fraction of the time that the raider does to "print".

I just do not get that it went from " On the Boat" to 'At the printer". I am guessing they shipped some back after they fell apart during transport.

Or the guy updating the upcoming page changed the wrong product to "on the boat" and had to switch it back later.

Just because it said it was on the boat doesn't mean it really was on the boat.

Hm...Epic play is my jam! I think it is superior than the standard 100pt format in every way. Not having the Raider is really "killing my buzz," as I intend on working on a campaign involving a Raider + Squadrons vs a Corvette + Squadrons. I know I can proxy, but it's kinda hard to work out the details without the actual piece in hand.

However, I do not share this sentiment in the OP. Just remember this game is for fun and relax. Use the opportunity to do something else fun that you enjoy...if this game gives you any grief, then simply stop playing it/ignore the thing that bothers you.

The whole point is for you to enjoy yourself, right?

The assasins game is 4 bits of laminated card a bunch of models that already existed and 4 new models, the rules are lackluster at best.

It's minimal effort to fool mugs out of £75.

This actually isn't true.

Gencon is an event built to sell product, introduce board games, and bring in a crowd of gamers. I feel their sales would get hit from LGS if they released the raider prior to gencon.

While it does suck on the consumer end, most people buy the release at Gencon just to resell them at a higher price via ebay. This assures FFG that their product will sellout even if it is being resold so from their standpoint they are making the sales they need to make.

Also note that FFG gets more profit form their own sales vs distributor sales to LGS.

Pretty sure he means Forbidden Stars from FFG.

LOL. Ninja'd.

I feel you man

I'm going to agree with the OP, this will be a special release at GenCon in "limited quantity" and the those who cannot attend GenCon will have to wait another month or so. I see the Hound's Tooth and that wave of ships getting released there as well. This will be in addition to the Star Wars Imp Assault Expansions. Good luck spending half your day in that booth line.

It's great hype.

Still unacceptable time lapse from preview. Also we expected this to be at worse June. It's looking like August at this rate. Nearly 8 months.

Fix it.

As for negativity: in a personal, caring note, kiloden try and find some way around it. Don't let your spark for Xwing fade due to frustration. Different games frustrate for different reasons. I love Starcraft. But I never play any more due to frustration with my own lack of skill and the competitiveness and slow releases. I really wish I still played.

Find a game your friends enjoy and play that for a while. If all else fails. Even try some campaigns for Xwing or just use the corvette imperial side for a while.

I hope you get along okay. :)

Exactly. Life's too short...once, at my LGS between a release dry spell, we played a tournament called Wave 1 Turbo. You could only play X, Y, Tie, Advanced, but use any legal pilots and upgrades that were out at the time.

Was it gonna take the tournament scene by storm? No, but it was good fun, and that was the important thing.

From a worldwide standpoint please explain to me what they have to gain by withholding a major product launch that is highly anticipated if the product is done and ready to go? It's quite obvious people want this...it is currently the talk of the game and the company knows this I think. I see nothing for them to gain and plenty to lose by purposely withholding this as some of you are claiming. As for your contention that they make more by selling directly...that may be true but the extra per unit they make is nothing compared to what they will make total when the raider hits. I see no reason for this to be withheld until after gencon and that suggestion is almost as absurd as the suggestions that they "don't want to mess with regionals."

Companies don't usually delay in realizing profit especially if it could be realized now at the end of Q2 as opposed to the beginning of Q3. It makes no sense (unless ffg operates on a nonstandard fiscal calendar which I doubt.)

These threads are usually pretty good at showing me who actually knows a thing or two about business, business cycles, supply chain management, and corporate thinking....and how many people speak from their posterior on things they know little to nothing about.

The transport and CR-90 were announced at GenCon 2013 and the CR-90 wasn't released until the end of May the following year, 9 months. There were previews of the CR-90 at least as far back as February that year, and probably before, I don't want to dig through the whole news archive. Point being, this is hardly out of the ordinary for Epic ships, as much as anything can be ordinary.

I'm actually excited for that new 40k board game. Looks like it borrowed a lot of elements from Twilight Imperium (the only game that I dare say I love more than x-wing).

Printing that's literal printing is done in Germany.

It's actually more Starcraft than TI3, as far as I can tell. Order stacks, combat decks, fixed board, asymmetric factions with different units, resources and base building - it all looks very similar.

I'm really looking forward to it as well.

So this frustration is the flip side to FFG's announcement and previews style. You get to know what's coming, but you have to wait for it to come out. In GW land they tell you one week out.

Maybe the raider will be in the new Movie, so LucasArts/Disney told FFG not to release it until the movie is out, so that nerds playing this fantastic game don't have an actual model of stuff that will be new in the movie ;-)
