Obi-wan was a sith?

By DanDoulogos, in X-Wing

"Only a Sith deals in absolutes..." - Obi-wan Kenobi.

Clearly a Jedi would not have dealt with this thought in the absolute fashion Kenobi used ("Only..."), but would have phrased it with some wiggle room, ("Sith often deal in absolutes...").

If Obi-wan meant what he said, and if what he said was true, it follows that he was a sith.

Okay - seriously, Obi-wan isn't a sith... I am just bored, and remembered how hilarious that quote was when I first heard it, and marveled at how, in the first three movies, the dark side was bad, and the light side was good, and there was no attempt to try and frame good or bad in terms of the moral equations of our day. When Obi-wan spouted this illogical moralism, I thought to myself - good gravy! Didn't the writer of that line realize that he phrased it in a way that had Obi-wan dealing in absolutes (Only a Sith? That's an absolute there mister...).

Am I the only one who thought that was an odd line?

lol - I'm just enjoy the premise in your comment that there was a competent writer involved with the prequels.... ;)

Nobody ever said George wrote great dialogue.

Literally no one, not even Harrison ford.

While I doubt it was intentional, it does succinctly highlight the arrogance of the Jedi Council that existed in the Republic.

Lucas definitely made the Jedi Council seem incredibly inept in the PT.

The Jedi council was completely inapt. Kind of fitting really, since obi-wan wasn't really having a philisofical debate, he was speaking to a deranged mad man.

The entire love story meanwhile, was one thing that could have been a little less overplayed in ep2

The Jedi just have good pr, look at qui gon he was a conman a liar and a crap swordsman.

Not true. Maul was just really good, the only reason Obi-wan, a padawan, won was via a SURPRISE attack.

Remember, the force was clouded. That which they relied on to guide them wasn't working right.

Well... if Obi WAS a sith (remember only 2) the he would have killed anikin outright, and there would have been no Darth Vader as we know it.

And they were exceedingly argrogent and misguided, effector becoming lazy after many years of peace. Arguably qui gon was the only Jedi who seemed to understand the duty of the Jedi toward the people, most of the others had merely become tools of politics and had distanced themselves from their active duty.

Huh?

yeah, I disagree re: Jinn - he even said to Anakin "I didn't come here to free slaves" - but he will manipulate people and events to benefit himself / the Jedi

Didn't they say they were peace keepers and do not fight wars then went on to be generals? Palpatine engineered it but it was a Jedi war.

or... a Sith war. ;)

As long as we are bringing weird prequel stuff up remember that the Clone Wars and the Empire were created by Jar Jar Binks (we could argue that Jar Jar was manipulated by Palpatine, but deep down we know it is all Jar Jar's fault)

Hey, I'm right there with you on this one, that was a really bad line that even I can't defend.

I, too, laugh every time I hear Obi-Wan say that line.

THE SITH SHALL RISE AGAIN!!!!!

"Do, or do not. There is no try."

Yoda?! NOOOooooo!

I quoted that yesterday. Awful. No defense. None.

I just chalk it up to things like, "Zero tolerance."

Intolerance of intolerance is still intolerance. And choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil.

or... a Sith war. ;)

O'a, as we like to call it around these he'a pa'ts: The Wo'a of Jedi Aggreshin.

For those that were questioning qui gon.... You were correct

I'm sure every fan boy of the last 16 years would love to rewrite the entire prequel trilogy to include the following:

Actual dialogue and not the rambling scribblings of once promising director.

Actual love story with Ani and Padme, instead of creepy pervert stuff.

Battle droids that are fearsome and effective. Or better yet an enemy worthy of the build up the Clone Wars got when it was mentioned first back in 77.

An actual friendship/bromance between Kenobi and Ani.

Better build up to Ani's seduction to the dark side.

Stop calling him Ani!

One day I hope Obi-Wan's character will have a much better writer than George so that he wouldn't be seen as such a liar and hypocrit. Yes, bad writing was a problem in the OT too, mostly in ROTJ tho.

There's a two hour fan edit of the prequels that actually manages to make the love story believable using cut footage.

It goes to show what a difference decent editing can make.

Also how much unnecessary crap there is in those films.
