Imperial list help for local store tournament - Defender or Phantom?

By JamieSpace, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi, I have a local store swiss tournament coming up and I really want to run with some imperials. I don't have a Decimator so have come up with the following couple of lists. I welcome some advice on them and ultimately what would be good to run with.

Colonel Vessery (35)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

Omicron Group Pilot (21)
Advanced Sensors (3)
Darth Vader (3)

"Dark Curse" (16)
Targeting Computer (2)

Academy Pilot (12)

Total: 100

The list seems to work well due to having a hard to hit tie fighter giving target locks for vessery and a doom shuttle that needs to be dealt with.

I have thought about changing AS to FCS on the shuttle and changing VI for Lone wolf on the Defender to help with defence.

Or this list: With a phantom and interceptor

Omicron Group Pilot (21)
Advanced Sensors (3)
Darth Vader (3)

Soontir Fel (27)
Push the Limit (3)
Stealth Device (3)
Autothrusters (2)
Royal Guard TIE (0)

"Echo" (30)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Fire-Control System (2)
Intelligence Agent (1)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

Total: 100

Im not sure how well Echo will do in the current high PS turret meta of two ships and the new decloak rules but I like her ability to end up in loads of places. The Baron and shuttle sort of speak for them selves!

A thought is putting a weapon engineer on the shuttle as well as the title. That way you can maintain two target locks as well as target lock anywhere on the board. That way you can possibly counter builds with higher PS or even arc dodgers. It gives the COL more options when targeting enemies as well.

I like the second build better. Soontir and Echo are slipperry and you get PS9 and PS8 pilots on the board.

Defender why is it even a question ;)

For the first list, yes, make the change you are thinking of (AS to FCS & VI to LW), and its not bad.

For the second list, you should drop advanced sensors for recon specialist on Echo. While Echo is pretty good at dodging arcs, sometimes its not possible, and against a higher PS pilot, the double focus can let him live a tiny bit longer. Against turrets, your arc-dodging means diddly, so the recon specialist is again pretty clutch to squeeze another turn or two of damage out of him.

Personally every time i fly a Phantom (usually Whisper) i fly them with Rebel Captive to dissuade attacking her. I'd drop the Sensors on the omnicron, and put RC on echo, giving you 99 points, which is good for initiative, at 8 PS there are a bunch that shoot before her and you want her to be stealthed when she is shot at to minimize threat of death.

Rebel Captive doesn't help Echo as much as it does Whisper because the difference between 8 & 9 is meaningful (since there are a number of players running PS9). With Whisper, you have a chance of getting initiative, shooting first to activate ACD, and then getting your free focus if you hit. So shooting at her is rough (4 green dice + 1 or 2 tokens and the first shooter takes a stress). With Echo, a PS9 opponent is taking the stress, but only has to get through 2 green dice and at most 1 defensive token.

well what i do is i'd take an evade with having the Rebel Captive and thats 2 dice, plus one free evade and no one (other than my Chirp Whisper list that ive seen anyway) ran more than 1 ship above PS 9 so the hope is ther at 8 that one shot doesnt kill you, or keep out of the arc of the afforementioned attacker and shoot first with no first shooter. But to play it safe i 99% of the time take an evade, unless a barrel roll will get me out of arc, while keeping them in mine. regardless of pilot in the phantom.

Right I had a go at my first list again (with Lone wolf instead of VI & FCS instead of AS). It won but luck was involved by poor HLC rolling on my opponents part.

Vessery one shot opponent's Tycho after he unloaded his prockets on me leaving the Col. with only 2 health left.

Then Dark Curse did his annoying business by evading a lot of Dash's HLC and managed to deal 6 damage to him in return. After a lot of chasing Dash down (that thing is fast) the shuttle finished the job with Vader (once it finally tuned around)

Lessons learnt:

  • Don't offer the Defender up as an easy target too early, try to get him to commit.
  • Get the shuttle lined up early and VADER!!! + fly the ties in to mix things up quickly.
  • Vessery with no VI is just too low, my whole list moved before his.

So the changes I'm thinking are:

Rexler Brath (37)
Lone Wolf (2)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

"Dark Curse" (16)

Academy Pilot (12)

Omicron Group Pilot (21)
Darth Vader (3)

Total: 98

Now my questions is I have 2 points left. Do I put FCS back on the shuttle? Do I put Tactician on the shuttle? Do I put int agent on the shuttle (no much use) and have 1 pt initiative.

Maybe I put TC on DC again as it did come into play or keep two points for initiative?

Thoughts???

I don't think there's anything wrong with your first list. You just need to practice with it more, from the sound of it ;)

However, your second list is good too. Although, I suggest predator on Brath instead of lone wolf so that: (a) he can fly close to the TIEs and not worry about the range restriction on LW and (b) he will have slightly more likelihood to activate his pilot ability with predator.

The last point can then be used for an intel agent or enhanced scopes on the shuttle.

Alternatively, you could just put FCS on the shuttle. That would be good too.

hmm I do need to practice and Its a tough decision.

Lone wolf is great for the end game where the defender starts to really shine and it really helps the defender survive but yes there will be a lot of times it wont trigger as I try to not make him an obv target.

Predator is great! especially as there are a lot of blue B-wings around atm and Rex does like to reroll eyes and keep the focus once shields are down!

I just threw this together,

It drops the HLC, and puts on a Mangler so you can potentially get two or 2 crits per turn instead of just 1 also allows you to always focus and lock if needed thanks to PTL and Yorr to eat stress to allow for a 4K plus two more actions the following turn.

Its a nice list I have thought about panic 217, but the shuttle is there to destroy then die tbh (don't want too many points on it). I also find it hard to keep it in range 1-2 of the fast Defender.

I'm just waying up Love Wolf vs Predator on Rex and how to fly it!

This. The 2nd list is the stronger list in my opinion.
