Tinkerer Talent: Is there a Limitation to the size?

By GM Hooly, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

How does this work in OggDude's character editor?

As I understand, it needs to be a piece of gear owned by that character, so you can't Tinker with another player's stuff?

Yeah, for OggDudes the Tinkerer talent can only be applied to something that character has in their inventory.

In terms of the game rules, it's my understanding that you can use Tinkerer on an ally's piece of gear, provided your have the means to access that gear on a semi-regular basis to "maintain" the bonus. I think it's notable that Tinkerer lacks the verbiage of Jury-Rigged in that the later only benefits a piece of gear that you are using, where the former doesn't fuss about who's using the tweaked piece of gear.

Thanks Donovan, that's what I thought. We haven't really used Tinker before, only Jury Rigged (which shows up as an attachment in the editor).

It makes sense to have it apply to a companion, as long as they are in the same group or always around you. The fluff for the Outlaw Tech and Modder seems to suggest you can use it on your friend's stuff too.

I guess to simulate this in the editor, you'd just have to create an identical item with an extra hardpoint?

The player was also considering applying it to their personal scratch-built droid bodyguard, which seems in keeping with the SM rules. Again, I guess you'd just have to create this from scratch in the editor?

We have a player who wants to create a new character who is no great shakes in combat personally (that's the Gadgeteer Bounty Hunter's shtick) but wants to be a 'Q' type character who can invent stuff and buff other people.

I think that tinkerer can be applied to starship as it's the only way we have to increase the starship HP. It is also a very thematically appropriate thing as we often see ships that are modified way beyond the factory specifications. So i do not think that tinkering with a ship is a powergaming, but since it certainly has the potential for abuse, i'd interpret the starship as a single peice of equipment, so you can only add 1 HP. IMO this gives the perfect balance between modifying a ship and avoiding abuse of the system.

Of course in the future technician splatbook we may have spec or talent specifically designed to add HP, but for now an extended interpretation of tinkerer is probably the best way to modify starships.

Custom Layout, a final tier ability from Modder in Special Modifications gives their Signature Vehicle +2HP.

It's all a bit vague, isn't it.

Jury Rigged covers Weapons or Armor - Gives a permanent Improvement from a limited Repertoire until you loose it.

Tinkerer covers "equipment" - Gives +1HP to the item, but you still have to attach the Mods yourself.

Custom Layout covers Vehicles only - +2HP to your Signature Vehicle.

I'd be inclined to allow Tinkerer for a Vehicle.

I'd only allow one one Tinkering bonus for any bit of gear, regardless how many players want to make improvements. One Tinker per item.

I would allow Jury Rigged and Tinkering on the same item.

One think I think I'd like to add is fiddling a bit more with Jury Rigged.

I'd let Jury Rigged be applied to any item, maybe some other raw bonuses to choose from for Vehicles or Gear.

I think getting a Despair on any result with a Jury Rigged item should allow the GM to have the item fritzing the Jury Rigged bonus, if not the whole item (or ship system) for the short term. Thus we could have the Millenium Falcons souped up Hyperdrive, with it's Jury Rigged bonus, blowing out until the crew get it fixed. and so on.
