Super Dash, HLC, Where does Range 1/Range 2 take place.

By Chioxin, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I know, "DUH! It's at range 2 on the ruler!"

No no...

So what if I'm shooting at something and it literally falls on the line of "Range 1." Let's say half of it's base is on range 1, but half of its base is on range 2. Does that mean I'm firing at range one and do not have a shot at him even though technically... he can fall under range 2? I have a feeling that it's "Closest corner to closest corner period," and nothing beyond closest corner counts.

If it is at, or inside, of R1 then the target is at R1 for your turret even if a large portion of it is outside of R1.

Range is always the shortest distance. If you were firing at a CR 90 you could see it filling multiple range spans but it still counts as whatever is closest.

That being said, for many effects, Range and Arc are measured independently.

If the foe has Autothrusters, and is in Range 3 in arc, but Range 2 out of arc, Autothrusters still don't trigger.

That's really confusing.

If they are in range 3 in or out of arc, Autothrusters triggers.

If they are range 2 out of arc, autothrustres triggers. [that was the counter to turrets.]

In your example I'd say that Autothrusters is triggered? I'm confused why it doesn't.

I agree, why would Autothrusters not trigger?

They are in arc and are in range 2.

Hey, don't look at me: that's the ruling in the FAQ. I was on YOUR side before it landed.

I think you are misunderstanding the FAQ.

Autothrusters does not trigger if the ship equipped with Autothrusters is inside the attacker’s primary or auxiliary firing arc at Range 1–2.

If a ship with a turret weapon attacks a ship equipped with Autothrusters, first measure closest point to closest point to determine range, then use the printed firing arc on the attacker to determine whether the defender is in the attacker’s firing arc.

My understanding is that the auxiliary firing arc is something like the rear arc on the Firespray. But for turrets, if you are at range 2, you have to be within the firing arc printed on the card to not activate Autothrusters.

I feel I should specify that this only applies to ships with turrets. A regular ship in this situation would only be measuring within its arc and would trigger Autothrusters.

You have to do the steps separately, in order, and each one must be negative in order to activate Autothrusters (Range >2 AND Arc = No, for those of us that like logic). For the example above (in arc is range 3, but out of arc is range 2):

First measure closest point to closest point to determine range. Measuring shows that the ship is in range 2. That means, if the ship is inside the firing arc, not just the point you just used for range, but any part of the ship at all, Autothrusters will be turned off.

Then use the printed firing arc on the attacker to determine whether the defender is in the attacker’s firing arc. Firing arc manages to nick the back corner of the base, so the ship is within firing arc. Because of this and the earlier check of range 2, the ship is not eligible for Autothrusters.
