Tournament Points to Win

By RedSquadronK, in Star Wars: Armada

I've been wondering this for a while, but now that Wave 1 has been out for a bit hopefully there have been enough tournaments to start getting a read on this from the community.

With the tournament point system, it's not enough to just go undefeated on the day and pick up the trophy. It depends greatly on how much you win by.

How many tournament points have people found the winners to end up with after the 3 rounds of swiss?

Getting an idea of the average amount you need to expect to have can really help you decide if you you need to risk more in a game to try and go for the 10-0 sweep or if you can slide by with the 6-4 win. My guess is that people will generally get 22points, but that's pure speculation based on a schedule like 7-3, 7-3, 8-2 seeming reasonable.

So what have people found and what do people think? How many points does it take to win a tournament?

My last tournament the winner ended up with 24 points, then I think it was 22 and 20 after that.

The top 4 results in the tournament I've just left were 25, 24, 23, and 20. These were from a tournament of 14 players.

The FAQ hasn't been updated to reflect the 300 point tournament (It's still geared to 150 points...) so the points are a little wonky at the moment.

That said what matchup you face greatly determines how the game plays at the higher level. If you're in the running for the win, you generally want to play aggressively to keep the lead. Against bad matchups you may want to deploy conservatively to minimise loss. It takes a while to get used to playing in the tournament system though, it's often not as clearcut as it is in X-Wing how to correctly aim for a bracket (probably because the game is still new.)

Byes are super unbalancing since 10-0 is a pretty rare result in Armada games.

Have you checked for the latest version on the product page? The version we used at our last tournament was revised May 18 and includes a new table for victory margins and some great clarifications for 300 point play.

All 3 of my games today were 10-0. That said, I was playing a pretty aggressive list, so I expect that pushed it more to either win big or lose big.

Additionally Byes are not worth 10pts, but 8pts with a 61pt MoV. And checking even the 150pt Tournament Rules they have never been 10pts.

I think 8 points per match is a good reference point to gauging your chances of winning. That's what i'd had in my head as a metric, and it lines up with the winning results of 24 and 25 in the first few points.

In terms of ties, I think a 10-0 + 6-4 could be worth more than a pair of 8-2 due to the non-linear nature of the point breaks on the chart.

We had a 2 round tournament (due to time) back when we just had the core set and winning scores were 17, 16, 14.

the 3 ive seen locally have been won at 30pts, 27pts, and 29pts. In the first one (180pt lists) the second place person had 20pts, in the second event, they had 16pts (3 way tie), and the 3rd event they had 22pts.

I agree if you can go into round 3 with 16-20 points you have a strong chance if you can 9-1, or 10-0 round 3 to take first. it really depends on the event. The first and third event I had gone 20-0, 19-1 by end of round 2 so I had it in the bag if i just drop to speed 0 and go for a 5-5 draw or even 4-6 loss. The second event was 17pts vs 16pts and the person who won 10-0'd their opponent that event was much closer.
