Damage is when you get damage cards, just hitting the shield is not inflicting damage.
That is incorrect, please re-read the damage section in the RRG.
Damage is damage. Damage effects shields first, then face down damage cards. Thus to answer the question, YES you get a victory point for dealing a damage to shields (even adjacent shields through the effect of a redirect) when attacking a rear hull zone.

I have read this Objective as meaning damage cards. Am not near the rule book but will check, later. I think there's something in there that indicates its only the cards but I don't recall what it was right now.
There isn't anything indicating as such.
It states damage on the objective.
For those who didnt play X-Wing, FFG carries on what they started there with particular wording.
When they talk about "Damage" they are meaning the raw damage effect which can be taken on shields, and then, if no shields are present, it results in a damage card being dealt against the ship.
In contrast, when FFG talks specifically about damage "to the hull" resulting in a card, they always say "When a damage card is dealt". By recognising these two important distinctions it is clear that the objective card also includes all shield damage on the rear hull zone (including if a redirect is used to "shift" that damage to another zone).

Having re-read this, this morning, it seems you are correct. Damage includes reduction in shields. I was in error.
Interesting... I would've assumed the intent was that a victory token would be earned for dealing a damage card or critical card, but the above argument is clear that the rules (as written) reward just shield hits.
One for a FAQ to confirm please
..
Shield damage is damage.
There is no doubt about that.
So if that objective isn't working as intended, it would need to be re-worded.
As it is currently worded squadrons can really win you the game.

Agreed, it is a very powerful mission for agile rebel fleets facing off against Victory Star Destroyers if they can flank them before time runs out for a couple of turns of scoring 15 points each ship per turn.
Damage is Damage
Damage cards are specified in objectives like opening salvo
