So I'm going to be running a tourney between a bunch of friends of mine in July. There will be a total of 10 players. 2 of them have everything they need but I'll need to supply everything for the other 8 players. I have a lot of ships but If people want to use multiples and what not I may run out quick. So to avoid this and make it fair for everyone I was thinking of dropping the points to 75. This has the added benefit of making setup quicker and list building since some of the players arnt as familiar with the game. I chose 75 because I feel like 50 limits it way too much and 75 still gives some freedom for swarms or fat turrets. 50 is pretty harsh IMO. Anyways just looking to get some advice or input on how you would run this type of tourney. Any ideas would be great or those with experience with this type of scenario of supplying everything. Thanks
Running a tourney but supplying the ships help!!!
75 points is a good idea, but I'd actually pre-gen the lists on offer too. That way if people are rookies you can give 'em all lists of similar viability, and spread the 'cool' stuff round so everyone gets a reasonable squad without slamming into ship out card limits.
You'll find you get a lot more time playing, too. Just have caution with the two bring-your-own players; if you've been cheerfully handing out ABXY lists and the like, and then one of them shows up with, say, a 75pt Fattest Han, you might find things might go a little grim... Fat turrets fatness grows with the smaller the points in play to kill it.

the pre made lists idea is a good one I may try that too. Also an additional question...I may buy a few more ships to supplement, so you could buy a few more ships which ones would you get? Awings, bwings, ties and squints?
What do you have? That's question number one. :-)
Edited by ReiverAnd do you have scum? That can mix'n'match pretty nicely, even if dual-88s aren't in contention. ... Or they are, but they're one point short of being even a skinny pair. ;-)
Supplying squadrons to eight players can be a major challenge depending on what you have for ships, what your take on proxies will be (guess you'll likely be using them), and how much freedom/input you allow those player for their squadrons regardless of the points you use.
I'd guess you'll really need to do the 'pregen' idea so you're sure you'd have the ships. If more than one person wants to play something you may need to figure out a bidding system or some other way to break that impasse.
So I have at least 1 of each ship including scum. Multiples include ig's, squints, ties, xwings, ywings, bwings, awings, firesprays, z95s, ewings and phantoms. If I need actual numbers then it would like this
Rebel
Z95 x 4
Xwing x 3
Awing x 3
Bwing x 4
Ywing x 3
Ewing x 2
Empire
Tie x 3
Squint x 4
Phantom x 2
Firespray x 2
Scum
Ig x 2

So I did a 6 man last year and 2 of the 6 brought their own so I was only supplying for 4 people and I did 100 points. So this year it's 10 but supplying for 8 so it's double from last years. However I acquired more ships and am lowering the points so I'm hoping this will get me by. If anything I was thinking of buying up some more ties and squints, I feel like I prolly have enough rebel ships. Maybe another defender or 2 and some bombers.
Hmm. Actually, 76 points might be a good bet - the extra point frees up a couple interesting builds, especially for IG-88. ![]()
Regarding pancakes - just don't make them too fat, else other squads (especially in the hands of new players, who'll have fewer guns on the field to start with) will really struggle; imposing a rule of, say, 50pts per ship would probably be a good idea to keep the largest turrets a little more skinny.
Note the Scum squads are pretty much to showcase the variety of the ships, and I've tried to keep squads in geneal to 2-4 ships, so newer players have less to deal with. Swarms are a legitimate build, but they simply take longer to go through the motions each round. And in my experience, new players love cool combos. I've provided the cliff-notes to advise/sales pitch each squad with accordingly. ![]()
Rebel
AAY: 2 GSP with ptl, proton rockets, y-wing with ion cannon & r3a2(or 3pt mech of your choice): 75-76 pts - The Y pins one turn, the A's swoop for the kill the next.
BBX: Biggs, blue with FCS, Blue with e2, Jan ors, 74pts (2nd FCS would make it 76pts) - Two gunboats who focus on offense and their Shepard to let them live long enough to shoot. Jan protects Biggs, and then covers B-wing butts once Biggs is gone.
AXY: Jake (ptl, VI, auto thrusters, title, refit), Y-wing (title, ion cannon), Tarn (r7), 76pts - Two very different takes on 'tough jouster' and their agile flanker.
Falcon, X: Chewbacca (Draw their Fire, Jan Ors, Lando, Tactical Jammer), Biggs (R3-A2) - an interesting synergy build that's still tactically simple for a rookie player - Hide Biggs behind Chewie!
Imperial
(I hope you really do have more than 3 TIE fighters. If you don't, you'll want to borrow 3 extras from your friends.)
Firespray, Defender: Imp. Boba (VI, tactical jammer), Vessery, 76pts - Shooting backwards never was so easy.
TIEadv, 3 TIE: Vader (ATC, EU, title), howlrunner, 2x AP, 76pts (warning: requires proxy cards for the Raider stuff) - Vader and a classic microwarm. (This list is pretty potent. Keep it away from a skilled ace pilot.)
Squint, 3 TIE: Soontir Fel (auto thrusters, rgp, ptl, stealth device), 2x AP, backstabber, 75pts - The achetypical Ace, and chaos-wreaking TIEs to help. Double-flanker potential. (This list is pretty potent too, especially with the double-flanking angle.)
Decimator, Squint: Captain Oicunn (Mara Jade, Intimidation, Dauntless), RGP (PTL, Autothrusters), 76pts - mostly a way to have fun ramming things with the Decimator, its most unique gimmick ![]()
Scum
Brobots: IG-88C with FCS, title, IG-88D with FCS, title, 76pts - Skinniest brobots I could field with a straight face. Could technically swap out for IG-88B and fletchette cannons, but on such a skinny build, I think the more interesting abilities pay off better, especially with FCS.
If you have/grab a Most Wanted set, you can run the following too:
One Of Each: Palob (crow, blaster, recon spec), N'dru (lone wolf, cluster missiles), cartel spacer (tile, HCL) - One of each, with a flanker, a zoomer, and Palob as the suprise powerhouse. Warn the player to let Palob charge up a few turns; way too many new players insist on rushing in, and HWKs suffer for it.
Viper, 3z: Xizor (FCS, dampers, VI, autothrusters, Virago, Ptorps - an upgrade for every slot!), 3x z95 pirates, 76pts (borrow some spare pirates from your mates for this one) - Xizor promises to be hilarious, so long as you explain to spread out the Z-95s at range 1-2 from each other, and then keep Xizor within their protective bubbles. Remind the player that the Ptorps don't have to actually deal damage to cause stress, and that they make a great Vader/Soontir counter (this lists greatest foe).
Firespray, Y: Scum Boba (K4, engine upgrade), kavil (blaster turret, r4 agromech), 76 pts - Who needs to worry about shooting backwards, take 2! This list is less sneaky, more blammy. A great Scum/Imperial comparison can be made at the end, if these both get fielded and especially if they fight each other.
Print the lists out, handing out upgrade cards for 'disposable' upgrades only, by the way - easier for everything involved, and means you don't run out of PTL cards so quickly. ![]()
A final disclaimer: I did these squads in my head, and wrote then on a cell phone keypad. Forgive any errors accordingly, and double check before using!
In my experience it's the tokens etc that catch you out when providing for multiple players
Ideally you want a damage deck per player or a damage deck per table
You also need at least 5 sets of asteroid, manoeuvre templates, range ruler, evade focus and target lock
Also what I had massive problems with were dice!
That's a fair point, actually. If you've run several before, I presume you've got a couple starter kits? Then perhaps lean on your other two fellow gamers to share theirs out of they've got duplicates too.
Just cleaned up a suite of potential example lists, above. I still make no promise that I haven't missed a couple points or upgrades somewhere, but at least it's in a readable format.
A pair of miniswarms aside, this should comprise 4 squads for each faction from your existing collection alone; with 8 players there should be plenty of choice even for the last pick.
The idea was not so much hyper-compeditive builds, but giving an interesting spread of ships in the 2-4 ship range for each player, showcasing some of the 'cool stuff' that you can do in the game, whilst trying to keep to the collection listed - hence a lot of ships only show up once, because that's all I'm assuming you'd have to fly, and why all three interceptors weren't automatically Soontir Fel, or the like, which while meta-savvy would be a bit boring on the day. I didn't limit myself so strictly on upgrade cards, because with any luck you'll be handing people ships, dials, and a printout of the cards rather than physical cards for every single ability, lest you face chaos on the day!
I note in idle caution the imperial lists with Soontir and Vader are probably a touch stronger than the others, simply because those two ace pilots can theoretically just about wipe out an entire enemy squad singlehandedly, if in the hands of a sufficienty skilled pilot. Nothing to worry about too much though, eh? Fly casual, after all. ![]()
Thank you guys for all the input! I don't know where to start here haha but I'll try to answer each one.

That's an awesome list man thank you! And yes I have a most wanted set, I actually have at least 1 of every expansion including epics. As far as the upgrade cards I was thinking of maybe actually printing some out on paper so mine don't get messed up and I also won't run out. Was thinking of using heavier paper too so they arnt so flimsy.

Ya fortunately my other 2 friends that are bringing their stuff are cool with sharing their maneuver templates and what not. I think right now we have 4 sets of maneuver templates, 3 sets of 6 dice (6 reds and 6 greens), loads of tokens ( I have a box I set aside with all my extra tokens and things from all the expansions), and 4 damage decks. Last time what I did that worked out pretty well was I put a piece of plywood on top of some sawhorses. The sawhorses have grooves set in them to fit a 2x4 piece of wood that you lay across between the 2 sawhorses on each side. Then you screw the plywood down onto the 2x4's. Then I pinned a big piece of black felt onto the plywood and drew two 3x3 squares with borders for cards and equipments. Then in between each play area you place your damage deck and templates. That way 2 games can play with 1 damage deck and templates (if need be). Last time I had enough but this time it may be necessary to do that way.
Slightyly off topic but good on you for tackling this project. Getting some new folk into the game and making a fun day is always a challenge because you want everyone to enjoy themselves, often it is at your expense.
If you have enough ships, I would consider making the comp small based only. That way you eradicate fat turrets. In addition to this, I would take 5 scenarios and assign them a number. At the beginning of each game a player rolls a die.
1: team deathmatch
2: scenario number 1 - escort the shuttle
3: scenario number 2 - capture the flag
Etc.
It helps balance the lists a bit by possibly giving ships objetives other than just 'kill everything'.

Also does anyone know of a site or PDF somewhere that has all available upgrades as well as a description of each and their point value that I could print out? For those that don't want to use a pre made list I could hand these out for them to choose. I tried using a squad gen online last time on my ipad but only 1 person used it I believe haha. They all used my binder I had set up so I'm think this might be a better option.
Edited by Jaden CkastI wouldn't ban large bases; a 50pt limit per ship should be plenty. It's the extra 10-20 pts that you can pour into a Falcon or Decimator that make it so Fat, and accordingly hard to deal with. I'd also suggest running simple tournament-deathmatch; if you've got relatively new players then the variety isn't all that needed, and will simplify rules teaching too. The competitive scene could sure do with more variety, but it works just fine for casuals. ![]()
Pre-made is probably the way to go, here. About the only builds on that list that give me caution are the AXY (which should be fine, but it's got an X in it and that makes me cringe by default, but then again it's Tarn so it can't be that bad, right?) and Chewie, who feels like he should really have Engine+MF or something instead of his synergy build; the setup I provided is a touch gimmicky. Not sure; I've not done a skinny pancake in a long while.
So yeah, a binder with squad lists is probably the way to go. Or go the classy route - have them laid out with the specs printed on paper, with the ships and dials sitting along the top, for that walk-in-the-door visual appeal - aside from 3 TIEs and a spare Z95, you have the ships to have all those squads fielded simultaneously! (If you do this, do take a picture before people start collecting their squads. It will be glorious!)
Regarding prizes, this does get into the tricky spot of people choosing squads. Perhaps the option is to let people pick via lottery (for who gets first pick, etc); check with your friends who were bringing their own, too. If you get everyone playing from the same approach, things might go better still.
That said, with 8 players and the 12 lists I threw together, people should have plenty of choice. That is a heck of a lot of prizes though, dude! I want to play in your games. ![]()
If you do it next time, you could instead buy a couple of extra starter sets, and thus have plenty of games components for everyone on the day that way, and then let the extra prizes be the spare X-wings and TIE fighters, with maybe a handful of unique ships for the top-three placings. ![]()

You're most welcome! It was a fun mental puzzle of inventory management one quiet afternoon while waiting for the bus. ![]()
That said, if you ever end up with a spare set of YT-2400 upgrade cards, let me know? Lone Wolf, Jan Ors, Leebo & Kyle are my favourite cards that I don't actually own. ![]()
Final thoughts:
1: Do make sure the bring-your-own guys know it's a 76pts, 50pt-per-ship limit. I once ran a game with an unusual point limit, and had half the people show up with 100pt lists anyway... which would rather defeat the point of pregen lists for ease of setup.
2: I think I like this Chubby Chewie build better: Chewie (Gunner, C3PO), 2x Tala Squadron, 76pts.
He gets to fly around, tank hits a teeny bit, shoot things a bit more, and generally be a pain in the ass. Whether he's too good for the format... heck if I know. Does get some Rebel Z95s on the table though, which helps. A rookie-friendly list, in case anyone is learning for their first game. ![]()
So finally had time to write this update for any who are interested in running a semi large tourney for friends. I'll detail what I had on hand as far as play surfaces and organization and later the results of the tourney.
Day started off putting all the 2x4 pieces of wood in the saw horses I bought at Home Depot. These saw horses had grooves cut into them that precisely fit a 2x4 snugly. They also come with adjustable legs which is nice if you are on an uneven surface. They were pretty expensive I think 36 bucks per saw horse and I needed 4 of them. Once I placed the 2x4's into the sawhorses I also had bought 2 pieces of plywood at home depot for roughly 5 bucks each. Screwed these onto the 2x4's to create a solid surface. Next used and 8x6 piece of felt to cover the plywood and then used those office clips that you squeeze to clip lots of paper together (I don't know what they are called) to fold and clip the felt onto the plywood. Once it was on the plywood I payed out 2 neoprene mats on one table and drew in the boundaries with an extra extra large white paint pen on the other. Had 2 big outside umbrellas for shade and plenty of chairs and booze and soda. Had everyone bring a dish since I was supplying the prizes and the materials. Worked out well. Tourney was 76 points.
Ok now to the results:
1st place- outrider w/ hlc and gsp w/ion turret
(New player) 2nd place- 2 bwings with fcs and one with jam ors and a naked Biggs
3rd place- 3 xwings wedge, Luke and I think a rookie I forget what droids he used
(New player) 4th place- iggy B w/ mangler, lone wolf, hull upgrade and a ywing
5th place- defender, dark curse and academy pilot
6th- tie bomber with proton and adv proton torpedoes, proton bomb and Tie advanced
(New player)7th- darth vader, howlrunner, 2 bsp
(New player)8th- wedge w/ r2d2 and adv proton torpedo, shield upgrade and airen cracken
Some of these I wasn't able to remember all the upgrades that equaled to the 76 points but the lists should be fairly accurate.
I used the TO app on my iPad to do the pairings and we did 3 rounds. I was hoping for 4 rounds but by then it was 6 or 7 pm. Everyone had a blast and some of the newer player went home and actually played a few more rounds. Then I found out one of them bought a mat and some more expansions and played over the weekend. Another guy bought a core set so now the next tourney I shouldn't have to supply hardly any ships or accessories. Even though I didn't get to play I had a lot of fun watching everyone and I was pretty busy answering any questions that came up, the first round I stayed next to the beginning players to make sure they got the rules down. Maybe next time I'll get to play haha.

Hey, I recognise that list
I admit I was pretty pleased with that one, so I'm thrilled it worked!
What flew alongside the IG-88B? Missing a ship there.
I'm glad it went well! So in the end the majority of them assembled their own lists?
And I believe the clips you're referring to are known as bulldog clips ![]()

Ya for the most part they all assembled their own lists. Most ahead of time and one guy was late and so he took your bwing list and another guy took your tie advanced list. Helped out too since I could just grab the pieces real quick instead of waiting for him to total points up and look up everything. Those premade lists really were a good idea and I would suggest doing that for whoever does a tourney that will involve newer players it helped a lot.
