Hi, in the game "Tie-Fighter" (1998 version) there are a lot of starships, and a lot of them (on all sites, Imperials, Rebels , Outlaws, Renegade Imperials) have the title "Modified". For example, "Modifed Corvette" or "Modified Fregatte". I asked my self a lot of times, what that means exactly. Of course, that they are modified -.- . But is it a general military expression, for updated vehicles, so one that is not modifed is out of date? Or does "modified" mean something total different? Greetings

It's been a while since I played the game so I can't tell you what modified would mean for specific ships in the game, but generally speaking, modified is used to essentially say something has been changed from its stock format, or how it'd come fresh out the factory/dealership/box/whatever. So just swapping weapons out, or adding or improving shields, or adding an astromech socket, or a hyperdrive, anything can make the ship be considered modified.

In TIE Fighter the modified ships are usually newer models based on older designs. The CR92A corvette from Suns of Fortune is the Modified Corvette for example.

Much as Lathrop said, the "modified" tag simply means "different from the stock configuration."

The Falcon is a "modified YT-1300" because it's had a lot of changes from the stock YT-1300 over the many years, namely a souped-up hyperdrive, a pair of quad laser cannons, military-grade shields/hull-plating, and likely various others.

Same with a Y-Wing that replaced the astromech socket with a dedicated navi-computer, it's a modified Y-Wing even though there's really not a huge change in performance.

But what bothers me, is that the imperial Command does all the work to classify a ship as modified just because of minor modifications. So I think RogueCorona is right, that the new ship versions are called modified.

Also it might be a kind of sensor glitch.

With things like the Mod/Corvette, and the Nebulon B-2 it might be a matter of the sensor systems software not being updated. Remember that sensors in Star Wars aren't exact, they are merely "Best guess" based on the information they collect (hence why in the game you see both Perceptions and Computers being viable sensor rolls) If the TIE fighter's targeting computer doesn't have a profile loaded for a Nebulon B-2 it "best guesses" the profile using available information, IFF, engine output, power core profile, size, armament, ect. and kicks back what it thinks the vessel is.

Since the information presented on the MFD is accurate, at least enough for the TIE pilot to know what he's going up against, why bother making updated ship sensor profiles, especially for ships that aren't widely used and largely by the empire, a priority...

IMO, there’s minor modifications, major modifications, and then modifications so significant that the result is a different class of ship altogether.

Taking a stock YT-1300 and upgrading any one component would be an example of the first category.

Having a Rigger take a stock YT-1300 and upgrade every single component plus all the various other things that a Rigger can do to a ship, that would be an example of the second category. IMO, this is where the Millenium Falcon sits, as portrayed in the first six episodes, and Han is one heck of a Rigger.

Taking a ship down to the keel and doing a complete rebuild from the ground up would be an example of the third category. That would be a big enough mod that you would typically come up with a different model number and/or name. IMO, that’s where the CR-92a fits into the picture. Or, to make a modern reference, the F-18 Hornet (and the variants that were created) versus the Super Hornet, where (quoting the page at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_F/A-18E/F_Super_Hornet):

The Navy retained the F/A-18 designation to help sell the program to Congress as a low-risk "derivative", though the Super Hornet is largely a new aircraft.

Modifications of the first type would probably not be visible on any scan done at range in space, unless they were made to the engines and you could see that the output profile was significantly different. But they might be visible at visual range, and probably detectable with a deep-enough detailed scan in a suitably equipped facility.

Modifications of the second type would probably be visible on a scan done at range in space, although if you were sufficiently sneaky you might be able to largely hide them, depending on their exact nature. They might rate a note in the “Ship Recognition Database”, depending on what they are.

Modifications of the third type could not be hidden even at range in space.

Hm, that is a good guess, but I should say that the term "Modified xy" also shows up in the briefing bevore the missions, and also refers to the own imperial capital ships.

For example "Defend the base unitl Admiral Thrawn arrives in his Modifed Frigate". That sounds like updated, i dont know the english term, but in german there is for military vehicles the expression "Kampfwertsteigerung". Translated word-by-word it would be "battle value increasment". From die Wikipediaarticle, the definition for that is the improvement of agility, firepower and/or speed. The reason is that "ships, tanks and aircraft are in service over decades, and during this time technical possibilitys improve." So instead of building all 20 years new carriers, you just throw away the computers and give him new toys. Wiki gives an example: The Bomber B-52 will be in service until 2040. Then, some of the bombers will be 80 years old!

So, considering that an Admiral wont fly in an out-of-date-ship, maybe the word "modified" referes to such a modernized ship.

In the case of the Nebulon-B2 aka the Modified Frigate from TIE Fighter it would be a complete rebuild though rather then just upgrading the current hardware the B2 is significantly shorter then the B and has a different hull form,
