Warped Die: Legal, or Should I Ask for Replacement?

By KTreu42, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So as you can see below, one of my green dice has an indentation on it. Definitely noticeable in feel and look, but I'm assuming since the edges of the die aren't really deformed it doesn't affect rolls at all. However, I wanted some opinions. Is this something that might be considered a problem in tournament play, and if so, do you think FFG would send a replacement for it? Thanks.

Aren't dice treated like templates, in that your opponent is allowed to request that only one set is used?

I'd replace it, as that air-pocket clearly wasn't the intent of the designers.

I'd hazard a guess that the indented side of the die is lighter, and will therefore land face-up slightly more often.

That being said, it's a manufacturing defect.

That's a valid point. They were awesome about sending some replacement pegs when I showed them I got some really nasty ones with a Starviper. Sent me 5 new peg sets :P

And thanks for the link, I already have the pics so I might as well!

FFG is always great about these things. You might need to follow up once or twice, but ive had them send me a whole ship, because it arrived in pieces.

Yeah, they'll likely just send you a whole dice set, since that's probably easier than sending you a single die. I lost a card from my damage deck and they sent me a whole new deck.

Yep they're great. I submitted a request, and made sure to compliment their customer service :) We'll see what comes of it.

I'd get that replaced for sure.

No, nothing like that in the rules really. The only rule regarding dice really is that you have to use official dice, and if you use the app it has to be in view of both players.

FFG's customer service is stellar,

Do not hestitate to contact them, I've had a similar defective die replaced in the past.

Definitly have it replaced. It's a clear manufacturing defect. As others have pointed out, that side will probably come up more often, which is not in your favor, and if the opposite happens then you'll have a discontent opponent glaring back at you. Having it replaced fixes both problems.

Guys like I said a couple days ago, I submitted the request. Thanks all.

Update: What great folks :P

And if you're really curious, you can mail me the deformed die and I'll roll it 10k times to see what happens. I'd return it of course.

Heh, awesome! That's some epic statistical breakdown there.

I may actually send it to you if you want to see if a warp like that affects rolls... also I'm assuming you have/know this info: Do you have a breakdown of the likelihood of getting hits/evades/etc. based on how many dice rolled, focus tokens, etc? It seems a lot of people know these numbers, but I've never seen them.

Sure it's a morbid curiosity of mine and it would be really cool to see how a obviously poorly balanced die rolls in my rig. I'll PM you my address.

Evade is 3/8

Evade + Focus is 5/8

Hits/Crits are 4/8

Hits/Crits + Focus is 6/8

Target Locks are 6/8

Target Lock + Focus is 93% something from memory

Multiply by the number of dice to reach the expected results. There is a nice but slightly outdated website here that will compare expected hits to expected evades http://xwingdice.com/ . The math gets complicated when you do things like howlrunner and such.

Thanks a bunch!

Shocking Update: FFG is cool.

They sent me the replacement die real quick, and threw in a free red die. Lovin' it.

They really are. :)

Not much of a shock really, not for those of us who have been here for a year or so. About once a month or so there's a post about how FFG has really gone above and beyond in terms of customer service.

Forgot to use my sarcasm font, apparently.

Heh, it'd be awesome if they sold unassembled and unpainted ships for those of us who like to paint them ourselves. :P But yeah, look at it this way - you have one good ship for playing wiht, adn one for modifying - or at worst, turning into wreckage pieces!

FFGs customer service is excellent. When my mates dog wrecked a load of my ships they were kind enough to replace all but the tantive.

Most toy and game companies tend to be pretty good. When i was a kid i lost the sword off the weapons rack of my new castle grayskull, i wrote to matell or whoever and they sent me a whole new weapons rack with weapons.

Likewise when i was a bit older i wrote to Coleco after losing a 'starcom' visor for a figure, i asked for a new visor and they sent me a whole new figure and a loads of 'missions' and adventures to do. That was really good of them, at the time i remember being annoyed because it sort of still meant i had one man with no visor as i didnt want to throw the old one away.

I managed customer services for GW briefly, i'd always go out of my way for people. Once someone wanted the rules to a game they bought at a second hand sale, we hadnt sold it for over a decade but i went to the archive, found an old copy and photocopied the rules and posted them to them.

Results!

KTreu42 was kind enough to send me the obviously broken die and I fired it up in the Dice Roller 3000 and ran it for a couple of days. 15,000 rolls later, this is what I got:

Observed / Expected / Difference
-----------------------
Evade : 5556 / 5553 / 0.05%
Focus : 3715 / 3702 / 0.34%
Blank : 5538 / 5553 / -0.28%
Total: 14809
P value: 0.957 - fair

I actually split this into 3 5kish sessions. The p-values were .377 .916 and .31 respectively. That value is roughly the chance the variance happened by shear chance.

So what does this mean? It means even with a giant defect, the die will roll pretty darn fair..... in a dice tower at least. What it doesn't say is whether or not the rolling method (mostly on a table) has any impact.

Nice! I had a feeling it would be fair in the end, but I'm glad we tested it. Now I can prove to anyone who asks that it's fair by referencing this thread :P
