SLAM Maneuver and Stress Question

By Wretch, in X-Wing Rules Questions

There have been a couple of questions about SLAM and dropping bombs that have made me think a bit about the SLAM action.

My question is if you use SLAM to do a green maneuver do you shed stress? Also if you use SLAM for a red maneuver do you get stress?

I don't think so because, check for stress and clean up happens before actions. Am I missing something?

... choose and execute a maneuver on the ship's dial.

You choose a maneuver. You do not set the dial to that maneuver.

After that you execute the maneuver. That refers to step 3 execute maneuver of the activation phase. That's what you do. Step 3. Nothing else. You do not resolve any of the other five steps. There is no check pilot stress step. Therefore the maneuver neither gains nor removes a stress token. Just like daredevil.

Of course you cannot resolve step 3 without resolving step 2 (place maneuver template) and a part of step 5 (remove maneuver template) as well. But no, you are not allowed to do so. RAW you pick up the ship and place it at the other end of the non-existing maneuver template.

SLAM is an action, so you cannot SLAM if you are stressed.

SLAM is an action, so you cannot SLAM if you are stressed.

Good point however the question regarding taking on stress from a red maneuver still holds.

When you perform a SLAM action, the color of the maneuver isn't relevant.

If it is a green maneuver, it doesn't remove a stress.

If it is a red maneuver, it doesn't give a stress.

The only restriction is that you cannot use SLAM to perform a red maneuver if you're stressed.

All of these distinctions are pointless, since you cannot perform actions while stressed.

Therefore, hypothetically, even if a SLAM maneuver did give/clear stress:

  • there is never a stress for the green maneuver to remove
  • there is never a stress to prevent you from SLAMing a red maneuver

So, until with get to perform SLAM actions with Tycho, just ignore the color of the maneuver when SLAMing!

I would say no, because you've already passed the Check Pilot Stress step to be able to perform the SLAM.

One question I have is whether or not you will be able to deploy a bomb in the middle of a SLAM action.

The FFG article says "the ship comes with the new SLAM action, which allows it to race across the battlefield and deploy its bombs at an unprecedented speed."

However - bombs are dropped when you reveal your maneuver dial and you can only drop one per turn.

So unless the rules are tweaked a bit, it sounds like bomb dropping doesn't change much - you can just get further away.

It would be neat if you could drop a bomb on your first maneuver and then another prior to executing the SLAM. In the right situation, you could damage more ships.

Neat? Yes.

Violate a second rule? Yes. (You can only drop 1 Bomb/Round).
